Sea of Thieves Official Podcast Episode #13: 2023 in Review 

Clearly things didn’t go completely to plan this year but it’s nice to see the team are transparent and listening to the community feedback. :) The sandbox is what draws most of us to Sea of Thieves and I can’t wait to see some fun additions next year!

It's definitely nice to hear that the team wants to be more communicative with the community. Joe's comments at the end genuinely have got me excited about what could be coming that's as big as Safer Seas changing the game.

I appreciate the honesty and transparency of the developers and how they addressed the issues and challenges they faced. Can't wait to see what the future holds for the game!

Wait.. on the Safer Seas bit.. did we mention "There is so many systems to engage with" and then blocked out half of those? And don't get me wrong: I'm all for PvP oriented Content being in High Seas only... Emmissaries, Reapers, Athena's, Hourglass, Skull of Siren Song. Captaincy isn't PvP orientated... there aren't even milestones that are solely PvP-Based in the first place, no "Ships Sunk", Enemy Pirates Killed" nothing

You cant beat the open and honesty of the SoT team - one of the reasons i always come back

Its ironic they are talking about siren skull... well its already dead. every server i play on now i accept the voyage to see the maps and like monday played literally all day... not a single person dug up a single item for it

We need more, we need more to explore and different things to do and I know there is but it needs more engagement

The highlight of SoT 2023 has to be The Legend of Monkey Island Tall Tales. Nothing else comes close in scale.

Safer Seas was clearly my highlight this year, as it made the game a shared expieience with myy friends again, as they got fed up with pvp and griefing, i hope Rare gives us a little bit more freedom in Safer Seas (captaincy , 50% instead of 30% payout, and stuff like ashen tomes etc unlocked because there arme many commendations locked that have nothing to do with pvp) merry Christmas to Rare and all of you guys

Super happy that you guys are focusing on the sandbox! Sea of Thieves remains my favourite AAA online title and Rare continues to show their commitment to all types of players.

I hate to break it to you Rare, but the whole guilds thing is pretty meaningless for people who’ve done a lot, because there’s no point to grind up guilds after you reach level 15 and get the emissary, allowing you to sell to sovereigns without having to lose the other factions for selling. Frankly, I think the adventure world needs to be upgraded in High Seas, with some sort of new trio of sea monsters that aren’t inherently hostile. There’s plenty of concept videos, one of them is about some sort of sea eel thing that I really liked. Obviously it’s not entirely up to us, but I’m just saying what I would want. A new trio of sea monsters: Hydra, Giant Eel, and something decided by Rare or overall community (Monster Vote??). Look to Rain World for some perhaps more advanced AI to give to these creatures that would make them feel less like a tentacle beast, and more like something truly alive. That’s just my dream for the game, but I’m sure there’s at least some people that agree with me.

Love you Rare, well done for weathering a tough year for the game and cant wait to see what 2024 brings.

If Captaincy is such a core feature of the game that is meant to be used by all kinds of players why did you remove it from SS? There is just no reason for this as it has nothing to do with PvP or gold gain.

Why not add something to the open world to bring people together? Maybe a Regatta Race around the Sea of Thieves map that takes you through storms, near krakens, and Megs and lock out cannons if you're opted in

Revamp the emissary system.. come up with totally new emissary quests for reaching grade v. These new emissary quests will be more lucrative/better than a vault, lost shipment, ghost fleet or legend of the veil. But they will have a caveat that the voyage will disappear if the crew lowers their grade v flag or sinks. The emissary system is one of the most used features in the game so a little revamp would go a long way.

We need more good cannons, the only cannons people use are the sailor cannons and its variants. People don't like to use cannons that take up a larger portion of the screen than the defaults do. I really like how you changed the sails so people would start using a larger variety of them and it would great if you could do something similar to the cannons.

at around 39:00 yall bring up more skeleton cosmetics, would this include adding some of the normal cosmetics to be available to the skelly curse? I know coats and shirts would be really difficult because you need to texture the inside of those; however pegs, eyepatches, hats, gloves and boots should be fine right? Maybe not boots because of your skinny little skelly bones. That being said, thanks for everything you guys do, im really excited for this year of sailing. The skull of siren song has been a blast and I have high hopes for what we bring in the future.

