Sea Levels Are Rising In Miami, Turning Little Haiti Into Hot Property | AJ+

While the city’s famous beaches will eventually be submerged by rising sea levels, Little Haiti sits on a ridge far above these properties. Its location has made it a hot spot for development, and Haitians say they are being forced out.

I am a first generation American from Little Haiti. My mom has a salon on 59th that I grew up in my entire life. I’m in college now and every time I come back I see something new. First it’s the city bikes, then the new fitness studios, and rooftops bars. I feel like a tourist and it’s not the same little Haiti I know. How I grew up, there were tons of family owned businesses (dry cleaners, laundry, etc) and now they’re slowly declining. My old church, La Foi Apostolic, was bought out and forced to move a few years ago. As a first hand native, all of this sickens me.

I think it's rather dangerous to focus on the beauty of art, or to put it precisely, the utility in output of a community to be consumed by those not in it as a measure for the community's right to exist. Little Haiti should not have to sing or dance to illustrate a value in order to continue. That's not what measures the worth of people, or their connections. This is what capitalism's framing of life as a profit motive does to our thinking.

Never have truer words been spoken! I don’t get it, my grandparents came from the Dominican Republic and moved to New York in a building that was mostly people from the Dominican Republic. They were renting an apartment, when the building went up for sale the tenants collectively purchased the building and set up an HOA, they all OWN their apartments now and pay a few bucks a month collectively to maintain the building. I hear the whining all the time from San Francisco people “Ive been living in this rental for 50 year and they want to raise my rent from $3500/Month to $4200/Month its outrageous!” I’m thinking, jeez my house payment is $1000/month... and it’s my house with a fixed rate mortgage... nobody is going to raise the rent on me. I think the greatest hedge against gentrification in the long run if possible is ownership. Whether or not they build these apartments the gentrification will continue so while it is not a full on solution to the problem it's better than nothing because the majority of these homes are going to get replaced so either they have nowhere to go in the area or they can live in this affordable housing. The term is a little misleading because it's not going to be affordable to every single person but it's still cheaper than any apartments you will find on the regular market (with very few exceptions)

I used to live in lil Haiti. That magic city development is abandoned now it’s just empty. Plus that area is nothing but high violence crime and drug dealing. Trust me ALOT of murders

Predominantly-white millennials have gentrified much of downtown and inner-cities, driving up living costs for predominantly black locals who are then forced to move to more affordable suburbs. The resulting demographic shift has led to tensions between black and white neighbors.

I'm born and raised in miami. I can tell you it's not the rising waters.. it's the rising population that is buying out more Nd more affordable areas to turn in to luxury apartments. The places on the coastal lines are just fine. Prices arent dropping. At 3mm rise a year, there is alot of time...

Nah, we're stronger than the Indians...and sadly, we were the only strong race to handle American slavery. We ain't never gonna be exiled. They tried crack, HIV, prison, sickle cell...to no avail. And every 5 seconds a white woman gives birth to black man's child.

So they're only going to allow people of Haitian descent to live in that affordable housing apartment mentioned near the end of the video? That is also a form of discrimination in itself, especially if you're low income and not Haitian.

This is the once in a lifetime opportunity all the founding families of Little Haiti have to get out of poverty, get advisors & sell their properties at abnormal rates & move their culture to a different area where they can re-establish themselves with much, much better quality of life, education for their children, health care & more! Do not paint this as a tragedy. The reality is the man who received all those letters is the smartest of us all, “they pay small money & make big money”... once they pay him big money to make big money he’ll smile his way to his new home!

Developers better provide Long Term Good Paying Jobs and Benefits for the Locals. Also, include Haitian Small Shops into their Retail Spaces so the owners can continue with their business and gain new clientele as well. Lastly, Developers should contribute to More Affordable Housing Complexes for the Locals. Much Blessings to All Involved and Effected by Change.

The people here should talk to each other, find out how much their land is currently worth, go to the banks together as a group and say they want to sell at double the going rate. My guess, this climate gentrification will result in a whole lot of new multimillionaires walking out of the bank. Meantime, Miami looks destined to be the first city to go underwater, our own New Atlantis. - www.miaminewtimes.com/news/dutch-sea-level-rise-expert-miami-will-be-the-new-atlantis-a-city-in-the-sea-7628340

Gentrification, new word made up for this project. These big bankers do this type of stuff all over the world, force the sheeple to low level areas where just a few know how to swim then flood the area. So, Just get ready to move sheeple because you will see fake laws changing daily in the bankers favor until they get what they want from you. Their sales pitch is always the same, better housing for the sheeple which always turn out to be the projects, more job opportunities which always turns out too, hiring sheeple from other states because the contractors are cheaper, and the sheeple that lives in the area will still be out of work they won't be qualified or lacking in the skills they need when the project takes off. Then after the project is finished it won't be easy for the so called poor sheeple to move back in that area to live and thrive because the price will be double to pay, the idea is to get you out and keep you out of that area.

Sell now. Greenland will melt, that’s 18 ft sea level rise. The Thiel Glacier adds +10ft. The entire state will be underwater, so buyers are fools. If you cash out, help your kids move someplace safe. (We love Haitian people here in Washington)
