In 4K 60fps, we drive along the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver, BC to the resort town of Whistler, around 120km north of the city, located within the stunning Coast Mountains, and home to the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort. Vancouver and Whistler were host to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.
BC Highway 99, the Sea to Sky Highway, first opened in 1958 as the Seaview Highway, between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish alongside the Howe Sound fjord, then later extended to Alta Lake (Whistler), and then further north to Pemberton. In the 2000s, the highway saw significant upgrades to improve safety and increase capacity ahead of the Olympics, primarily between Horsehoe Bay and Squamish.
Our drive to day begins just east of Vancouver proper, from the City of Surrey, then following Trans Canada Highway 1 over the Port Mann Bridge towards Vancouver, as we connect to the Sea to Sky Highway.

great video! i remember taking this route to squamish 2 years ago for camping, amazing views. i took this route many times before that, so this is familiar to me (at least up to whistler because i’ve only been to whistler once).

Thanks so much for the video. Congratulations on 1500 subscribers. I've never been beyond the Capilano Bridge, so thanks for taking me along. I love your videos and I like the fact that you use real music not that techno junk like most road videographers do.

Always surprise me that the Vancouver area only has a little over 2.5 million people. Anyway, great video.

12:26 I remember reading a news article around 6-7 years ago that said MoTI was considering raising the 60 km/h limit to 70 km/h (making it only a single speed drop, as opposed to two). Obviously that never ended up happening. I imagine the 60 km/h speed limit comes from the design speed of the Lions Bay segment, with the sharper curves.

I believe other than the curve near the Brunswick exit, 70km/h-80km/h would be fine, though at the behest of increased noise for Lions Bay. I believe the 60km/h limit ties in with some pedestrian fatalities in the area that happened on the highway before the upgrades took place for the Olympics.

@@xlboltI mean, traffic already does at least 80 km/h through Lions Bay. So it’s not like increasing the speed limit to 70 km/h would increase noise much! I drove the Sea to Sky in Summer 2020, and I’m shocked that the southern segment from Horseshoe Bay to Squamish was posted at 90 km/h (from 2014 to 2018). Sure, I am less familiar with the road and its characteristics. But it’s so curvilinear, that it’s fairly pointless for it to be posted above its design speed (80 km/h). Other than the longer straight stretch with the steep grade near Furry Creek, 80 km/h seems totally reasonable to me. As for the northern segment (Squamish to Whistler), 90 km/h seems kind of low during ideal conditions. The roll back would have made more sense if that section didn’t have the variable speed limit. It did see an increase in crashes, but the variable speed limit wasn’t in place until the second year of the study. So any data from the first year wouldn’t be super fair to use.

I have more in depth sound for the lions bay pavement on my channel it has a distinct hollow noise when your going up north with bumpy exits. Besides that I’m one of the few people who film the 262 bus route

Did they have bus stops in the 60km zone of lions bay before they did the upgrades? They have bus stops placed on the highway south for the 262 but the 259 was a big deal before the upgrades

Great video! 21:15 Huh, I suppose if you visit Whistler enough it might work. I guess the access to Whistler offsets the costs a bit.

5:03 I’m surprised they haven’t upgraded the lighting to LED in the Cassiar Tunnel. Seems weird that they haven’t yet. 9:15 I love that guide sign, showing the split at Horseshoe Bay! 31:25 Average Tesla driver…. 😂

I think they'll likely upgrade the lighting whenever they end up repaving the Vancouver portion of the highway. Believe they did the Burnaby portion in 2020 and Surrey & Coquitlam in 2022 and 2023, but unsure if they've worked west of Willingdon yet.

At the start, you started with "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. Fun fact, not only this song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (for 3 weeks from Oct. 13 to Oct. 27, 1984), but also #1 in most music charts, including Canada. Speaking of which, when it comes to year-ends, it was the #1 song of 1984 in Canada according to RPM Magazine. It was also the #1 song of 1984 in Flanders and the Dutch Top 40. Lastly, is that song really safe to use?

Given the traffic volumes, I think it needs to be a 4-lane freeway all the way to Whistler, although the costs would obviously be an issue (even if the speed limit remains 80 km/h south of Squamish with no change in design speed). There's a few sections where such would be very difficult.
@stevechapman8815

That’s an understatement friend. Some sections of this road will never be four lanes.
@craigceecee8762

@@stevechapman8815 Several tunnels would almost certainly be required and that would be very expensive (since there is no room to move closer to the water due to the tracks and the mountains are too tall to blast). North of Squamish is entirely doable though.

I think Highway 1 is more important to finish making freeway. (I'm talking about redesignating the Coq as 1 to avoid twinning the canyon and finish the rest of the highway to the Alberta border.) Although twinning is doable here, like all other places in BC, its inhospitable terrain makes road construction hugely expensive.

Every time you travel outside your home in Vancouver, how many times you visit Whistler up north?
