Seaham - A must visit location on the East Durham Coast.
I've lived close to Seaham all my life but never really appreciated it. For many years it was an industrial town in the heart of the Durham coalfields, exporting the coal to the rest of the country. The coastline suffered at the hands of industry but with the demise of the coal mines in the 80s and 90s the shattered community needed to re-invent itself. Tourism and retail is the new industry that drives Seaham, but there are plenty of reminders of who and what built the town. Join me on a coastal walk along the seafront from the North Shore (Vane Tempest beach) to Noses Point to look over The Blast (Blast Beach) where Ridley Scott filmed Alien 3's opening scenes. On the way we'll take in all of the public art including the famous 'Tommy'.

We enjoyed the coast stroll, Andy. Beautiful beach and we love finding sea glass. It can be found where were from along Lake Superior. Seaham looks like a lovely, quaint, coastal town. Tommy is a lovely statue by a well know artist! I think I may have liked the second one even more!Smart of Seaham to keep him there. Rough sea! The Royal Lifeboat Institution sounds like a wonderful organization somewhat like our Coast Guard. Our's is a branch of the military here, dedicated mostly to rescue, but does also deal with smuggling. Loved the tour!

Thanks for watching Dave and Kathy. It's interesting to hear that Lake Superior has sea glass, too. Our lifeboats are a charity and operated by volunteers. We have a Coast Guard too, they will call out the lifeboats if needed, a helicopter from the RAF or a larger ship (in the instances of smuggling) from the Royal Navy. Sounds complicated and typically British 😀. Have a great weekend.

Never seen that gun before but it must be 5 years since our first and last visit to Seaham. Tommy was and still is very impressive and real nice that he has been kept in Seaham. Shame that sun did not come completely out and it must be time for the mist and murk to go before long surely, cheers Alan

Hi Alan. Yeah, the gun is a recent addition. As I live a couple of miles away, it seemed rude not to do a vlog about it. This route, more or less, is my Saturday morning walk after I drop Mrs Out and About with Andy off at work. Hopefully, not before too long, I'll be able to do it in a t shirt. Thanks for watching Alan.

I wish I had a sea wall in Florida like that! The images I could have taken with one of those! Wow! Interesting stories about Seaham's coal mining past, very reminiscent of the local history here in WV. Seaham looks like a great little seaside town, well worth the visit. Thanks for the look around, really enjoyed that! Have a great weekend Andrew!

Hi Paul. The sea wall is great for local photographers, then there are 4 beaches to shoot too. Seaham's 3 mines were part of the Durham Coalfield, which in its heyday had 304 collieries, all now part of history. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour, and thanks for watching, Paul. Enjoy your weekend, too!

Hello Andy, really enjoyed your walk along the Seaham coast line. I couldn't get over how rough the sea was. The statue of Tommy was amazing. The idea of glass collecting as a hobby intrigues me. This looks a lovely sea side place to visit. The waves coming over the wall and the lighthouse were fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing, take care x Julie and Tony x

Thanks for watching Julie and Tony. The old North Sea gets rough around here. There are some reefs off the harbour, which seems to stir up the surf. We get surfers out along the main beach, even at this time of year. Tommy is one of the reasons we get visitors to Seaham, I think you might have seen some of Ray Lonsdale's work when you visited Filey. Sea Glass is one of those things where you start, and you can't stop. There are at least 50-100 people out looking for it when we do our morning walk on a Saturday.

Looks like a nice place to spend the afternoon. Don't blame you for wanting to come back when it's warmer to hunt for glass. Tommy is really well put together, easy to see why the town wanted to keep him. Interesting story about the brothers and their affect. Wow those were some huge breaks 😲😲

This was awesome Andy, super super interesting and just wonderful to enjoy a stroll with you around Seaham, i'd never heard of the place.. being a southerner hehe, but it looks wonderful, a seaside town but love all the spots you took us too. The views over the harbour were just amazing, it was so satisfying watching those mean waves!! So cool!!! Thank you so much for putting this together and what an epic premiere, great chat! 🌊🌊🐚🐚

To be honest, Alessa, many years ago, Seaham wasn't worth talking about. It was a hard-working mining town and industrial port where mining waste was thrown into the sea (along with the glass). The demise of the mines has led to the rise in tourism after much investment. There is still a way to go, but Seaham is now seen as a place people want to move to. Hopefully, some of this video showed why that is. Thanks for watching 🙂.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Your Dad would have struggled to find much sea coal these days. Most of Blast Beach has been given a clean-up, although there are still a few warnings about industrial contamination. I have seen sea coal collected from the beach in the harbour in Hartlepool. It isn't much more than dust these days. Just a distant reminder of the old industrial past of the North East.

