BE SURE TO USE UHS-II cards and readers. SD card readers are not all the same in transfer speeds. Some are much slower than others and could make the difference between 1-2 minutes and almost an hour! I found micro-SD does not transfer that much faster and USB-C or USB-3 does not transfer faster than old USB in many cases. Here is a quick video on the subject.
Recommended UHS-II card reader JJC UHS-II SD Micro SD Card Reader, 3-in-1 USB 3.1 USB-C Type-C 3.1 Micro USB 2.0 Connection Port, High Transfer Speed up to 312MB/s amzn.to/3uD2tsF

Hey bud. No need to apologize or keep explaining why you do these! Even though you're successful, you still take the time to provide practical suggestions and it's appreciated and makes you relatable. Down to earth,grounded, and real. That's why I trust you over others. Now I'm going to order that ugreen reader as mine only does 24mb/sec!

My wife and I had this discussion (not really an argument but, you know) as I was transferring her pics to the computer. She was blaming the computer but I showed her that my card reader was twice as fast as hers. She's still keeping hers as it's pink.

Markus, your Toshiba Excria is a V90 card which is USH-II. None of the readers you've shown are UHS-II, which is why you're only seeing up to ~90MBps which is UHS-I transfer speed. I'd recommand a decent quliaty USH-II reader such as Satechi which is only $20, and you should be seeing 200-300MBps on your V60/V90 cards.

I use the "Kingston MobileLite Plus USB 3.2 SDHC/SDXC UHS-II Card Reader (MLP)", it's only $10 and reads/writes at whatever the speed of the card. I have 200 and 300mb cards, both of them hit their rated speeds using this reader. Cheers 🍻

Pro-tip. Not all USB ports on your computer are created equal and their (maximum potential) speed can be determined by the color of the plastic insert: Black = USB 2.0 (up to 48MB/S) Blue = USB3 3.0 (up to 500MB/S) Light-blue = USB 3.1 (up to 1GB/S) Red = USB 3.2 (up to 2GB/S) Most modern computers have USB2.0 *and* USB 3.0 ports. If you plug even the fastest card-reader in to a black (USB 2.0) port it will be limited to about 45MB/S so choose your port carefully.

Boy oh boy Mr. Markus did you ever hit the head on the nail with this episode. Besides the reader's , I've found the same symptoms of Ever-Slow-Itis to dwell in the SD-cards also.. It might say it read/writes at (insert speed here), but reality is another thing entirely. And since were talking about speeds.. when you decide to transfer and archive over the footage/shots onto a backup drive, those drives are just erratic in speeds as the Readers that you pointed out. Any way, this is why besides tuning into your informative episodes of tips and information... one needs to do some personal research on their ens. Not all things are created equal.

this issue can be bigger than u think and I m thankful that u brought this up. I found it super painful if resellers send u with your camera or lens purchase cheap SD or card readers which are just useful, if u put them right into the trash can. I'm liking this video a year later because you actually give a visual demonstration using the card reader you purchased. I've noticed something across the board when it comes to both descriptions of card readers on various marketplaces and the people who promote and/or review said products. While this is typically a product where you'd wanna showcase read/write speeds, that doesn't mean anything if you can't reliably insert the SD card into the device. Yes, part of that is common sense determining which way the connectors face, but it goes deeper than that. Most of these readers don't disclose ease of insertion/removal of the cards on their product page or in the review itself. A lot of reader are designed so a good amount of the card is still exposed for "easy" removal, which is a completely different source of grief for me. But readers like this take in the whole micro SD card leaving only that small edge visible. That small edge is what you have to pull it out by. Gently. Why? Because these readers don't have ports with a spring loaded ejection feature. You know, the kind you see on the back of the Nintendo Switch. And the Wii U. And the Wii... Again, I know these readers are mostly cheap, but there's still that expectation that your SD card will survive being inserted, read and/or written to, and removed. And that expectation should persist more than once or twice. Having said that, UGREEN looks to be pretty reliable when it comes to ease of insertion judging from your demonstration. I'll have to check them out later.

