Hate of PVE is mostly people not worried about a lack of people they can challenge, but a lack of people they can curb stomp with no effort. It always has been always will be, and anyone saying otherwise is being very very dishonest. Guess what, people don't want to be the punching bag in your power fantasy.

@@TriopsTrilobite At the end of the day that's a nonissue tbh. People will always be in the main high seas mode with the restrictions on the PVE mode that were discussed, and the PVE will be good for newer players, players that have nobody to play the game with regularly if at all (including myself here), and players that would rather not partake in PVP at all. EDIT: You can do a public crew for the second one, but honestly how often are you going to find randoms that you can vibe with long enough to get stuff done, or randoms that want to do the same activity you do?

I would like to point out that there is a certain accessibility aspect to this too. I have a friend who loves the gameplay loop and aesthetic of SoT, but due to a heart condition and an anxiety disorder, any sort of PvP interaction stresses him out enough to risk bursting a blood vessel. After he was diagnosed, we tried to make do with Tall Tales and alliance servers (desperate times call for desperate measures), but we have had to make a lot of compromises and weren't really happy with the state of things. Safe Seas is exactly what my friend needs in order to play SoT without making those compromises. We never cared about gold or commendations or cosmetics or ranks, we just wanted to vibe and experience the games content without looking over our shoulders all the time. Everyone assumes that people will just quit playing the game after reaching level 40 on Safe Seas, but what they don't seem to understand is that different people enjoy this game for different reasons.
@Gideon-STC
@Gideon-STC 11 месяцев назад
I only started playing SoT at the launch of season 7, and had my first sloop in a matter of days, and Pirate Legend about a month or so after. I've had my fair share of good and bad pvp encounters, so I look forward to the idea of being the only player on a server. SoT became a "relaxing" escape to bad days, by just sailing and fishing.....while always looking over my shoulder, and doing my damndest to avoid other players. As stated previously, I am already Pirate Legend so I don't care about proggression. I just want to sail and goof off. Just remember it's a PVE Client Server, not a PVE shared server. The only people there are who you bring with you....and that's it. No other crews...period. Also, Rare made the comment not me, Safer Seas will be a great place for content creators that want to create without the hassle of being interupted. And becuase I feel it needs to be said, yes I will be popping back to the High Seas to play in the events that I can't on the Safer Seas...when the urge hits.

I also think the people saying that SS players will stop playing when they hit cap in everything and not come to HS is ignoring that non-pve/ss players still play the game to this day even with everything maxed out. Or ignoring that people just want to chill and vibe with friends. Another thing I've heard (and was mentioned in the video) is that they will maybe try out HS, get slapped, and leave back to SS or drop the game entirely. But they would've done that anyway, so... where's the problem? SS will give players a chance to invest time in the game outside of pvp and learn the game. They'll get invested in their character and the world and will likely stick around longer than if they jumped into HS and got immediately sunk by a sweaty crew looking to attack anything on sight. Another thing that I don't see many people mentioning is that the reason SS is coming to the game is because of the sweaty PvP, attack on sight mentality that's been cultivated in the game. Fresh players are not likely to stick around if they are constantly harassed and attacked or told to "git gud" or "go play something else if you don't like pvp!". These players then are surprised when people do in fact leave the game to never return. Phuzzy made a video about this and mentioned a few of these points too. But PvEvP games will always slowly dwindle without dedicated PvE(mainly) players. Without them the PvP players will get bored and leave. So it's a balancing act that I don't think a lot of PvP players take into consideration when talking about this stuff. Got to appeal to the wider group of PvE players to keep the game with a healthy amount of players or else you get dead servers because the PvP sweats drove everyone else away.

