Last night I just finished treating the gas tank of my 1997 Suzuki RF900R that has a 5.55 gallon metal tank. I've had my Suzuki since new but my carburetors got clogged with so much rust inside the tank. Let me tell you that, honestly, I could NOT be happier with this KBS Tank Sealer Kit product. I took my time within a 2-day time period to do it right. I followed the instructions in this video except that I gave it extra time so the RustBlast could finish etching and graying the entire interior of my tank. In my view Rustblast is simply amazing. it perfectly coats the entire tank with zinc. I poured the left-over RustBlast in a bucket full of old rusted screw driver bits and it restored them really well. I poured it back into its original bottle and keeping handy to zinc any other rusted part in the future. I consider the sealer in this kit to be perfect too. Once you stir it up really well, you get a runny sealer that reaches and immediately coats every single little crevice inside the tank. It applies a nice, even, thick coat all over without leaving any voids. The amount of sealer in this kit was just enough to coat my entire 5.55 gallon metal tank. I am now just waiting for the recommended 5 days to let the sealer completely cure before I pour gasoline back into my tank. Thank you KBS. It's been truly a pleasure using your product.

Just to help anyone out. I did this on an 07 GSX-R . If you are doing this to a sports bike tank or anything with a large opening on the bottom for the fuel pump. I wedged a styrofoam cup in and that did provide a good watertight seal. Duct tape did not work. Taking a few spare nuts and putting them on a chain to bounce around was critical for built up gunk. Don’t toss in loose bolts unless you like fishing and cursing. Additionally on my tank a siphon was a MUST, pick up two cheap siphons. Use one for the cleaner / etch. And the other for the sealer. The curvature of the tank did not allow for adequate drainage by itself. Wait until the sealer is ready to be drained, then siphon ,leaving just enough to roll around to fill in any smudges made while pumping it out. This stuff works really dam well and I hope my tips help!

Worked great. Tie your ring of nuts to about 18” of fishing line, let 2 or 3” stick outside the tank opening and snap the cap down tight on it. When you’re finished just pull the nut ring out. Just a tip but not really necessary.

Using this at the moment, pays to have at least 5L demineralised water, a wet vac and hair dryer available. At least two days to do it properly helps so handy to do it while getting over covid. Had fair amount of rust so used double strength cleaning vinegar twice with 4-5mm ball bearings and some soak time, removed plenty of rust n varnish. Rinsed multiple times with tap water and dried with hair dryer. Followed KBS instructions after that but used demineralised water to avoid flash rust. My tank doesn't drain so wet vac is worth its weight in gold, so is duct tape and a short length of small black poly pipe. Cheers.

Rust is amazing. Takes rust away with little effort. Anyone who wants to use this patients is the key. I have a xv750j virago, the tank has a enormous frame tunnel unlike the one in the video. You will need to flip the tank for serveral hours becasue of how odd shaped this tank is. Everytime i thought i got the sealer out more would just pour out. I baby sat the tank for hours. Fliping the tank as to not let the sealer pool. This is the second time i did it to this tank. The first time did not go to well. But due to another issue with the tank i needed to stripe the sealer out. Although it worked out in the end striping this odd shape tank took 2 days to clean out. Not fun at all. I have a 2013 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom. KBS Klean did a great job getting the varnish/residue out of the tank so I can clearly see all the rust that needs to get cleaned out by the RustBlast. Not sure if it is related, but the duct tape did not keep the holes closed where the fuel pump and gauge would normally sit. Since the purpose of the Klean is to break down the gummy substances, this may also counteract the stickiness of the tape. I did have plastic over the holes secured by rubber bands just in case - I did have some fluid leakage that made it through both barriers on the tank underbelly. Plastic under the gas cap kept a pretty good seal.

Tried this product on my gas tank last night. The acid did the trick, but then to wash it out with water... water on bear metal... and then drying with forced air and heat, the inside turned back into that orange rust color again. Again... It was super clean after the acid was drained, but after following the directions further, the surface became that rust brown color. What gives?? Is the sealer really going to adhere to that??

I believe that’s the Zinc Phosphate he explains, you get in the video. Read some comments as well; some replies explains that this is normal and that it is what the Sealer Adheres to. If there are any doubts wash it all out, use Acetone then check out Red Kote tank liner; similar process. However this product has way more instructions and a complete kit, versus buying everything individually; seems to have very promising results. Hope this helps ✌️

I used an air gun and heater to dry it out but there's a few water stains. It's completely rust free inside and no flash rust as yet
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us 11 месяцев назад
No flash rust is 100% normal. You can always reuse the strained and captured RustBlast. And a nice rinse with water is all that is needed. And like you did, dry the tank well after rinsing. RustBlast will leave behind a dusting of zinc phosphate that aids in the adhesion of Tank Sealer.

How do you handle a Harley gas tank with fuel injection that is inside the tank attached to a fuel plate cover that is approximately 8" x 4" leaving a big whole at the top of the tank once the injection is removed?. Do you remove the EFI system from the top plate then screw the plate back on, then start the chemical process. I have purchased your kit and a new top plate. Just waiting on better instructions on how to proceed. Should I put the plate back on or use tape to cover the large whole? I also know that you have to protect the 12 screw hole threads that screw the top plate on and the threads of the quick release that is at the bottom of the tank and not a petcock. I'm sure there are a lot of Harley owners out there that are wondering the same things. Thank you for making a reasonably priced option to seal a tank but I really need to know is how to handle a tank other than the ones I keep seeing without EFI and the top plate
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us 9 месяцев назад
Yes, most would remove the EFI and then screw the plate back on. You can protect all screws and threads with petroleum jelly as the Tank Sealer will not adhere to a greased surface. Some people also tape heavy plastic over the hole (like painter's plastic), but the tape can leak at times depending on the strength of the adhesive of the tape. Does that help?