I own a couple of Ugreen accesroies and cables. Is a good brand. Anker is great for powerbanks, I also have twho of those. One of my last purchases was a Satechi stand for my iMac. It comes with USB A, C ports, SD and microSd readers and a headphones plugg. I got it because the looks and small footprint. Never thought much about the ports. But, to my surprise, it's really fast!! So fast I even sold my Lexar Professional Workflow. Transfering speed is super important, specially when you shoot events like weddings and come back home with 6 filled cards.

I just connect from camera to computer. I find this faster than removing the card, plugging it in to a reader, transferring, and then putting it back into the camera. Of course, I rarely have more than 10GB to transfer. Nor have I timed it to check the speed of the transfer. It helps that the camera connects via USB C.

Best SD card reader I ever bought is my Delkin DDReader-44 USB 3. I get 260MiB/sec peak from my Transcend 700S V90's. It's also worth noting that what you're copying to will effect the speed, cheaper SSD's will fill their cache quicker, so you'll go from fast to slow in a couple of minutes.

I love the Sandisk readers. Combined with Sandisk extreme cards i get 170MB/s on USB3. But that only works with original cards because it is out of spec. I guess 100MB is the U1 specification. They are also tiny an exist in a regular as well as micro SD size.

USB-C (the connector) is separate from USB 3 (the protocol) and different protocols may be used over different connectors. Any blue USB-A ports/connectors should be "superspeed" USB 3.0. The USB-C connection could be using the slower USB 2.0 protocol.
@SianaGearz

There are several quality grades of USB 2.0 devices, sharing the same HighSpeed signalling modes; cheaper ones top out near 22MB/s and nicer ones top out somewhere near 33MB/s, though up to just north of 40 MB/s is possible, just depending on how much time in each transmission frame they reserve to do other business. I wager a guess, we have 3 USB 2.0 HighSpeed devices in this test, though i'm not sure about one, it could conceivably be a very wonky SuperSpeed device or a very nice HighSpeed device, the white big one on the very right.

You can also make the speed faster by having an SSD hard drive and not the traditional spinning hard drive plus you can install on the back of the computer in one of the video card slots two to four USB 3.1 or USB C input.

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Год назад
Spinning drives can be pretty quick at writing bulk data, as long as they're near exclusively used for this purpose. Several hundred MB/s are not out of the ordinary. The cheapest per unit of capacity SSDs come with extra dense QLC flash, which has very tiered behaviour and can get exceptionally slow. The first several hundred MB to several GB per burst can be written quickly, and then it falls into the lower speed grade of about 80MB/s sustained write speed, and especially if they are DRAMless, they can also become somewhat unresponsive to read requests. When you get nicer drives, they can sustain several hundred MB/s write speed indefinitely and don't have annoying unresponsive behaviours. So beware of lowest end SSDs if you actually need that sort of write performance.

When you distinguished between the two form factors of connectors, what you referred to as "USB 3" was actually USB Type-C. The letter is to do with the form factor: you have the older USB Type-A, which has a larger, rectangular connector, and the more recently introduced USB Type-C, which has the smaller connector, rectangular with rounded corners. The number is generally the determining factor of the speed of data transfer, so typically e.g. USB 3.x will be faster than USB 2.x. When discussing speed of transfer, you need to pay attention to the number part of the description, not just the manufacturer.

@mengshun Год назад
Process of elimination and diagnostics. You have done step 1 with trying multiple cards. Next, try another card reader. If that works, could be a coincidental failure of the card reader or an incompatibility has been introduced (likely the BIOS change). Try the suspect card reader on another laptop or desktop. If it fails, the card reader is the issue. If it works, we're back to the BIOS. There is another possibility: the USB port could be misonfigured or damaged. Try another USB port on the PC with the BIOS change. If it works, you're down to the USB port. If not, then back to the card reader. In short, try different combinations to whittle down the suspects. The most likely culprits in no particular order are: BIOS upgrade, corrupted USB drivers, bad USB port, bad card reader, bad SD cards