Pretty much. And, as a guy who has done pvp and enjoyed it a bit, the whole "it'll kill the pvp community" thing is an objectively good thing if said pvp community remains as toxic as it currently is. The ones most vocally against this are the ones constantly hounding players who've beaten them over and over while said players just wanna get sh*t done, and the ones constantly dropping everything to hunt down and kill an obviously new player repeatedly to then stroke themselves over it and claim it means they're good at the game, which is the REAL cause of the long term pvp playerbase of a game being diminished. I can't wait to see how much of the pvp community shows it's true colors. Complaining that they're now unable to win, because the ratio of new to experienced players in pvp mode is more skewed towards the experienced players, exposing them as the types to only sink new players. The harassment outside of simply chasing and sinking players who aren't interested in fighting over and over again, such as toxic messages, was also a long term issue. Oh, I'm sorry mister high and mighty "pvp god", I wanted to help a new player earn some money, didn't realise that sailing away from you somehow made me a "pussy who gets no b*tches". When I was playing, with my f*cking girlfriend. I would have found it funny if it wasn't just pathetic.

My biggest hope for the Safe Seas is pretty much what everyone else wants. Invite your friends to do PvP with them instead. I always found the idea of going against my own crew interesting, especially since we all have designated jobs when it comes to PvP. For example, I’m usually always the Boarder so my friends would expect me to do that, meaning I either need to be more creative with how I board or try out a new role entirely. It not only encourages me to get better at what I’m already good at, but get better at things I’m not. I never leaned too far one side of the PvP or PvE arguments, as I see merits in both. But I will say if you can practice against your friends, not only does it give newer players a chance to practice before trying the real deal but it also lets people like me practice their skills against people who I KNOW are better than me, and know what my capabilities are.

Unrestricted PvP breeds toxicity. New world is a perfect example. In Alpha New World was a fully open world PvP game. From the moment you spawned you could charge at other players and try to kill them. As the Alpha went on they looked at the metrics and were a bit shocked. What they discovered is that players were taking the path of least resistance. The highest concentration of PvP was occurring relatively close to new player spawn. While this wasn't necessarily unexpected the shocking part game when they broke down that data. 98% of the fights were occuring between veteran players and new spawns. Essentially high tiered players were sitting around ganking new spawns all day. Amazon called an audible and moved away from Pure PvP realizing that consequence free most players are assholes. Rare could of fixed or at least mitigated this issue by changing it so you still get partial reputation by digging up the treasures, picking up cargo, or killing ghost pirates bosses. Then upon turn in you get bonus rep and gold. By splitting the reward between completion and turn in players who spent a few hours doing voyages who sink or get senk would lose less and the entire session doesn't sour the user experience. Heck I wouldn't even mind PvP if the server was limited to friends or like minded players. If you could control who you play with RP communities would pop up creating a better experience overall.

Counterpoint: EVE Online. The new player star systems are off-limits but if the newbro takes one step out of those systems, they're fair game. But people are nice to new players. Very often, when a new player is killed, the killer will send them enough money to replace their lost ship and maybe email them with tips on how to avoid dying next time. It's not uncommon for a new player to die to someone and then end up getting recruited by them. As for pvp players killing pve mains, if you pay attention to intel and take the proper precautions, you'll be fine most of the time. Logging in is consent to combat, don't use what you can't afford to lose, your gear is replacable, etc, this mindset keeps you sane in an unrestricted pvp game.

Rare simply found the guts to admit that forcing them together was a mistake and are now giving the game a dividing line (its issues aside) it needed from the start. Toxic players have been pushing new folks away since the beginning too. I can only hope this doesn't get worse.
@pyerack

The toxicity in this game comes from it's core mechanic of "It's more fun to steal other people's work instead" Players can spend hours and hours getting loot only to lose all of that to one mistake or simply not being "gud enuff" at pvp. Yeah of course these two groups are not going to get along. The real solution Rare needed to make was to rework PVP from the ground up. Make it into something a lot less punishing and more forgiving, like for example: Defenders get a bit of extra health for being on their ship. (also won't make cannon balls to the face an insta-kill anymore) Players get a level of reward and reputation for loot found on the spot. (if they lose it later it won't be all for nothing) Better hit-reg. Faster food eating. Make it optional to go to the ferry of the damned or not so as to avoid waiting through a black screen as your hardware reloads the location you were in. Allow for players to choose where to re-spawn on their ship. *Vault away quickscope double gunning.* (if there was going to be a controversial change THIS was the one to die on.) Jump cool-down during combat. And so on. But noooo instead they chose to just put the other half of the players in a separate box because it's easier. I don't have a big problem with Safer Seas other than it's just ignoring the problem that PVP in this game is a clunky mess.

