The Sea of Cortez Black Demon is a legendary shark that has filled the local fishermen with fear for years. The question is if it is a megalodon or just a comoon docile sea creature?
Something you have to consider is that the a lot of the reports of the Cortez Black Demon come from commercial fisherman, who can easily identify the known species of sharks in the area. If they take it seriously, then there's definitely something more than mistaken identity there. Basking and Whale sharks ease along in a slow relaxed fashion due to the fact they don't have to chase their meals. Very easily identifiable even from a distance.
Kurt Dahlheimer I'm terrified of the ocean, and dark water. I was raised in Florida and use to swim not 15 feet away from 12 foot long hammerheads. I keep my ass out of there now lol
I just gotta say, you the real MVP for that warning in the beginning. Nobody understands the struggle of wanting to learn about sharks, but having an irrational fear of them. 😂😂😂
Thank you! I tried to watch the Cave Diver trailer one night and couldn't even get close to finishing it. I completely understand how the fear can get to someone. Some of the video clips I used as well would be terrifying.
I do...I understand it well haha. I love sharks...have since I was a child. And can tolerate most of them...but certain pics of white sharks just FREAK me out. They're beyond terrifying. Lol but so beautiful.
Ben miller I'm not particularly scared of sharks, but the first time I saw a 10 foot silhouette of what could possibly be a Great White underneath a not-so-large boat I happened to be riding.....I was shocked silent. The thing was at least bigger than a full sized couch about 20-30ft underneath the boat. It was in South East Asia facing the open pacific. I remember just seconds before I saw it, a bunch of fish was jumping from the water. I thought it was just because of the boat until I saw the shadow underneath.
@@1jazzyphae oh it's real. It's very common in the Pacific. Every time you see a bunch of fish on a feedinh frenzy and jumping out the water, know there is something down there making them jump
Ben miller oh trust me I know the fear, lol I've never been in any ocean and never will, but I love too watch videos of the things that are down there!
Just wondering when "fuck" became part of the everyday English language...............15-20 years ago only trashy , low life types talked that way. I guess it's just another product of the govt's dumbing down agenda in the schools and a strong sign of a dying nation.
Reese Daniel no its just good to say fuck a lot. nothing to do with school system and / or the way we were raised just fuck is a good word. get a grip and try it some time
I honestly think some people like to pick apart things and have fun leaving pointless comments on topics they never had an interest in to begin with. I appreciate your comment and I don't sweat the people who hate my stuff.
Ben miller great video, but can I make one suggestion? It was a little hard to hear you properly, so maybe get a little closer to the mic? Other than that it was an awesome video, keep it up!!
Can't even imagine how the world would change if we finally found live monsters like megaladon. Would it be positive change or negative is the interesting thing.
Very good video, as always. Concerning the Sea of Cortez as a site for large predators, I seem to recall that there were reports of a giant squid being discovered there are well as large aggressive Humbolt squids attacking small vessels. If those things are true, it would be easy to believe it being the lair of an over sized shark or sharks as well.
at the 2:06 mark, the pic shows the great white with a 20 foot max length. I'm not sold that is their limit. i wouldn't bet against them being capable of hitting 25ft.
General Zod There's a story about a GW that used to hunt down near South Africa. It was nicknamed The Submarine, and it allegedly measured 28 feet in length.
Agreed... but many describe the whole creature is being black. Some say it is a giant great white with a rare color pigment or it's an orca. I have seen images of a great whites eye close up and it is fascinating.
@@annabelleannbocock5442 if were going by his story the shark was eating groups of seals which great whites would not do or be able to do unless it's at least 30+ feet and super hungry
@Nachos Ah, so you're saying that he should correct it to "You are pussy bitch"? I think it'd make more sense if it was your. Also, if you want to use so much grammar. Maybe use actual words instead of acronyms.
Considering the lack of actual solid evidence besides a potentially misdated tooth, I wouldn't hold on too tight to something like this. It may not be impossible, but if a creature with such age was to exist now and as you theorized, stayed at the bottom level of the sea, I'm pretty sure the surplus of prey would persuade it to do anything but rise to the surface. Being large would probably result in them being much more careful with the use of their energy, so I would assume they'd be extremely slow in such a modern and new ecosystem.
during the extinction a bunch of these giant creatures probably swam deep down where they were able to survive. the chances of some of the creatus still being alive are are in the middle.
