Our newer videos have less text on screen, fewer photos and more video, and better audio quality. Be sure to check one out! Here's our recommendation: Sea Biscuit Facts - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OI8b1GWZPY8.html We're also on Patreon! Sorry for any confusion!)

It's probably pretty likely that urchins last that long, especially in colder, deeper waters where the predation pressure is lessened. For people that wanna learn more about these guys, I super recommend following Christopher Mah on twitter, he's pretty much one of the world's best experts on urchins and the other echinoderms. Also, I like that you included the flower urchin in the background there, those guys are super seriously venomous and would be worth an episode by themselves! Also, you should check out helmet urchins, they're these super amazing flattened, smooth urchins that live on the shore and are adapted to resist waves. I'm also a big fan of cidaroid urchins, which are these real bizarre deep sea urchins that have funky spines. Good video guys!

I can definitely second the Christopher Mah recommendation. He's the go to source for echinoderms. =) I love the idea of some thousands year old urchin just chillin' on the seafloor.

There is a species of sea urchin I saw on a documentary a while back. It lives at the bottom of the ocean and doesn't reproduce by spawning. They actually do the do and their spines make it very challenging.
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 5 лет назад
Ahh! Do you happen to know the name of the documentary or even where it aired? I was talking to somebody about a short video of urchins getting quite close and cuddly, and we weren't sure on the reasoning behind it. It would be interesting to learn more about the ones you're speaking of!

@@AnimalFactFiles the species of sea urchin may have been an aspidodiadema but I'm not completely sure. It was a species with s really tiny body with really long spikes like that.