Nahhhh. That’s cap. You have cooked food which gives you overheal etc already. The same tools are available to every crew to use, it’s not anyone else’s fault or responsibility if you chose to not utilise them. Sea of thieves is fair already. Same tools, same health, same weapons, same mechanics. You cannot complain if you get beaten 😂 it’s just down to game awareness, which improves over time, and skill with using the tools in the sandbox again, this all improves over time. To me, this update is for Rare to show to Daddy Xbox that they can improve their player retention. So now new players will sink 40+ hours into safer seas before venturing into high seas where they will encounter the same interactions as they do now. Howeve they now have the ability to go back and hibernate in safer seas. Still proving hours in game for Rares statistics. It only prolongs the inevitable. The best way to close this skill gap was with something like Arena. 5 ship free for all which mimics varying multi ship situations you would find in adventure mode, all while not risking any loot in the process. It’s basically just a training ground to get better as a player. But it’s gone, leaving a void in the skill gap. So players are left with 2 choices, engage and improve or run and stay stagnant in skill.

My crew and I used to play the game religiously every Thursday since the anniversary update. But sometime after the Pirates Life update we stopped playing because it felt as though the sea became increasingly hostile and toxic. We don't mind PvP but as a bunch of players who hop on mainly to relax and goof around it stopped being fun when every session involved combat with every player you see. Gone was the days of exploring an island together, now someone always had to stay back on the boat to keep an eye out. And you'd spend hours completing a tall tail or voyage just to lose it all again, and again, and again. Say what you will about the nature of Sea of Theives shared world, it's a PvP fish eat PvE fish world, and losing over and over just isn't all that fun. It seems to me the developers want to provid people the ability to enjoy their game and to have a "shared" experience with their friends that is fun. The safe seas has me and my crew of 4 excited to come back and try the new content that has released since we left. It gives us the option to decide if we want to engage in PvP or just enjoy a relaxing fishing tournament without getting our fish stolen and profanity yelled at us.

@@fallendeath16 "PVE doesn't carry this game", but the game doesn't exist without it either. How "alive" has the game been lately? How active is hourglass? The whole "we don't want to fix our issues" isn't issues brought on by Rare, they're brought on by the PVP community themselves. Only newer players or idiots actually attempt any of the world events, because everyone knows you have roughly 0.00001% chance to actually get the rewards after you spend 10minutes plus doing the event. The only way to get a braindead PVP'er to even come close to a FoF or FotD is if there is another ship already there and they just completed the event. Otherwise PVP'ers just keep sailing around gathering boards, cannonballs, and food from every island, passing up all the random loot that spawns in, or picking fights with absolutely everyone on the horizon. Say what you want, but the new PVP voyage will be dead in about a month because while there are random drop off zones for the skull, everyone is going to know all of them after a week. Then all the PVP'ers are just going to camp the drop off areas and wait for some idiot to collect both the chest and key to get the skull and head to the drop off. And with the slower sailing speed, the PVPer's that picked the wrong point will have time to get to the right one before the carrier ship does. Then it's a game of who can grab the skull and sell it in the mass chaos of every ship in the server fighting each other. You are just salty because Rare is finally giving us the game they promised at the very start, "You can play the game in your own way." It took them over 5 years to do so. PVP'ers will PVP even if they are the only ones wanting to do so (while calling everyone that doesn't toxic for some reason), and PVE'ers can't PVE because of the PVPer's. So PVE'ers leave the game like the PVP'ers want and then the game dies because there isn't anyone left for the PVP'ers to fight with other than other PVP'ers, and that's just like Arena and Hourglass, which PVP'ers already avoid. So, with the PVE'ers chased away telling the whole world that the game is nothing but d!ckheads that can't do anything but attack you constantly, and PVP'ers leaving because there isn't anyone to PVP against anymore and telling the whole world that SoT is a PVP game and if you don't want to be attacked constantly then you need to stop playing or never play to begin with, where does that leave the game? Nobody to play. Everyone cries when Rare adds new PVE to the game, but those same people haven't played the game in weeks because they have nothing to do without people willing to do the old PVE. The hungering deep was the best update seen by everyone because it was the only update that encouraged players to NOT K.O.S., if you wanted to do the new world event you couldn't kill everyone you met anymore. You actually had to put your guns down and talk to other real people and not just prey on "content", "hot mics", PVE'ers, or "runners" or whatever term you come up with other than "people". Finally, hitreg only happens to people who are quick scoping (wonder who that can be, hmm), hacking is encouraged because of all the PVP, the only toxicity in the game is from the ones calling everyone else toxic for not wanting to be toxic, and by "stuff" I can only assume you are talking about the bottom of the toilet bowl player count SoT has had lately (again, I wonder why everyone that use to play the game doesn't anymore, hmm).

