What's it like to go aboard a ship that's been closed up for nearly thirty years and help bring it back to life? Bob Lemmond and Marty Palmiere know.
They spent years preparing USS IOWA to rejoin the US Navy's active roster in the early 1980s, and along with Scott Williamson, were there when then-Vice President George HW Bush recommissioned her.
Prepare for some colorful characters telling some completely cool stories - including some unique perspectives of the shakedown cruise - in this week's episode of Scuttlebutt!

My husband and I are proud plank owners. Our piece was removed and replaced during the 1980's refurbishment. He got it from the dock side table set up by the crew for gifts. It was the only one they had on the table. He asked if it was for sale. They said it was. It became ours right then and there. Still have it. God bless USS IOWA and all who sailed on her!

A “Plank Owner” is a crew-member that was aboard during commissioning or de-commissioning. There are those contributor’s to the Battleship Museum that are also termed Plank Owners due to the financial contribution made that keeps this Historical ship afloat.

I have a few of the teak planks. Pretty cool. Perhaps President Roosevelt stood on those planks.

@@robertstephens6757 We own a plank that has a metal plaque that states plank owner on it. It was a crewman that sold it to my husband right there beside the ship, who told him that he would be a plank owner. He was told that the proceeds went to boost crew moral. It was later signed by Gerald Gneckow former Captain of the USS Iowa who's signature is also on the metal plaque. He was told at the time how we got it. He was pleased that it went to the good of his crew and was happy to autograph it. You can split hairs if you want to. I stand by what he was told by an Iowa crew member at that time. And later by a former Captain. Perhaps we are honorary, but we are plank owners none the less.

We have supported IOWA, IOWA class battleships and several other Battleships by buying teak deck planks from yours and other ships stores. None of these other pieces have a plaque that states Plank Owner, so this one is unique in our collection.