What about allowing guilded captain ships to sail in SS but like in addition to letting guild members join your adventure… you can allow guild ships to join…. And you can share your SS server with only guild members/ship

New player here. Put in 70+ hours in the last few weeks and I just got pirate legend. Safer Seas is what got me into this game. The learning curve is so immense my friends and I needed that safe space to feel competent. Personally I'd really like to see the Hunter's call expanded upon. The game has some incredible beasts to hunt. Creating mechanics to lure out certain beasts, and giving out quests like "hunt down a Crested Queen and return it's heart" could be really fun. This would also be an opportunity to improve upon the Cracken if the team went that direction. Overall I think this game is incredible and I can't believe I slept on it for so long. Keep it up team, I love your work ❤

Can I give a good recommendation is that a good way to teach other players how to PVP? Is put on safer seas make ship skeleton hourglass that way you can learn PVP on safer seas and you would have the skeleton ships to drop no loot at all. The only thing it will drop is a storage crate.

Make the existing sea monsters the megalodon and kraken better with new attacks and maybe even new phases and rewards. Add totally new sea monsters and more animal life in general to the game. Expand Hunter’s Call trading company. Add hc emissary flag and quest for reaching grade v. Add hc voyages. Add new fish types. Etc.

Season 11 in January? Mistake or upcoming surprise? Because as of now the S10 is planned until 2024-02-08.

The sandbox need a lot mote attention. Give us keg-launchers, the ability to enhanche food with tempory magical abilities and so on. There's so much you can do for the game instead of all these tales and new modes :)

The respect I have for rare is through the roof I'll freaking love their work. The fact that they create a world Where everything they add is merely a building block towards the future It's just incredible. They keep adding potential to the game. Unfortunately, there are people who keep complaining because all they either care about is pvp And pve It's extremely rare to find Anyone who takes the role playing aspect of The Game into any consideration. Which is their intention like when they added sea forts, A wonderful idea yet all it's ever used for is grabbing treasure and supplies. I never see anyone use it as a base or could be potentially used for hourglass The only reason potential is wasted is because the player base prefers a Call of Duty game rather than role playing. I see the game as the developers intended it action role play and a chance To live the pirate's life

Needed feature: Allow us to tie our ships to the dock! As you would in an actual ship, this would add an aspect of realism and make boarding and unloading a MUCH easier process. Everyone just rams their ships into the dock to expedite things which is hilarious 😂

honestly i think the NDA on insiders is hurting the game. like you have now revealed you will be deleting peoples special voyages come season11...... you didnt say you will also be deleting captaincy voyages so if you stocked up on skull of destiny voyages use them now or those doubloons will goto waste. i fear your addition of anti cheat as it is very server intense and you guys took so long trying to get the 6th ship back into the game and now had to turn it back down to 5 because the servers just cant handle even 5 ships has issues. anti cheat is going to bring us down to struggling to support 4 ships. not that im against anti cheat its obviously needed i just dont know if your game can handle it

En lisant les commentaires, je vois que la plupart des gens n'ont pas compris votre jeu et ne savent pas comment y jouer, ils ont cru que c'était Fortnite ou CoD chez les pirates malheureusement. Ne gagner que des cosmétiques avec l'or est une excellente chose, tout le monde est au même niveau pas de classes, d'xp et de persos hyper forts, seulement de l'adresse et un peu de chance! Les Mers Calmes sont un très bon ajout au jeu, le fait d'avoir enlever quickswapping aussi étant donné que c'était un "exploit" donc de la triche. Et oui, les joueurs qui trichaient avec ça sont très malheureux car ils doivent apprendre à se battre normalement. J'attend avec impatience et une grande curiosité la prochaine année. Et quant aux nouvelles armes on peut espérer voir l'appartion d'un mousquet à baïonette prenant les deux emplacements d'armes: une pour le tir et l'autre pour le corps-à-corps? Sea of Thieves c'est embarquer pour un trésor ou une aventure et au final vivre toutes sortes de choses: rappelez vous que dans ce jeu ce n'est pas la finalité qui compte mais bien ce que vous avez vécu entre votre apparition et votre déconnection.