I can agree. Similar points were made over and over, but the only answer was: get over it. For a long time, interaction with other players consisted of swearing and progress stalling. It was time-consuming and apparently people do not like, if their time gets disrespected.

I Think there's no real downside to including a PVE Mode. In fact, I'm one of those that have been strongly trying to campaign for it. Sea of thieves actually really interests me, but I'll just go ahead and post my steam review here to describe my past experience in the game: "Strictly PvP games are a cancer. I'm a somewhat casual gamer. I'll admit this. I'm also very much an introvert. But at the same time, I can understand why people want social based games, as it's a good and cool way to pull in people to play together. However... It is absolutely infuriating when you require that everyone else play in a competitive way, or offer incentives for picking on other players. You will piss everyone else off except for the absolute impotent and infantile scum that takes enjoyment from the destruction of others. This is literally my entire Sea of Thieves story: I did the maiden voyage. Nice. Had Fun. Good time. On my first voyage out on my own, as I turn the corner on an island, there's a ship that is lying in wait. I then am killed without provocation, or without any loot of value. They then spawn camp me on my own damn boat. On my third visit to the ferry, I notice a sign that says "Hey, you annoyed with this thing? Just sink your damn boat so you can deal with the thing that we know is a problem. Then, literally my second time playing; I spent three hours with a good friend of mine doing quests, and through circumstance of good fate, we amassed a great haul of loot. We were at the outpost trying to cash in at least 10 separate chests, at least 3 of them Captain chests. That's when a squad of assholes Started by shouting "We don't want any trouble" and then immediately firebombed our ship, and stole all of our loot. This is why any PvP based open world is bound to become filled with toxicity and rage. There is only reward and no drawback for being a horrible human being when people just want to play the damn game. There are several simple things that could be done to remedy this issue. 1: Offer a PvE mode. 2: Create drawbacks for taking other players' stuff. Even the Division realized that there should at least be some kind of consequence for stealing from the other players. 3: Make the fucking outposts a goddamn safe zone. 4: Don't base your game on a PvP system unless you have plans to make make a "peaceful" mode. (End Review)" The thing that infuriated me the most was that I got tons of responses to this review all saying something to the effect of either: 1: It's a game about pirates, 2: Git gud. This just showed me another side of the toxic base that, at least from my view, this game cultivated. I think that adding this PVE will give people an actual opportunity to not only get and find their sea legs, but also help them build themselves up and get an actual feel for the game before they can DECIDE they want to try something larger. Edit: I posted this comment about 70% though the video, and to give you a sense of perspective, I didn't even know that there was a story to this game. In my previous attempts, we were killed or harassed before I presume we could even get to any events that would be a part of that. I think this PVE aspect of will definitely be a help for it.

