SeaGull 1963 38mm vs 40mm - Should you buy the 38mm or the 40mm?

Today is a bit of a review / impressions / side by side video of the SeaGull 1963 38mm.
I want to compare it to my 40mm version and give you some thoughts about ownership of both sizes.

I bought the 38mm with Sapphire 3 years ago from Chrono 24 with a two year guarantee. It came in a wooden green box with a big red star on the hinged lid. It arrived with a high quality green nato and a light brown Rios strap. For casual I use the nato with the single layer method. I wear it daily on the Rios as a dressy watch. Two watches in one. I have a seven and a quarter inch wrist. I love it's 2 day power reserve.

interesting , from what i hear the movement has a significant failure rate i am going to buy one because they are cheap but would not be my daily driver

I also initially also bought the 40 mm. However, just like you, my wrist is 6 3/4 inches and it just didn't look right. I returned it and got the 38 mm and love it. And just a friendly FYI, if the watch has two lines of text, it's an original seagull 1963. If it has one line of text, it's an "authorized" reproduction with an original movement.

I have the 40 mm version with the lume dots on the dial. It’s a stunning watch and I actually like how it sits on my wrist. It’s actually my first hand wind chronograph and I love it to bits. I especially love the recessed rings in the subdials. I got it on the recent summer sale for about $136 Canadian which is just over $100 US.

Excellent comments. I even say that 47mm lug-to-lug is quite a lot for a 38mm, but i won't complain as i wear that lug-to-lug on my 6,5"-ish wrist anyway. Definitely going to consider the 38! Thanks, cheers.

Excellent. Commenting now, but will watch it later! For me it would have to be 40mm given my 8“ + wrist and even that's a little bit small, 42mm seems to be a good size for me.

I would definitely recommend the 38mm. The long lugs really change the on wrist experience and make the larger watch sit a bit odd on wrist.

Just pulled the trigger on the 38mm! It's only the second mechanical watch I've ever bought (previous one was an ORIS in 1990s)

i don't know why but the version with the acrylic crystal looks the best to me. the 38mm is the way to go indeed.

My wrist size is 185mm, i love the classic 38mm. I think the 40mm looks better on m wrist. Iam not sure

It is more about the length of lugs that caused me issues. The 40mm case was great. But the lugs on this watch a longer than any other watch I’ve experienced. I would suggest the 38mm for your wrist personally.

17cm. It really comes down to the long lugs. The 40mm is normally my favourite size. But in this watch with this lugs it was way to big. So I would recommend the 38mm.

What is your opinion on the quality control?. I’m interested in one of these but it seems like a crapshoot as to whether you get a good one or a lemon.

I’ve owned two and both have been perfect. No GC issues and both ran very well. The movements are know to be occasionally unreliable. But I have not actually heard any first hand issues with them.

Having owned 6 variations (Sea-Gull, Sugess, etc) of watch using this movement, I have had no QC problems. Nicest version I have is the Bronze Pilot but I got charged customs duty bringing this into the UK which I did not with the others. Don't know if they assessed it as precious metals or something equally silly.

Even with 38mm the lug still looks funny I have this watch the lugs are really downside of this watch

It is a shame. The 38mm certainly allows it to sit on my wrist better. But yes. They still are a bit long.

The larger lug to lug of the 40mm did feel funny on my wrist. It made the strap look a bit weird.

I don't quite get why you need to use 100 words when 10 would do. You keep saying the same thing over and over but just changing the odd word. I don't understand why it takes you 100 words to say what could be said in 10 words. You seem to like to say the same thing over and over just using some alternative words. I'm not sure why yo use 100 words.............

Typical military watches have slim bezels, flat dials with expansive markings, long lugs, all of which lead to them wearing super large. Strangely, modern reissues of those vintage watches come in "updated" sizes which makes them wear even larger or rather: unwearable. I have a 39.5 mm Seiko SRPG with rather short lugs that I never wear because it looks just tacky on my normal 175 mm wrist and it wears like a dive watch.

There is a great video made by Just one more watch talking about these watches and what is considered official. I know they are not made by Sea-Gull. But they are still considered real.
