I’ve had great feedback from my ‘Chord Cheat Sheet’.
People seem to find it really useful, so I recommend making the most of that

Which type of Seagull Merlin M4 sounds better?
I wanted to see if there was a notable sound difference between the two different types of wood tops -- spruce or mahogany -- used in constructing the Seagull Merlin M4 stick dulcimer guitar. So I did a quick run-through on each version to see if I could tell, and sure enough, there is!!

Super helpful. I've played plenty of keyed or wind instruments but this will be my first string one. This helps me a lot of which one to buy.

Glad it helped! I personally do enjoy the mahogany more, but it's def down to preference.

I typically like warmer tones, but in this case, the spruce wins for me.

I've been collecting little instruments for the past year or so. Have a Martin Backpacker; I've "adopted" my wife's Art & Lutherie AMI Wild Cherry parlor guitar (another nice instrument from Quebec); recently bought a Yamaha Guitalele GL-1 (in 'tobacco burst' finish), and I picked up a McNally Strumstick a couple of weeks ago. The Seagull Merlin is next on the list! I'm going with the spruce top model with EQ so I can amplify and run it through the looper. So fun.

@HeyInglewood 3 года назад
Wow, you're really going for it. Keep up with all the instruments, that's a lot! But having a looper for it would be pretty fun. If you're interested in collecting more instruments, I have a brand new river dulcimer guitar design coming out in Oct/Nov. Sign up for emails on the website and you'll know when it hits. Early prototypes are cherry, mahogany, and purple heart fretboards. Parlor guitar-esque shape :-)

Amazing the difference the wood makes to the sound mahogany a lot warmer

It's crazy how one change can make all the difference. It's also the prettier wood (IMO), and both are probably why it's used on the G model.

Mahogany really have warmer tone, spruce sounds more like lute for me. Anyway we hadn’t mahogany top seagull Merlin in our music shop, so I bought spruce one, and I love ❤️ it so much! I’m not a big guitar 🎸 player in a many reasons, like small hands 🖐, and too flexible fingers 💅, because of that they bend too much and I can not take the chord correctly, also it’s painful. So this instrument save me in all ways, it’s easy to play, easy to travel, it don’t take much place at home. Only one minus it have, because it’s new kind of dulcimer it’s hard to find free tabs for it, it can be a problem if you don’t know notes 🎶 and chords 🎵 like I do.)))

Good news, I saw today that they bring one mahogany top M4 to music shop. Probably I want it to my birthday))) I have a question about how do you care about your M4? In our music shops they don’t have some special polish from Godin guitars, only lemon oil which is not good for M4! I asked developers, they answered to use only their polish, but what to do if we had no any non lemon polish? Maybe you know some other brands that don’t use lemon oil or wax on their polish?

Do you think adding a pickup to one of these merlins would work? I wonder if it has enough room . I currently busk with a ukulele and im looking at getting the merlin very soon and think it could be fun to take out sometimes.
@HeyInglewood
@HeyInglewood Год назад
It absolutely works, tho you’ll want to put the question to the Facebook group to see who’s tried which devices I think. Seagull makes a pickup version as well (“EQ” model)
@kitty79532
@kitty79532 Год назад
@@HeyInglewood I don't have Facebook or really any social media aside from this account. I know they sell a version with a pickup but my father ended up buying me a merlin as a gift and I'd like to not buy a second one. :)

Do I see an EQ in the Mahogany top one?
@HeyInglewood
@HeyInglewood 2 года назад
yup! but it makes 0 difference in tone, as there's no contact with the top resonance. I've tried it on all 4 flavors (spruce, mahogany, EQ + not).

Godin needs to put the neck at a better angle to improve the string break. It would help tremendously with the string action and tone.
@HeyInglewood

Would lowering the bridge achieve a similar result? The height at the octave is a bit much for me, have been considering options
@gevansmd1
@gevansmd1 4 года назад
The difference is definitely clear. The spruce top is sharper, the mahogany is warmer.

The mahogany sounds not as loud and warmer. I think it sounds better not as pericing

Totally agree. It's slight, but it's enough to make a difference.

I find also G tuned M4 on a Seagull shop. What I want to ask, can I tune D m4 to G m4? Do I need another strings? If I will buy second mahogany top seagull M4 on D can I also tune it into G, is there some difference between them?
@HeyInglewood
@HeyInglewood 4 года назад
you won't be able to tune up to a G without making the strings break or be too hard to press down. you have to have a different set of strings. a different gauge. i'm not sure the actual gauge, but a good guitar shop should be able to help you figure that out. there are options.
@tatianatarakanova295

Stick Dulcimers, you know I was asking also one RU-vidr that have G model, so she answered that I can’t do that without buying another bridge. I need to think about building one more M4. Because they bring only D models on our shop.
@HeyInglewood

@@tatianatarakanova295 I don't know anything about the bridge, so if you find out something about that, let me know.

Well I will just resend you her answer lower, and will write my thoughts because it also the things that I think about. Seagull selling mahogany and spruce dulcimer in D for left and right hand and mahogany also model in G. Because of the thickness of strings it gives more pressure on bridge and saddle if we just think logical, it’s simple physics. So that was my thoughts but there’s no any info on seagull official page so I was asking players and managers of seagull. I have send letter to seagull so they answered me after you «The M4 G has different strings and a different saddle.» And here review from woman that play both and also other kinds dulcimers and banjo. «Hey Tatiana! The difference is the the nut and bridge. The G has much much fatter strings on it so the grooves are a lot wider to accommodate the larger strings. I wouldn't recommend switching any G to a D. But you could switch a D to a G by widening the nut and bridge grooves (but then you wouldn't want to go back to D). Hope that helps!» I hope it will help you and me to find more information, because in my shop sellers don’t know nothing about instrument and don’t sell any parts of it, they even didn’t have original Godin strings that very bothering me.

The bridge change would make sense. It would be slight, but it's probably enough that you'd want to be careful about it for sure.