I couldn't have explained it better myself. SoT with its mechanics and features makes it a top Sea-Faring game. But, as you said, it is strongly held back by it's PvP nature instead focusing on the PvE and getting immersed in all you can do in the game. Other games have the same problem, games such as: Rust Escape From Tarkov GTA Online Red Dead Online Albion Online The Isle Hunt: Showdown I stopped playing all of these for that same specific reason. Great games, great immersion, great mechanics and features, great sandbox, great maps, great atmosphere great open world. All ruined by the PvP...

What's going to happen is an influx of new younger players, playing SOT. This will also bring back older players who left because of the toxicity. Eventually people will go into HS to reach Legend and attain more gold. They'll also go into hourglass. This means new meat for all you sweats, but it also means you had better stay frosty. I dont see how it means PvPers will have dead world events. If all the PvE casuals are in their own private worlds , that means every ship you DO see on the horizon is likely a PvPer now, which should mean even more competition for your world events. It just means PvPers dont get to seal club people who don't even want to PvP anymore. Some people actually just wanna chill and sail around with friends and fish or fight skeletons. Also, to those people like the person who made this video that are whining about having a pve mode, the only thing that you really care about is the loss of easy prey. There is literally no reason for people who like pvp to go into a pve only mode, so you are still gonna have plenty of people to fight, it's just gonna be people who actually are willing to fight and as a result, harder for you to beat in many cases.

If the argument is made that "People who cap out the progression in safer seas have no reason to continue playing in the main game, because why would you if you have done everything worth doing risk-free?", my response would be "Isn't that then a criticism of the game's surface level progression it's always had critics of?". Cosmetic only progression is only so appealing to so many players, and not necessarily worth the time and effort this game demands the farther you go. Sure, maybe some Emissary may be worth it. Maybe some Guild stuff. But if no one's interested, then the content isn't interesting. That's not the player's fault, that's their choice. People have always argued about the value the game rewards you with, for all the effort it demands. This is not new. As for the PvE being "boring or not", just let people choose for themselves. If what you want Rare isn't providing, there's other games out there for you. The PvP hardcore and the PvE hardcore will yell the same things endlessly. Just let give people the choice, especially for a game that seems to focus on "build your own fun".

@@thesun5275 Not every fight HAS to be equal. Sometimes chasing or being chased is part of the fun. PvP isn't just engaging relentlessly in a broadside attack. PvP is best when it is contextual, if you have a huge hoard of loot being chased becomes a game of cat and mouse and you have several options to handle the situation, and finally securing the loot after an intense chase feels much better than just pressing r passively for 20 minutes. Or when you are out to hunt other players as reaper, setting up a sucessfull ambush takes time and skill and has it's risks. you could keg the ancored enemy ship instead of trying to broadside them wich may give you an insta sink, OR your own ship is fucked if they discover the keg attempt and blow up your keg before you leave your ship. PvP IS what's the game is mainly about, no amount of boring super easy PvE content will ever have enough satisfaction to keep a decent sized playerbase engaged, and people need to get off the high horse and accept that ambushes and unequal fights are part of the game. We are fighting for cosmetics not for "rank" or actual worthwhile loot afterall.

Though I understand and even agree with a lot of the logic behind this decision, I am still weary of it. My big worry is that this will irrevocably polarize the game. That even with the level caps, all the PvErs who want to chill and relax will be content with Safer Seas and just stay there. And with little PvErs left in regular mode, the PvPers will be left to duke it out with equally competitive, battle hungry pirates 24/7. Allowing them to become much more pvp savvy and skilled then they would have otherwise. This means that if anyone chooses to leave the Safer Seas and head over to the regular gamemode, they would likely be pit against hypercompetitive, hypercompetant PvPers and instantly lose. And not wanting to put the effort into being better at something they don't even enjoy to begin with, the PvErs will walk right back on over to Safer Seas and stay there forever. Thus splitting the community in two. This is all of course assumption, so we'll see what actually happens.