Honestly the Kraken is fine as a fight, but you lot nerfed it waaaay to hard. The fact that as a solo-sloop I can kill it with 6 cannonball hits (3 each tentacle) is crazy easy. Maybe instead make the tentacle grab do less damage or make it let go of your ship easier? It used to be a massive (and rare) threat but now the Meg is a bigger threat overall.

Excuse me, I just wanted ask cuz I have been hearing that if you completed season 10 plunder pass you would get an irl sea of thieves coin, was that real or not?

I play in the middle of the night for my region. I would rather wait in a queue for a server my region than constantly join servers from other regions that give me 100-200+ ping. There are others playing in my region but we're all spread across other servers. We either need stronger server connections or a way to avoid these servers on the other side of the planet. They make hitreg 1000x worse amongst other issues. At the very least pre-test my connection while searching for a server and don't join me into anything that pings over 80

Despite SoT being in a bad spot content wise, the way they talk about guilds has me optimistic. I was worried SoT was on its last legs with the lack of tangible content over the past 9 months, stats suggesting a dwindling playerbase and the merch shop closing down but they clearly seem to have implemented guilds to be utilised with other gameplay systems in the future. They wouldn't have said that was the plan if SoT is shutting down in the next year or two.

Honestly one of the biggest things I loved this year was the red hit marker for dealing a lethal blow. Small, subtle change but has really had a big impact for me

I don’t think you gave yourselves enough credit with adding Chests of Fortune. Seeing Forts of Fortunes revived with CoFs was a really exciting time in 2023.

Are we sure Seasons is the way to go for the game? Just feels like things get promised, missed and under delievered again and again. I seriously feel like the old way was better... Hunker down. Work on something actually amazing and come out swinging when the time is right. Ppl will come back even if they are on a break. Now it just feels stressed and dead-line heavy. Not ALL GAMES need to be GAAS/BATTLEPASS/SEASONS....

Damn, the new Ubisoft pirate game, skull and bone, it really triggered something in their heads, not only that, i love how much safer seas have changed the game, I see no challenge anymore because the new players see the 30% profit warning and go straight to high seas, its still swabbies.

I wish when they answered questions that they were more difficult questions. Like more controversial questions. Questions that the community at large is affected by or cares about. Like how many people care about hunters call? 5% maximum? Come on rare

Game needs more adventure content. Stop adding stat tracking useless updates. Captaincy and guilds are good but should have been years ago or spaced out. You keep making players redo things and redo things to get rewards. No new content in ages, just stats tracking while you regrind things some people have been maxed in for ages. Obviously easier said than done but also its not.. Why did you spend half the year doing limited adventures? Code something for how long for it to never been in the game? Limited rewards yes, but keep the content??????? why did that extra boss from the sea fort vanish forever?? and the enchantment vessel item? that could be used still? make maybe 3 of the items start some new content event? it seems like content is there its just outdated and never slightly updated for it to be fun game had some of the consistent highest players during the 2020 monthly content updates. and ya thats probably hard to maintain but also its just the new world events/new loot item that unlocks rewards that bring large playerbase back even for weeks at a time which i think the game really needs. not tall tales and not adventures. again guilds and captaincy are good. but NOTHING is new to do.. and people love this game but they will only redo the same things so many times. What was one of the last really good updates? meaning both new and old players will have a good impact. and that was sea forts. honestly, decent rep and good content for noobs, good players use them for supplies. Things like this are good for the game. anyway i think theres solutions to bring more life back to sot that arent just the 'fix hitreg' 'fix cheaters' talking points, even if they are valid. Obviously easier said than done but currently the game needs changes and if you think its fine you are ignorant

WATCH well all wait for season 11 and the only thing they'll change is add a new fishing rod skin. Or oooo maybe you can double bait your hook OMG that's it that's the WHOLE update. I often log in, sail around, dont see anyone and then i log off. On the rare occasion i see another player in high seas, its often newbies who cant talk and barely seem to interact. Events go ignored and despawn on a regular basis - the whole game feels dead.
