Video from our week long kayak trip in beautiful Åland archipelago at the end of August, 2015.
The whole week was quite windy (7-13 m/s most of the week) except for the first evening we kayaked and enjoyed a wonderful sunset.
Click here 14:50 to see some maps (at the very end of the video) that show where we kayaked. The same map is shown at multiple zoom levels to give you an idea of where it all took place. You might like to pause when when you see the most detailed map with day markings while reading about the route below.
Our plan was to start from the south east tip of Lemland, Åland and go more or east as far as Kökar archipelago and then turn back and return on a slightly more northernly route. This would take us through several outer archipelago areas and we were hoping for good surf conditions.
But the wind was working against us. Almost the whole trip we had headwinds slowing our progress. The only day with a tailwind created large waves that collided with old waves from another direction making the sea very caotic and surfing practically impossible. These conditions slowed us down to the degree that we, in the middle of crossing Kökarsfjärden on day 4, gave up on going all the way to Kökar. Instead we turned north and later that day turned west and started our return trip to Lemland.
All in all it was a great kayak trip and editing this film made me long for summer and more sea kayaking!
