A really nice comparison video. I've had a stereo pair of the sE4400 mics for 5 years now and I have to say they are really great mics. I use them on everything and they deliver. I'm currently using one on an audio book narration and the sound is very natural. I've been interested in getting another pair and really got excited at these new Mocs because, well, the price, and the fact that I use the cardioid pattern 95% of the time. These new models are just what I'm looking for.

Yeah, sounds like a perfect addition to your current lineup. Thanks for your comment!

I love the quality and price of the SE mics. I have been looking at the 4400 for a while and I will get one soon. I do have the Voodoo 2 ribbon and I love it.

I think you'll love the 4400! I've never tried their ribbon mic. What do you use it for?
@joibjalla

@@MatthewHaines I'm fairly new to all this but I did a lot of research before I bought the Voodoo 2. It has the vintage sound of ribbon mics but the highs are nice too. I've tried it on a guitar amp (distant) and on acoustic guitar. I double tracked my acoustic a few weeks ago just to test the mic, had a capo on the 2nd fret and after I hard panned the tracks left and right it sounded great! Although the capo was on, it sounded warm.

@@joibjalla Sounds interesting! I haven't played around with ribbon mics because they're not really an obvious "content creator" choice (what with the figure-8 polar pattern and delicate sensibilities), but that doesn't stop me from wanting to try one out!

Why type of pop filter are you using with these microphones at the end of the video?
@MatthewHaines
@MatthewHaines 2 месяца назад
Unfortunately the one I used has been discontinued. ☹️ I don’t see a similar replacement. It was a curved piece of metal mesh and foam, and attached to a ring that could be tightened around the mic. I see some curved ones with elastic but they don’t work well. Maybe ask sE what they recommend.

Hi Matthew, I would like to use it for singing and for acoustic guitar. Which one is more smooth (no harsh)? Thank you very much for your work. Roman
@MatthewHaines
@MatthewHaines 4 месяца назад
Hi, Roman. Both mics are very flat and you'd do well with either. I would lean toward the T1 version since you're playing acoustic as well as singing.

T1 seems to be more bright to me than 4100. Didnt expect that i could hear the difference between this two mics. Btw i bought the t1 and now im thinking to switch to 4100, is it worth it?
@MatthewHaines
@MatthewHaines 5 месяцев назад
There's a slight difference in both the low and high end comparing the T1 vs the 4100. I don't think the difference is significant on voice and it wouldn't be worth swapping. If you're recording instruments, then maybe....

Which mic would YOU choose? The question is a bit unfair... it depends on the source. I find the 4400 to be more neutral than the T2, and I suspect the difference between the 4100 and the T1 to be similar. Well, on MY voice I prefer the T2 over the 4400. But I also liked the Titanium sputtered sE Titan and the sE X1-D... I have slight preference of the sE 2200a C or MP and the latest 2200 over the 4400, but the 4400 is better than the sE 2200a. But I'm comparing the FIRST version of the T2 and 4400 here. I listened to a few reviews, and I cannot hear the difference between the first and second versions of those mics, and compared to the cardioid only versions, I can NOT hear any differences to the corresponding multipattern mic in cardioid mode (which I think was the idea by sE) To say the least: sE knows how to make some decent microphones at a reasonable price!
@MatthewHaines
@MatthewHaines Месяц назад
Agreed, sE does a great job! And yes, they went to great lengths to make the T1/4100 sound identical to their multi-pattern cousins. Thanks for your well-considered comment!

Nicko, do you think it would make any sense for me to sell my TLM 103 (don't like the top end of it on my voice) and buy an Se Electronics mic? I am thiking of getting the T2. What do you think? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks! (VO stuff only is what I intend to do).
@NicoDeclerckBelgium
@NicoDeclerckBelgium Месяц назад
@@EnglishEloquenceMoscow It depends... For voice-over my TLM103 is usually not my first pick. I mainly use my TLM102, sE T2 (could have been a T1, but they didn't exist yet) or DCM8. But for your voice, I might choose another. Generally sE microphones sound great and are fantastic build quality. I have more than ten different types and there's only two that don't work for me at all (and they're related). If one microphone doesn't fit you, try another. Can't you try some in a shop or borrow?
@EnglishEloquenceMoscow
@EnglishEloquenceMoscow Месяц назад
@@NicoDeclerckBelgium Surprised to see DCM8 on the list! Yep, TLM102 is fanstasic, I agree. Unfortunately I can't try one in a shop unless I travel abroad which is not happening any time soon. But I do believe I can make a semi-good desicion by asking folks online. I also undersand that a mic is picked for a voice, but it just happens that I like my aston origin/king bee/worker bee a lot more on my voice for some reason than the 103. You think it is worth paying that bit extra for T2/T1 vs 4400/40100? From my understanding you seem to like T2/T1 better. I really apprerciate you taking your time to have this conversation here!
@NicoDeclerckBelgium
@NicoDeclerckBelgium Месяц назад
@@EnglishEloquenceMoscow The DCM8 is my goto broadcast microphone because it is a fantastic dynamic microphone and due to it's very good pop filtering also my (heavy) field podcast recording microphone for untrained speakers. I used to use an sE V7 for that, but some could still make it pop...

What’s the practical difference between transformer/transformerless(2300 vs 4400)? Did you feel the 4400(4100) is any better than the 2300(2200)?
@MatthewHaines
@MatthewHaines 6 месяцев назад
Personally, I don't think a transformer or lack of one is going to be a defining factor. Theoretically you might have harmonic distortion (in a good way) with a transformer, and you might have worse transient response and a warmer sound...but realistically, the capsule design is going to have a far greater effect on your sound. The 4100 is a flatter mic and is a good all-rounder. The 2200 is more tuned for vocals and so has a boost in the extreme highs for airiness. On a practical note, I found the 4100 a little less sensitive to plosives than the 2200. But sound wise... They sound different but both are excellent. I should also point out that the 2200 and 2300 have different capsules, so they might sound different...I've never tried a 2300 so I can't say. Hope that's helpful and not too wishy-washy.

Which mic do you think would be better for narration and character young adult sounding voice work?

They really are so similar that you’d get similar results from either. I think the T1 has a slight edge on voice, but it’s tiny.
