I might not be a Paleontologist (by now), but I do spend a lot of time researching about these animals and as rediciolous as it might sound, I can not find any flaws with it, so I would recommand to donate it to the natural history museum aswell. This model really looks like a living animal, so great job on that, as I don't get the opportunity to say that very often!

I'd imagine to look a Velociraptor pretty much like that. Nothing wrong with JP movie monsters for entertainment, but I equally enjoy attempts at scientifically acurate reconstructions and this one looks very convincing! Should be in a museum, because they sometimes have horrific Velociraptor sculptures
@silvertheelf
@silvertheelf 4 года назад
But Jurassic Park is scientifically accurate for one reason... *GENETIC MODIFICATION* ...yep... Dr.Wu changed the dinosaurs so much they didn’t even resemble much their original design, also the velociraptors were velociraptor entropis (shown by the deinonychus skull design), not velociraptor mongoliensis
@coltrider666
@coltrider666 4 года назад
@@silvertheelf The Velociraptor in JP was originally based on Deinonychus antirrhopus, which in one paper that Chrichton worked with was named Velociraptor antirrhopus, because of some simililarites both species had. The name was later abendoned, but Chrichton kept it for the novel, because "Raptor" just sounded better. The modifications of Wu give an inuniverse explanation for the look of the dinosaurs and that's all fine, but calling the genetics of the JP franchise scientifically acurate would be the same as calling the events of Lord of the Rings a historical correct representation of the middle ages. It's both fantasy, but that does'nt make them less enjoyable. Poeple should just stop thinking JP has real dinosaurs, because some get so attached to them, they reject the work of real scientists because real dinosaurs don't resemble their childhood "hero" lizards
@silvertheelf
@silvertheelf 4 года назад
Raptor dose sound better, that is true. But deinonychus sounds just as cool when you know it’s names meaning, something like terrifying claw.
@coltrider666
@coltrider666 4 года назад
@@silvertheelf I think for the movie it was definitely the right choice and JP raptors are some of my favorite movie "monsters" and scared the sht out of me as kid! Still wonder what a real raptor that size, like a Utahraptor, would have looked like. Maybe we'll see a big, scary feathered raptor in a jurassic movie, they could easily explain that with some advanced DNA cloning process technobabble
@kathyl9222
@kathyl9222 4 года назад
Even as a deinonychus it’s still inaccurate, but it was considered accurate at the time JP was made.

The way you restored that Velociraptor skull did remind me of forensic scientists bring skulls of long-dead people back to life by adding layer upon layer of modeling clay as if it was real tissue that covered the living face.

@jaredmc7982

I think it would have been easier to lay the feathers starting from the bottom of the neck and working your way up to the face. I did something similar with a life-sized Citipati model I made for an Egg museum some years ago. And that too was a learning experience for me in finding out what worked, what could have been better, and techniques I'll probably not do on future projects.

@mistingwolf
@mistingwolf 4 года назад
Definitely lovely! However, it kind of hurt a little when you started applying the fur/feathers from the front to back. To get the correct layering, you should have started at the bottom of the neck and worked your way back up toward the face. I think donating it to the NHM would be a wonderful idea, and I'm sure they would be pleased to have it!

2:58 When a scientifically accurate velociraptor sees the featherless velociraptors in Jurassic Park
@mykenziewaugh1078
@mykenziewaugh1078 4 года назад
I see how the fur and feathers were difficult. In high school I made a dragon sculpture and made feathers that went down its back. What really helped me with them is that I did the bottom layers first. I think that could have really helped with this piece. Especially if you let each layer dry before adding the next, allowing movement between the layers (like if the wind blows the feathers and fur move). Its a bit difficult to do, since you are having to remeber the apply the feathers and fur in the direction they grow backwards, but you get used to it after awhile. I really enjoyed watching you sculpt! I wish we could have seem your fur and feather application in full! Its really amazing!

And it would be a tremendous help if you showed a step by step tutorial on the scale detailing process! It's sort of glossed over in the video, not shown closely or very well. And personally the scales give the dinosaur life, And showing that would be super cool. Just a non slow-mo video of how to make the scales for dummies like me who can't sculpt a hotdog. Thank you very much for this wonderful creation!

When applying fur, feathers, or hair to a model, start from the lowest point (the neck) and work your way up like you’re shingling a rooftop. The direction in which you lay the hair on your model can help add to the realism. So the fur on the cheeks may swoop to the sides, whereas the fur towards the neck may point straight down. I’m not an expert in dinosaurs, nor am I an expert in model making, just some pointers I’ve learned from special effects artists and my own experiments. I love watching things like this and I’d love to see an update if that’s something you’re looking to do!
