KAOS product specialist Ryan Jenkins takes a look at the coolest new 4-string instrument from our good friends at Seagull Guitars, the Merlin. Inspired by the dulcimer, the Merlin sounds a like a cross between a banjo and a mandolin, but is truly a unique sounding instrument and it's simple tuning and completely diatonic design make it super easy to play for everyone, beginners and experts alike. Here's what the folks at Seagull have to say about the Merlin:
Made in LaPatrie Quebec, Canada and inspired by the dulcimer, the Seagull Merlin is a very portable & compact 4-string diatonic acoustic instrument that is simply fun to play and very hard to put down!
The Merlin was designed to introduce & stimulate people of all ages (some of whom may not necessarily be players) to the joy of creating & playing music.Small in stature. Big in fun!
Here are the specs:
Price: $129
Neck: Rock maple, neck-thru-body design
Frets: 8
Body: Rock maple with maple of mahogany top
Finish: Satin oil finish

I have been a pro bassist for over 50 years, and I also play guitar and banjo and mandolin. My wife got me one of these for Christmas ,and I am so in love with this thing. I just love to play it, and can't seem to put it down. If you want to have some fun get you one. I LOVE IT!!

I just love this instrument because I can give it the most bizarre tunings. Right now I have it set up as a C# minor, so Low C#, middle string G#, and top two strings E and C#. Really exotic sound. Plus it's cheep, so like why not get it.

Tere, universum ! Onpa metka soitin tämä Seagull Merlin, jota oli helppo oppia, kun minulla oli ennestään olemassa 3-kielinen strumstick, jota käytän Kassiahastuksen keikoilla jatkuvasti. Kevyt roudata. Niissä on lähes sama sormituskin. Stick soi parhaiten g-duurissa ja tämä seagull on d-duurissa. It was pretty easy to learn play seagull, because I have had played for years strumstick, which I bougt in Winchester, VA.

So if I want to play my guitar alongside the merlin would I have to put a capo on my guitar?

+Damphampster Not sure if you've already bought the merlin but to play it left handed you'd need to cut a new nut and bridge saddle to reverse the strings.

It sounds nothing like a banjo, it kinda sounds like a mandolin, like a shitty mandolin. Why not just play a mandolin instead of creating a needlessly diatonic instrument. People were sitting around thinking "we've got a perfectly good chromatic instrument here, how can we ruin it? I know, lets take out half the frets for no reason."
@claryandrews8299
@claryandrews8299 8 лет назад
it was inspired off of the dulcimer, which I also play. and the dulcimer has been around for a while, so you shouldn't be one to judge. I play eight instruments, and this one is honestly my favorite.
@williecrook1279

+clarycha yup, you're right, I should definitely stop being such a grump and try to be more supportive of people being into whatever they're into. Thanks!

Diatonic glissandos are especially beautiful, and are unachievable on chromatically fretted instruments. Orchestras have pedal harps and Sitars have 8 extra strings largely to produce a similar effect.
