This video is a basic introduction to sea charts. We will go through how to read depths and bridge heights, plot magnetic and true courses from the compass rose using a parallel ruler and how to measure distance in nautical miles. In particular detail is information on converting from magnetic to true and from true to magnetic. This is on of the fundamental skills required for coastal navigation.

Really enjoyed this, brought back memories of my time in the Navy. Albeit we had gyroscopic compasses, so didn't need to worry about the corrections. Really nice presentation!

You did this before I subbed, maybe three years ago. I loved this. When you get going with Renko and wrecking, salvaging or whatever, it would be great to mix the action with the 'knowledge'. Explain where you are headed, what the risks or look outs are and how to get there. Great stuff Stu. You have got me into the market looking for a boat. I am doing my research now and putting a pension payout in January to a coastal cruiser we can stay aboard. We plan crusing around the UK, inland too, and across the English channel. This is our covid plan for retirement. Thanks mate.

Watched I think most of your channel. You make what I thought an intimidating subject really easy to understand. You are so knowledgeable not only with motors and electrical, but on every subject. I am sure that if you were aschool teacher that you would be that laid back teacher everyone loves. I learn things very much like you, name and association. Love the True Virgins Make Dull Companions 😂😂😂

I'd love to see more like this-you know, when your not working on Renko, fixing someone else's boat, diving for anchors or all the other stuff you stay busy with!

Great video. I am about to take my Coxswain exam after sitting my course way back in Feb so I am here as a memory jogger and it is a good way to get back into it. On the course they told us the CADET method for Adding East ie when transferring Compass bearings to True you would AD East ie C.AD.E.T I find this easier to remember than East is least West is best. I also just saw another video using the True (True)Virgins (Variation) Make (Magnetic) Dull (Deviation) Company (Compass) add Whisky (West) subtract Ethics (East). I thought that was pretty good too.

@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 лет назад
+TheDanielSnipz My boat isn't too exciting, it's the runabout you see in the changing a steering wheel and painting the outboard cowling videos. I do like the idea of a video showing some of the local boats on the river and asking the owners what they like about them. Might give people ideas about what type of boat they would like to buy and how they can set them up.

Thank you sir for all of your videos. By watching and learning i have been able to repair or replace my power trim /tilt, figure out how to test for a leaking prop seal ( and yes i had a leak !) . You have done a great job and thank you. . Just wondering, ever do any fishing down there?. I live in New Jersey, USA. Ever think of doing a fishing video? Doug.
@DangarMarine

Hi Doug, glad the videos helped you. Those oil seal leaks are pretty common so glad you caught it in time. Plenty of people fish here on the river but I haven't fished for about ten years. Maybe a video with one of the local experts is in order!

ok, You said East is least, however in your first two bearings, you added your variation which confused me, and in your last bearing you subtracted it! which makes sense if east is least. so which is it?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 лет назад
I would have to watch again to see the exact situation, but the saying is, "when the error is east the compass reads lead" which means if you are going from a compass bearing to a true bearing, you add the error (so the compass is the least) and if you are going from the a true to a compass bearing then you subtract the error. Maybe this was the situation?
@trevordunlay2249
@trevordunlay2249 7 лет назад
Ok that just confused me more lol
@jonathanwebb9862
@jonathanwebb9862 6 лет назад
This works for me - I learnt it in Cadets: Grid to Mag - Add, Mag to Grid - get rid. So add your variation onto your Grid/chart reading and subtract it to convert a compass/mag bearing. Maybe the other way round in the Southern hemisphere?
