Sea Turtle Release | Tybee Island Marine Science Center 

For the past 3 years, the Tybee Island Marine Science Center has cared for Ike, the loggerhead sea turtle. Ike was a "straggler," meaning he didn't leave the nest after hatching, so the Marine Science Center adopted him as a "debris ambassador," helping to educate the public about the dangers of marine pollution such as plastics. On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the #TybeeIslandMarineScienceCenter team released Ike back into the wild, with hundreds of supporters lining the beach for the release.

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center features several galleries housing various live animals, an interactive exhibit of Gray’s Reef, an outdoor amphitheater and playground, and even an underground area with large tanks for housing sea turtles in rehabilitation. The Tybee Island Marine Science Center’s mission is to shape responsible stewardship of Coastal Georgia’s natural resources through marine science-based education, conservation, and research.