That is what a lot of people think happened to the megalodon. As I stated in the video it is odd how the deeper you go in the ocean the bigger the animals get. I won't go near the ocean but that is me ha ha.
Ben miller that’s only true for smaller animals, most of which are still quiet small. Also given how it’s hunting technique was probably like great whites, then it would have very hard time hunting the fast and agile giant squids and given how few and far between they are, then they would starve to death down there.
I would have to give you props on this video. Have not seen others of yours. I like how you don't say that it's still alive or try to make some bullshit stories on how one side or the other is wrong or right. Good job
There are very large and vicious squids that eat men and each other in the sea of Cortez, also there is said to be an under ground river that comes out at the very north point of that area that starts in the northern part of the USA. The bottom of this river is full of Gold. LOTs OF IT.
I was a Proffessional Diver ..both Scuba & Hard Hat ..We saw them in both the Sea of Cortez & Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic we called them Great Whites ..this was in the 70s & 80s ..the ones we saw were in the 30 to 40 foot range .. We also found teeth from them that were fresh with soft membrane tissue around them & they were white like fresh shark teeth of today look ..so we figure they were fresh
no I don't comment on these things very often I wanted you to know I found your video most interesting on the sea of Cortez. and I decided to subscribe your Channel thank you so much for and much informative video. can't wait to see your next one
In 2000 while cleaning fish near San Francisquito a shark cruised our 'mothership' of 107'. It was 5' wide and we never saw how long due to its movement, arcing along the surface. 25 or 30' long was an easy estimate.
When the dinosaur extinction happened, it may not have affected the Megaladon, perhaps because they could or can swim to such great depths...interesting video!!
There is a very strong evidence suggesting that Megs are still in our oceans, let's take the frill shark. They where meant to have gone extinct at the same time that the Meg was supposed to have vanished only two years ago one turned up in a Japanese deep sea trawlers nets and a year after that another one was found swimming and very much alive. So perhaps you yourself should do some more research before slagging someone else's information off, there is always a bigger fish or in your case someone with more information.
Well if the Khazars have made a movie about Megaladon sharks then you can pretty much "bank on" the fact they they exist. All of these kinds of movies are what's known as "predictive programming" for the masses. Scare them and make money off of them while secretly gloating about the knowledge that these things are real and not make believe like they are training you to think and knowing that some of you will come face to face with one of these things eventually. The fake jews give us "entertainment" "fairy tales" and "mythology" that is really the TRUTH while they feed as propaganda and nonsense and tell us it's reality.
charizard boss617 I have ever Steve Alten novel. The Meg series being my favorite. yes, I'll be seeing it. Come out summer 2018 and will have Jason Statham playing Jonas Taylor . cant wait
Love the scene @ 0:33 secs' with the opening comment/caption.. "If a stranger came into my house wearing a speedo I would attack him too." A bit of useless information, but a friend of mine who was born being taught how to fish - once told me "when you go into the ocean.. you go straight to the bottom of the food chain, it 's not a choice either." lol
when the tsunami hit in 2011 the plates split and since then many species have been discovered thought to be extinct, I belive that when the plates split it released creatures that were living very deep, megaladon does still exist, there are all sorts of things in our oceans that many wouldn't be able to handle, ive always loved the sea with a passion but I will never go in the ocean again, like many places on this earth, it doesn't belong to us
Good one! I tend towards the 'utterly massive Great White' theory myself. I do like how you present your facts and conjectures; you're very fair. A suggestion for future videos: Deliberate cryptid hoaxes. I don't mean just things like the Piltdown Man (which isn't a cryptid but you know what I mean) or similar; I mean things done both in fun (like the drive to save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus) and for profit (proven sellers of fake yeti hair, etc.) It'd be nice to get a look at the kind of mindset that produces things like the Fiji Mermaid, I think. Thanks!
Thank you so much Ysabet and I am happy to see your comment! I've missed seeing you in my comment section. A while ago I did make a video about hoaxes but I am interested in what you suggested. I did like the tree octopus scam ha ha!