This is a possibility, but it is somewhat the fault of the PvP players constantly dunking on (or trying to ) ship in sight. @KEEYBLADE
@KEEYBLADE 10 месяцев назад
5:13 Hard disagree. Do you stop playing a game when you reach the level cap? I really don't think PVE players play for the progression. They play for the Tall Tales, the atmosphere, the world itself. SoT is still a sandbox game. It is whatever you want it to be. This is still the heart of the game. Just sailing around with the ship, doing casual adventures. People who ONLY play for progression doesn't really want to play the game anyway. If the core gameplay is not fun for you, and you only play for progression, then you are playing the wrong game. For me, safer seas will be my return to SoT, since I was really sick of all the griefers I encountered. And no, I don't mean enemy players, that want to steal my loot. I really mean pure griefers, that have no reason at all to attack me, since I have no loot, don't sail as an emmissary and don't act hostile in the slightest. These people, who are ruining the fun of others, with no gain, really annoyed me. Another thing is, that PVP is really bad in SoT. Ship fights are cool, yes, but the gunfights and swordfights feel like trash. It's just the weird ping and server connection. Sea of Thieves has a lot of missions, where you are forced to leave your ship alone, while you are doing quests on islands or in the underwater shrines. Meanwhile your ship is vulnerable, and other players can come and just sink it. Where is the fun in that? Especially for people who after a long workday want to sail around a bit, doing some small quests, not engage in PVP in any way. This is the problem. You don't decide if you engage in PVP. The other player decides.

Here's my idea of how to accommodate casual players who struggle with PVP: I've been playing many games where PVP is only possible through invite or in specific areas or zones. For Sea Of Thieves, I'd recommend installing some PVP free corridors to certain missions and achievements. Leave some places open for stress free exploration and gameplay with friends, guilds, etc. A majority of the map would be open to PVP and random encounters, but certain areas can be PVP free to make avoiding other ships less strenuous. My biggest complaint is gatekeeping players from buying and customizing their own ships.

The question I think Rare need to ask themselves is what is the harm in having a true PvE server? If PvP players honestly believe that everyone would 'just play PvE' given the option, then doesn't that tell you that that's ultimately where the market is? Those who actually want PvP would at least be in a server with like-minded people while the rest could enjoy everything the game has to offer with peace of mind. The only reason people scoff at this idea is because it either doesn't fit thematically with their perception of the game, or because they know it would reduce the number of easy targets for them.

I'm a disabled guy (blindness), and totally loved playing SOT with my wife (also disabled) and kiddo (ALSO disabled)... we all had amazing times playing SOT. Even spent cash to get our little ragamuffins. UNTIL. Yes. Until. Until encountering the constant griefers. Until encountering the players who make it a point to hunt out what are obvious newbie crews and completely decimating them, all the while laughing and screaming "newbs". Until we'd spend hours gathering treasures and awesome things, only to be destroyed by a galleon filled with the worst assholes you could imagine. Disheartening, to say the least, and walking into it with LITERAL HANDICAPS makes a game like this even more complex than "normies" could understand. So... we walked away from it. 3 people... an entire family, said "F this" and walked away. We're looking forward to the PvE servers. I know we're NOT alone with this kind of experience, and Rare has done itself a big disservice NOT having it in previously. We're coming back to the game on this release. It SUCKS it's going to have such dramatically diminished rewards, but... whatever. We'll still have fun with it, I am sure. We'll likely even toss some cash their way in appreciation. This change is a good one, for reasons a lot of people might not realize. Accessibility in games is pretty freakin' important. EDITING TO ADD: The main gist is I have never wanted to PvP, and we left because of it. We're never, EVER, going to go "pvp mode" or have any interest in the "high seas" portion of things. Ever. EVER. So the people crying about how this is going to diminish PvP targets? They'd NOT HAVE THEM ANYWAY, because we wouldn't even have the game installed.