Use KBS Strip for the most effective removal of an old failed coating. Pour some KBS Strip into tank and carefully rotate tank to allow contact with all sides. It may take multiple applications of KBS Strip to finish the job completely. Old Sealer may come loose in big chunks or small pieces so use a long tweezers-type tool to help remove it from the tank. After stripping is complete, rinse tank generously with water and proceed with the KBS 3-Step System for Fuel Tank Preparation & Sealing. (NOTE: When stripping a Fiberglass Tank, surface contact with the stripping agent should be kept to a minimum to avoid the attack & weakening of the fiberglass resin.)

The reserve tank straw and tank sediment filter attached to the fuel tap on old Hondas fit directly inside that fuel outlet tube that you covered with tape. If that hole gets blocked by sealer then the straw and filter won't fit in there and if the sealer is too hard to drill then you've ruined your tank. I don't see how this method will not fill the outlet tube up or partially block it with sealer and cause problems when you try to screw the fuel tap back on. Do the instructions give advice on how to keep the outlet tube completely free of sealer? I've heard some people fill that tube with newspaper before they tape it. Those filters are a custom fit and if even a drop of the sealer blocks the hole then the filter will not fit.

Will this work with a carbon fibre fuel tank?
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us 6 лет назад
Yes, you can use the 3-Step Tank Sealing System on a carbon fiber tank. The procedure for sealing a Fiberglass Tank is the same except for a variance in Step #2 - RustBlast. For this type of tank, thoroughly wet the fiberglass surface for only 2 minutes using RustBlast. Drain and rinse well with water as directed. Because you are not prepping metal or dissolving rust, RustBlast may be saved and re-used for future use. RustBlast will, however, treat the fiberglass surface by giving it a more acidic pH level & by leaving a zinc phosphate coating ideal for Sealer adhesion. Also, it is important to make sure that the tank is completely dry inside before sealing. Drying is best accomplished by introducing forced air into the tank by using a shop vac, blow dryer, or fan. (NOTE: Drying is a critical step for sealing fiberglass tanks. Fiberglass tends to hold moisture and if the tank is not dried completely, the Sealer will not adhere properly.) IMPORTANT: It is also very critical to methodically coat the entire fiberglass tank completely & thoroughly with the Sealer. If any part of the fiberglass surface should accidentally be left exposed or unsealed, however, these unprotected areas will be very susceptible to deterioration by alcohol blended fuels and it is therefore highly recommended that these fuels not be used in fiberglass tanks even after sealing. After coating the tank, remember to drain well to avoid pooling and puddles.

After a thorough coating inside of tank, patiently DRAIN ALL EXCESS SEALER from tank until it no longer drips sealer. Additionally, to avoid puddling and pooling of excess sealer inside the tank, rotate the tank side to side every 5 minutes. This step is especially IMPORTANT if design of the tank makes complete draining difficult. This additional rotating of the tank will help minimize excess accumulation in any single area, and result in a slightly thicker coating on ALL walls inside the tank. Foaming and bubbling are signs of excessive Sealer accumulation and gas entrapment due to ineffective drainage.

Can this be used on a new tank and if so is it the same process?
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us Год назад
The KBS 3-Step Tank Sealer System is absolutely ideal for new tanks. If you leave a new tank uncoated, it will eventually rust leaving you with clogged fuel filters. A very common misconception with sealing new tanks is that you do not need the KBS Klean and RustBlast. New tanks made of new steel are very slick and not an ideal surface for Tank Sealer to stick, so we always recommend KBS Klean and RustBlast to properly clean and etch the surface of the new tank so the Tank Sealer can bite into the surface and adhere permanently.

Does it have to be dry before I use the rust remover?
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us Год назад
RustBlast needs to be used at full strength and not diluted. So, it is not necessary for the surface to be bone dry, but you do not want so much water still in the tank that the RustBlast gets diluted. Does that help?
@rodrigoelizarraraz5557
@rodrigoelizarraraz5557 Год назад
@@Kbscoatings-us yes definitely does, it did wonders but will need to do another pass since I accidentally left the tank outside over night and the condensation from the cold made it rust again. For the sealer it does need to be bone dry correct?
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us Год назад
@@rodrigoelizarraraz5557 Yes, before the Tank Sealer, the inside of the tank must be bone dry.

How do I keep from damaging the existing outer paint?
@Kbscoatings-us
@Kbscoatings-us 4 года назад
You can take some heavy plastic and tape it to the inside of the filler neck and then wrap it around the outside of the tank. Also, take your time and be careful. Most customers who seal up their tanks have a beautiful paint job on the exterior of the tank.

Yes, pinholes which are the size of the tip of a pin.

You can also get some mesh to use with the Tank Sealer to seal up the outside of the tank in those trouble areas.

Most people use pipe cleaner to keep their pet cock open and remove the pipe cleaners when the Tank Sealer has set up some but not completely. (2 hours is usually ideal).