JFC!!! Just looking at the damn pics/illustrations of these thing's are causing my stomach to flip flop!!! I had a major nightmare when I was in my early 20's that I can still remember in full detail! I was sitting in the bed of an average sized pick up truck, when all of a sudden the driver lost control, and we broke through a barrier of a bridge at a high rate of speed. Now you would assume that in that case, I would have been ejected out of the bed of the truck...NO! I was NOT that lucky! Instead the pressure of this truck plummeting deeper and deeper into the depth's, kept me frozen in place when all of a sudden a MASSIVE shark began to follow us down... And as it approached, as I was frozen in sheer terror, unable to breath, I remember the shark gaining on us, and it's mouth was HUGE as it began to get w/in just a few feet from me ready to take a bite when I woke up... The weirdest part of this was that I was watching this unfold right in front of me, and off to the side like a spectator or something. I'm surprised I didn't die of a heart attack, or piss the bed before I woke up! Luckily I never had that dream again, but sadly that was replaced by other nightmares in and out of my life that would make this seem like a walk in the park. Fk that!!!
Omg ! As I was reading this I heard a noise and jumped 😂 I also had deeply disturbing nightmares and try to watch or listen to something calm and happy before sleep
There is a story a Navy spotter tells of when the Gulf War started and they were headed to the area his underling came and told him there's something he should see. Upon entering the crow's nest he said you could see the fin sticking out of the water, coming straight towards the ship, with his naked eye. Upon grabbing his binoculars he states it was out the water I think he said 6ft. He said usually the Marine animals would turn away from the big ships but not this one. His ship was tethered another ship as they were off loading supplies to the other ship and a guy would be in a basket sort of thing going from one ship to the other. He states all who were on deck seen this creature and the guy in the basket started yelling not to move the basket because the creature was coming straight between the two ships. He, along with others, says it was the biggest shark they had ever seen and was not scared of those two big ships. I found it a rather interesting story and has good merit for being true.
i believe that they still exist in 2005 a show called monster quest filmed a a giant squid .in the Mediterranean sharks grow to a phenomenal size . due to oxygen rich environment. and in Hawaii of 02-03 a shark that was said to have been 75ft. was spotted twice that year of 02. 95 percent of ocean is not known and if anyone gave it any thought maybe what we are all looking at is a evolution of Megalodon. the. other species of sharks have been discovered who were thought long exinct but until we take interest in exploring the oceans there will always be speculation but good video and info keep up good work
Sea of Cortez is loaded with squid,a whale favorite.could be a large sharks favorite.maybe its a lone killer whale with minimum white,a big male maybe, who had an injury and could not keep up with a pod.lots of food, minamal exercise(staying in one body of water, not open ocean),could make him grow larger than normal.maybe he had a bad experience with humans, hence the attitude, great video
Quite a good theory. After making this video and giving the topic more thought; I am fairly convinced that what people are seeing is a pod of killer whales.
Soooo, now there's 2 of them?! Cortez Black Demon and Submarine. Why do i still want to be a shark biologist, specializing in great whites and whale sharks? :\
It is just a fancy fish story. When I was a kid back in the 80s, we were reading stories and books of the "Black Demon" was a super huge manta ray. Silly story has evolved to a black shark, lol........
You are correct! It took place in the Sea of Cortez too but all the fishermen feared the "Black Demon" sting ray who was enormously huge for a manta ray and it was black. It killed fishermen by flying up and landing and breaking their boats.
Gavin Kiely It does exist, but it's extinct. Well I guess it's more of a situation where you say it exists even though it's long dead now or it doesn't exist because it is no longer alive currently
6eezb43 Thank you. Yes. There's just no way for it to have made it. I mean c'mon. .. it was no orca. even if it was to supposedly sustain life in the deep it would've needed quickness to survive down there too, but maybe not entirely. As sperm whales aren't all that quick either. perhaps it was able to survive off squid with it's counterpart? 🤔 .. highly unreasonable. cuz squid (even the large ones) don't have near the same amount of meat as whales do. I'm sorry. it's just not the favorable shark in terms of survival. 😐 I rest my case.
