Amelia Zanes I used epoxy on my cottage window piece and almost every has had to be redone using epoxy. Very disappointing. The glue dries out over time and the piece falls off. None of the pieces redone with silicone have fallen off. Hope your project works well. I’d love to see what you do

Hi, I have JUST started into this... I NEVER knew that sea glass was just broken bottles and other glass items that have been in the sea .. that the shapes, the smoothness comes from years of being rolled about in the water and the sand.. I felt soo dumb when I found out what it was exactly... all of that being said... Do you just walk the beach and look for it? I do not live far from Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra. So I was wondering where ppl get it from. Like looking for sharks' teeth? You just look and hope you find it?

@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 6 лет назад
Hi Robert. So glad the video was helpful. I find the silicone will set in a few hours but the longer you leave it the more set it becomes. I only use as much as I need to hold each piece and the more you use the longer it takes to dry. On some larger pieces it can take 3-5 days to dry clear and it will continue to set harder the longer you leave it. Have fun. Jackie

My experience with glue is that it dries out over time as I hang my mosaics in Windows and they are exposed to light and heat. It’s so disappointing when the pieces fall off. This doesn’t happen with silicone.

Glass tiles would be beautiful on glass. I can’t comment on the use of grout on glass. I’ve never tried it. I’d recommend against elmers glue or any glue product. @lindasimula1689
@lindasimula1689 5 лет назад
I will add to the flow of comments, your work is beautiful and this instruction video is well presented and knowledgeable. Thank you! I have not worked with sea glass and now have an interest in doing so. I have also been trying to figure out a way to put 1" clear glass tiles in a window in a jacuzzi area. I wonder if the silicone could be used in this way and type of space. Do you have thoughts about this application? Or, I may turn to sea glass and still question if silicone is a stable choice for a jacuzzi area. Thank you so much for any information you might provide, Jackie!
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 лет назад
Silicone is a great choice for a jacuzzi area. It's meant for bath and kitchen use so it holds up good in moisture. I do complete my mosaics on a table so the pieces don't slip out of place before setting. I don't hang the mosaic until the pieces have set. SO you may have some difficulties if you try to attach the pieces in a window standing up. Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the great info. Do you think that one of these windows would work for an outdoor shower Enclosure that I am building? Would you glue the sea glass on and then put a layer of UV epoxy over it?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 3 года назад
I love this idea. Keep in mind that you can still see through it, so privacy may be an issue. In my climate, the conditions are harsh so I've never tried leaving a piece outside full time, so I can't comment on how it would hold out. I've not used UV epoxy over a piece, as I prefer not to cover the sea glass with any product - it takes away the frostiness. I have tried epoxy for gluing the sea glass on and it does dry out and the pieces fall off over time. Good luck

good info! beautiful piece. I wonder if you simply go to a thrift store and buy and old cheap glass framed picture for you frame and glass.

All my frames are recycled. Either my own or ones that have been given to me. I have found some vintage windows at yard sales or antique stores. Thrift stores may be another source. Thanks for that idea.

If you need old windows, ask your local contractors/handymen. They throw them out when they replace with new. And often have to pay a fee to dispose of them, so they should be giving them to you for free. Just understand that some older windows probably have lead paint on the frames and work accordingly if you'd planned on sanding and repainting.

Yes about the lead paint. I talk about that in my book which covers start to finish process I use for my art. I have a few contractors/ handymen on the case. It’s a great source for old windows.

No I don't. I like to use it just as it was found. It's part of the attraction of the finished pieces for me knowing that each piece of sea glass was created like that in nature.

Thank you so much for your video. I am about to mosaic 2 long windows which will be installed in my new studio and am very worried about what glue to use on my transparent stained glass pieces. I was thinking of epoxy and had purchased one of the products you showed, then saw on line that it shouldn’t be used on vertical pieces. Yet you’ve been doing it on windows. Help. 😋. Thank you!
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 2 года назад
It will hold fine once it sets but you have to have the piece laying down to apply it. If you attach your mosaic and leave for a few days before you hang your windows it will hold.

The silicone works great on canvas. I’ve only done a few sea glass embellishments and not full mosaics as I prefer the look of sea glass on glass - for some reason it shines better.

Hi Jackie, beautiful work. I have heard that you should pour a clear epoxy or resin over the pane after the entire design is glued down. What do you recommend? Also, if the design is not so full or the pane is not completely covered in sea glass, gem stone, or colored broken glass pieces, what fills it in with a crackled/iced/slightly frosted look. Debbie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 лет назад
Thanks Debbie, I don’t pour anything over the seaglass. Once it’s glued on it’s done for me. To cover it would take away the frosted sea glass look. Some people do cover theirs but I can’t comment on what they use. It’s a personal preference.

Hi Jackie, I recently saw a piece in Etsy where the tiny pieces of seaglass were in a very shallow tray. The piece was covered with some sort of glue, so that it looked wet, as if it was under water. I too don't like the 2-tube glue. Do you think that the mono-Ultra would be useful for my project? Thanks, Pam
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 4 года назад
I think they likely used resin. This is very popular with sea glass but not my favorite. As long as the product you’re using dries clear it should work well.

Hi Jackie, I hope you dont mind me asking you here. My daughter and I have been wanting to make a mosaic like yours on glass, but I cannot work out which glue/sealant/caulk to use. We are based in the UK, and I cannot get hold of the product that you use. I wonder if you could tell me, is the product you use just a silicone sealant, or a caulk/adhesive? Thank you so much for your help in advance! Tim
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 3 года назад
Yes you can! I've had the best luck with caulk adhesive. I find sealant much messier to work with although it will still work. Just be sure to purchase one that says "clear" or "dries clear" on it. I prefer ones that go on white and then dry clear. But they all work. I also go for ones that don't have odor.

Any idea on what to use when gluing seaglass to a barn board where it doesn’t show through? I used E6000 but didn’t cover the whole underside and maybe I should have lol
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 3 года назад
I would use the clear silicone - it works great on driftwood. E6000 may eventually dry up and fall off.
@christinemaleport1422
@christinemaleport1422 Месяц назад
Do you think the silicone would work well if I’m gluing on a vertical window? Im thinking I’ll want the E6000 for a faster dry, but I’d prefer the lesser odor too. I’m gluing larger pieces too. Flat stones that have translucent effects.
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie Месяц назад
It will work but you have to tape the pieces on until they set or they will slip. You can insert little tile separators and then remove them later. Start from the bottom and work your way up leaving a few days between each layer. It works better if you can lay your window flat to set. Warning about E6000. It does yellow and dry out and fall off over time. OK for a project you don’t want to last for a long time. But with silicone it will hold for years. And it won’t yellow and fall off. Good luck.

Can you recommend the best way to cut sea glass into shapes that you need?
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie
@SeaGlassArtbyJackie 5 лет назад
Hi Kodi. I don’t cut the glass. I use it as it is found. No two pieces are the same. Also cutting it would expose edges that are no longer frosted and I love the frosted look of natural sea glass. Good luck.

@@SeaGlassArtbyJackie it holds . I wouldn't say it's odourless because you can't put reptiles for example into the enclosure untill it cures
