Marty Palmiere, Scott Johnson, and Lonnie Cook lived through the worst day in Battleship IOWA's history: April 19, 1989. They've lived with the memories ever since.
While Marty and Scott have returned to their ship numerous times, 2023 was Lonnie's first trip back since he left in late 1989.
After the ceremony on the 19th, they kindly sat down to chat about memories - both the tough ones and some fun ones that demonstrate what life was like aboard the ship during her Cold War commissioning.
Marty, Scott, and Lonnie - can't thank you enough for your willingness to share and your candor. Privilege and a pleasure to have you on the podcast. Let's do it again some time!

Great to see Iowa sailors recalling their time and experiences on board. All of these crew members deserve a well done and thank you from a grateful nation for their service. My Dad served in the Navy in W.W. # 2 in the Pacific Theater on the Destroyer U.S.S. Boyd DD - 544 amongst other ships.

I t was Great to see Marty Palmiere and Scott Johnson after 35 years. I was in R Division and I knew him back then, also I was the On-Scene Leader on the Crash & Salvage Crew for the Flight Deck so I remember Scott Johnson in the Hot Suit.

Thank you all for keeping life in the ol girl. I served in B division from 86-88. April 19th, 1989, I left IOWA a year before that tragic day. When I learned about it, the shock and sadness was very visceral even 500 miles away. ❤ to the 47. As part of B division; what are these “stars at night” you speak of?

True blue haze grey and underway sailors. I was an airdale in the navy during the Vietnam war made two Westpac cruses one on the USS ENTERPRIZE CV65 and one on the USS RANGER CVA 61. I can relate to their pride in being USS IOWA sailors but most respect for them being Battleship sailors. Not a lot of people can have that Honor. Thanks, shipmates, for sharing your experience's.
