Update: The maximum output power is derived from a database in the unit, which is why we only see a maximum of around 90W on the 5mm tip. Small tips are limited to significantly less power by the station.

The actual Processing of the DDE-1C is in the front display portion of the unit that you did not open up not in the PIC33FJ256. I tore two of them down on a live stream due to the downgraded MCU / Disabled Features Issue. If you still have your DDE-1C Curious to what MCU they were using 2 years ago. For those who use this video as a review to see if you actually want to buy this station, and you're missing the temperature preset buttons, there actually is a way to use 3 preset temperatures. You just have to enable and set it in the menu (menu -> tools -> temp level set -> temp levels). After that you can just use the up and down buttons while the handle is out of the stand to change the temperatures to the preset values. Besides this station with the T210 handle and PA120 tweezers, I use a CLMU-A automatic tip cleaner. The automatic tip cleaner is one of those things you didn't know you needed in life untill you used it.
@panbekon1470

You could also mention, that if in preset mode, only that temperature can be chosen. If your presets are set to 300, 350, 400, you can't set 375 for instance. Even more annoying on 4 tools unit without physical buttons

Hi Steven, nice Video and Interesting Model, was new to me :-) I am using a JBC CD2E020 Max 130W Power, since some years now, I had quite a few others before that, including a Metcal MX-500P-21 and a STSS-PS2V-02 (older Metcals) with many Tips. I use mostly Leaded Solder, but wasn't particular happy needing different Tips for leaded and Unleaded. Further the JBC was giving me a better thermal Performance than the 2 Metcals i had.Cheers, Konstantin

For PACE the cartridge approach had specific design goals as compared to a non-cartridge sleeve and tip approach like their PS-90. In my opinion the ADS200 handpiece is an evolution of the TD-100 IntelliHeat cartridge handpiece. One goal in this evoution I think was to reduce the handpiece self heating with extended operator use. If you look at the PS-90 design as an evolution the heater is a socketed device beyond the end of the handpiece with materials use to minimize heat transfer into the grip, and it works really well. I think the basic promise of a cartridge approach would be to keep heat out of the handpiece by putting the heater out further towards the tip, which would allow a shorter grip to tip distance while still having a cool handpiece. I think the TD-100 runs much hotter than the ADS200 handpiece, although in this evolution there was the move to lead-free soldering requirements with its associated higher temperatures. To me I think a cartridge handpiece basic design advantage is in cooler handpiece extended operation. So it is interesting that JBC would add a foam sleeve. PACE has experience with removable foam type sleeves like on the PS-90 and I think found them lacking with rugged use, like in a electronic production setting. I believe this is why you don't have the foam sleeve on the ADS200 or the TD-100 handpiece. Possibly another reason for the foam sleeve is to address hand fatigue ergonomics. I think foam sleeves just wear out too fast for production work. I actually like a solid handpiece without any foam and if possible a minimul rubber grip much like the older Metcal handpiece, and this approach is used with the ADS200 handpiece in shape and design intent.

Great video. You can see from JBCs own graph that even with a huge tip, only hits about 40% power average (60W) as you said limited by the cartridge. Metcal should be a bit less limited by a smaller tip size IMO.

Thank you for the review. I do not know what to tell. For sure its performance is pretty convincing though it looks like the clone versions can do the same (for the fraction of the price) because the magic is in the tip and it is overshooting. There is no per tip calibration which could be a simple 3 points calibration per tip name in the FW. This feature even a KSGER has for 40€... I have just built a station based on the Ksger hardware which is slightly modified to be able to use a JBC handle and tips and I use a CFW for it. Maybe this is the good setup... This way I have the advantage of the JBC cartridges with the calibration process of the Ksger station.

One potential reason for the depth of the stand is to accommodate the fume extractor that mounts to the stand (to catch fumes from the handle when put back in the stand). It can be seen around 43 seconds into this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--b8sla5zbDE.html

T470 is a monster even metcal can not defeat him. The metcal unit is basic a high power amplifier and the colder the tip is the more is rezoneting and draw more power from the unit. T 470 is a masiv heating element with can put the full 250w power of the station. In your caze the full 150w power . Wath you see for now t 245 is a baby comparing with T470.

Yes I have built a JBC clone station from scratch (documented on eevblogs) and can confirm that the peak power over 100w is only useful for rapid reaching of the set temperature. My controller is capable of putting out about 200w but I intentionally limited it to 150w to reduce tip stress, heating barely slowed down anyway. Power rarely goes above 50w when actually soldering...

Great video as always, but I'm not sure why you feel that higher power delivery capability will shorten the life of the tip. The higher power delivery isn't needed to get up to temperature quickly and should only come into play when the unit is trying to keep the tip at temperature when heating up a large thermal mass. In this case, the extra power delivery will keep the tip temperature more rather than less stable. The tip life will be a strong function of how hot the iron is set to run at, how long it stays at that temperature, how quickly it heats up and cools down, and how clean it is kept, but it's not obvious that any of these are adversely affected by higher power transfer capability. The main problem with the higher power transfer capability is the adverse affect it has on ones wallet, and JBC isn't overly concerned about this...
@sdgelectronics
@sdgelectronics 3 года назад
When you first take the tip out from the stand, the station puts maximum power for that type of cartridge into the heater coil. Some of the other stations are a little more gentle on the heater coil. Outside of that, you're right, it shouldn't present any issues.

I made a station which feeds two irons using cheap Chinese controllers and it is three times smaller than this JBC. And no, I did not use switchmode power supply. I managed to just fit a 240W toroidal transformer. Very happy about the result, barely takes any space on the bench. And the Chinese controllers, surprisingly, work excellent. It's a very nice system, but we replace the tips far too regularly at my workplace and I don't know if this is down to the users or the tips themselves. It'll be interesting to see how the longevity plays out at my work bench, since I've had seriously long life from my Metcal tips.

@@sdgelectronics no rush :) I just noticed becuause I was looking at the jbc website a few days ago and their cleaner caught my eye. But 400+ is very steep for a motor and a brush.

@@philippschilk6077 I know I saw the same one, Metcal also do a similar unit but cheaper. I nearly bought one, but did think it's a lot of money for what it actually is...

@@sdgelectronics I'll look forward to a video on those cleaners and the nitrogen setup if you ever get around to it :) Both are on the list of soldering toys I would love to have a play with but I am not gonna spend that much money on.

Allí claramente se ve que la metcal se llevó a todas por el medio claramente se ve que calentó mucho más y más rápido que las demás, no entiendo.

Would be interested to see how the Thermaltronics 9000s compares to the Metcal 5200 😉
@jaro6985
@jaro6985 3 года назад
TMT-9000S is only 40W output, so same as his MX500 station, better than T12 but likely not enough to beat JBC any more. 5200 is 80W output.
