There's a faux experiment that gets described often in business books. In the description of the experiment, there are five monkeys in a room, with a ladder, and a banana is put on the top of the ladder. Whenever the monkeys try to climb the ladder, they are hosed down. It's then described that one of the monkeys is swapped out with a new monkey, and when the new monkey climbs the ladder the other monkeys forcibly stop him and rough him up. Each of the monkeys is subsequently swapped out so that eventually there are no original monkeys who have been hosed down. The monkeys still won't climb the ladder and still stop new monkeys from climbing it. There's usually a captioned picture or title saying, "That's just how things are done around here." Every time I hear Republicans going after the Clintons or President Obama I think of the story with the monkeys and how the new monkeys have no idea why they are doing what they do. In the '70s Richard Nixon got _caught_ breaking the law. It wasn't alleged. It wasn't insinuated. He got caught breaking the law red-handed. He behaved scandalously, and it was, rightly, a scandal. The next Republican President was Ronald Reagan, and he was caught, though it was never pursued to the point that it was tied to him directly, illegally selling arms. The Republicans have been trying to pin some scandal equivalent to Watergate and Iran-Contra on the Democrats since the '70s and '80s to get revenge, and we are now at the point where the Republicans don't even remember why they are going after the Democrats. It's just conditioned instinct at this point.
