Royal Navy aircraft carriers contributed to the UN forces fighting in the Korean War. Their main aircraft was Sea Fury, an advanced piston engine fighter. By this time, piston engine airplanes were relegated mostly to ground attack role and they still performed it well. In the summer of 1952, communist jets began to appear frequently south of Pyongyang and several encounters with Royal Navy aircraft took place. On 9 August, four Sea Furies from HMS Ocean were bounced by eight MiG-15s. British pilots managed to fight back and the MiG pilots eventually retreated with tails between their legs but the official version of this famous combat which was known for decades might in fact be wrong.