I just found your channel and this is the first video I've watched, very interesting and very well done, personally I believe that a Megalodon could very well exist today, the evidence is overwhelming even for a type of dinosaur in the Congo, the natives have picked the picture out of a cartoonish book but did not know the other types of animals that are alive today. Thanks for sharing the video.
I watched Jaws when i was 6 years old, scarred me for life. I'm very facinated by sharks, i just can't look at a picture without feeling a strong sence of absolute horror and panic. So i am very fealous of people who can watch movies and documentarys about them.
As much as I want to believe megaldons still exist, I think it's most likely an over-grown great white. Have you ever seen one in the open ocean while you're in the water? They are huge!!!!
I remember watching a "Monster Quest" episode about this, they determined that what people were seeing and mistaking for a giant black shark was the whale shark.
Years ago i saw a vid of a shark in the sea of cortez near a boat, it was an airplane taking the footage.. but the boat was id-ed as a 25ft boat, the shark was BIGGER by about between 5-10ft. In the air (haha) on what species it was. But something not brought up much is that the Meg would not look like a Great White since it was either in a different family or an "older model". Either or it would have been stockier and more like a battering ram then a sleek fish like the GW from what little we know. And then evolution kicks in, so here is a shark that by convergent evolution (or family tree shared traits) shares many characteristics with a GW and who has competition... killer whales namely. So two options show, change evolutionarily or alter food source, both seems to have been chosen here. The Sea of Cortez Demon is almost always described as "inhaling" or "sucking in" food sources like a catfish (a ship captain from the area described it just like that) does, now that sounds awful good for getting large cephalopods like squid. What ever the SCD is it sounds like it evolved to live deep down, its aggression is due to the same reason GWs attack surfers, mistaken identity as a whale a food source they go for. So what are they doing in a sea with limited space? Well... the Sea of Cortez is likely a nursery and breeding ground for this theoretical massive Squid Hunter Shark, this would also explain the aggression and why its not sighted very often and I'm certain the sightings correspond to certain points of the year, breeding and then when the females return to give birth (however long that takes). Seals and whales are a fattening up and way to get big before moving on to the deep dark abyss.
Look up " submarine the killer shark" you may get the info you seek. Great doco and footage that has changed my view on the issue of a massive shark out there. Enjoyed your vid, thanks.
Lookout if you're out in the Gulf if Mexico if you're afraid of monster sharks!! As I checked Ocearch's website (January 13, 2021), I saw that one of the biggest Great Whites they've attached satellite beacons, just pinged near Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coasts!! She's HUGE!!
Couple of years ago,i was listening to the radio about a shark attack that this young kid was describing. He was swimming, never saw it,it bite down on me and held me in it's mouth. As fast as it hit,it let me go,swam back to shore, got help.needed Stitches in my neck & right ankle. The doctors measure the bite mark,it was 58".
I have been scraped by a small shark on my lower back in Corpus Christi, Tx...when I was a teenager...as an adult I have been struck hard on my lower right calf..a stingray
I too have a healthy fear of sharks... But before I go into the water, dip a finger in, taste it, if it's salty.... Yep.. Sharks... Then again, bull sharks frequent fresh water too... Oh shit... Looks like it's either the bath or the pool for me...
0:34 There are somethings that I expected, when I clicked on this video... This picture, was not one of those things! But it sure as hell, made my day! XD
Its totally possible. Warmth and heat help things grow, thats part of the reason rainforests can thrive and new species are always discovered. Its warmer down on the ocean floor especially by volcanic tubes that let hot gases out. Plus, we dont know hardly anything about the ocean..cool video!
I wouldn't doubt there isn't a megalodon. Just because we haven't seen one doesn't mean it's not out there. There's millions of species still undiscovered and we've only seen 8% of the ocean. Ummm, 8% is not even an F grade, that's like a K grade, not even on the scale at all. I've sailed across the ocean before, it's way way way way way big.
I agree that anything is possible! I recently saw images of what scientists say megalodon may look like now if it went deep in the ocean. They gave it transparent skin and it was the thing of nightmares! I ,personally, could never sail the ocean!
Going with the Coelacanth thing, it lends to the possibility that the Megalodon is potentially still around, but i myself am more intrigued by the idea that theres another species of shark similar it but not the same. That would probably be cooler.