Hey Andy 😊 I’ve been glass collecting along seaham, still have some sat in a flower pot at home 😊 great to see a litter picking group out. Looked a bit moody out at sea, still it’s always relaxing by the coast. Some big looking waves out there 🌊Tommy is a great to seaham. Such a fab tour Andy fantastic information

Thanks for watching Yasmin. The old sea glass is an addictive pastime, I have a small amount here but I don't think I'd get into it big time, it's hard work! Seaham is a much nicer place than it was many years ago, I think there is a lot of pride in both it's past and what it is now becoming.

Thanks Andy. Your video brought back some nice memories. Strangely exactly a year ago we were there in Seaham - our only visit so far! Mrs E does crafting and wanted to visit Seaham for sea glass. Sadly the tide was in so she didn’t get as much as hoped. It also rained most of the day. We enjoyed seeing ‘Tommy’ and exploring the bits of the beach available. Don’t think the sea was quite as choppy as it was in your video, when we visited. I think we’ll have to go back as we didn’t get quite as far as you did. Great video. 👍
@OutandaboutwithAndy
@OutandaboutwithAndy 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching. Vane Tempest Beach tends to be the one most sea glass collectors use, but as you found, the tide comes right into the promenade. It's always good to check the tide times and get there after the high tide. The local collectors are usually on the beach straight after for all the best bits! There is quite a bit to see in Seaham and a good variety of coffee shops and restaurants, including 3 fish and chip shops on the sea front.

Thanks Cara, the January new moon tide was huge. People were just standing watching the waves. I wished I'd managed to get more footage of that. This was nearly as impressive. Sea glass hunting is a big thing here, and it is amazing how colourful some of the pieces are. It is ironic that most of the multi-coloured ones were actually slag/waste glass from moulds and dumped into the sea 100+ years ago. Thanks for watching.

Absolutely fascinating video Andy, definately one of your best yet, I love a rugged coastline & a rough sea, something mystical about it. The sculptures were very interesting indeed & the harbour too was full of character & surprises, any stretch of the east coastline from the Wash northwards really does take some beating Andy, thoroughly enjoyable m8 & well done 👍

The new moon tide in January was huge, the folk I was talking to were saying it was the highest swell they'd seen in years. People were getting a coffee or something to eat and sitting on the benches just watching it. I'll be doing the walk again on Saturday morning. It seems a shorter walk when you don't vlog it. 😀 Thanks for watching, guys.

That was great! I've never been to this part of the NE Coast - something I need to remedy. The sea glass bit at the start was interesting because the first part of my life was as an apprentice glass decorator, where I worked under Stan Scott, a well respected stained glass designer. Stan Scott would use exclusively coloured glass from Hartley Wood and Company in Sunderland. I'm sure a lot of the coloured glass found on the beach would have originated at Hartley Woods. The "Tommy" sculptor also made the monument to Emily Davidson in Morpeth, the suffragette who died when trying to hamper the king's horse in the Derby. I like the work of Ray Lonsdale. Keith
@OutandaboutwithAndy
@OutandaboutwithAndy 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, Keith. I'm sure there will be quite a bit of glass in the sea from all the glassworks in Sunderland. Ray's sculptures are all over the North now. I remember seeing the start of the horses in his South Hetton works that became the shire horses for the Vaux Brewery dray that is now in Keel Square in Sunderland, the workmanship is quite interesting to see.

Never knew Seaham had so much going on Andrew ! Hope all of Seaham voted remain after the EU funding transformed / saved it ! Look forward to a film on the glass collecting btw - never heard of that before. Splendid Tommy structure reminds me of Antony Gormley structures. Ironically a great day for photography with that mist and crashing waves on the pier - spectacular 🌊 Had no idea about Alien either - only been once and that was to Chemical Beach to shoot the bogey wheels and sea stack, very interesting and great sharing of your local knowledge 👍🏻

The sea glass was so pretty - it would look lovely in pots and vases. I think it's fantastic that volunteers clean the litter off the beaches. Thanks for watching Julie and Lucy. With the waves being that strong in winter, it is an endless battle to keep the beaches clear of debris that comes in with the tide. The volunteers do fantastic work. Sea glass tourism is a strange thing but incredibly popular here, that said I travel to photograph certain locations.
