Sean Lock Live (Early Performance circa 1992 - contains mucky words))

I have this on an old video tape. It still makes me laugh. It was filmed at The Town & Country Club around 1992. I do not hold the copyright and shall not be profiteering from this upload. No other copy seems to be on You Tube. If you know differently, let me know.
NOTE: This is a very early clip of Sean and this type of whimsical comedy was new. Harry Hill received the same crowd reaction when he appeared in another episode despite having a brilliant act. This video is for fans so keep any disparaging comments to yourself.

When you watch a comedian, laughter of the audience doesn’t always govern wether a comedian is good or not. Remember that in the early days Sean would have to play to many crowds to get established. Many of the crowds for early comedians tend not to be in to their comedy until they’re established and have a following, that’s why this set WOULD be widely and fondly received by those that admire his style of comedy today.

I didn’t think the crowd was that bad, it’s not like they didn’t laugh at all, some bits they were cracking up. The first bit was a bit cold but the mad cow impression got them going. It was interesting seeing him deal with it

Exactly you can have a whole crowd in who have no sense of humour atall, or just those in who like sick insulting comedy only. Like that boyle comedian but very serious with it. Not a fan. But every comedian has fans somewhere.lol. No matter what there material or style is. I was at a comedy gig in a pub and most of the pub crowd wasn't laughing at anything.well only me.lol. I really felt for the comedians.

Very true if a crowd don't know you or has never seen you before. straight away they are all going to be in impress me mode. Hehe, lol. When a comedian is so very established and well know everyone is just expected to laugh and you are the odd 1 out if you don't. Lol

People don't get it, at this point Sean was mostly surrounded by his peers. Grassroots comedy clubs are a tough ordeal, you don't get a huge crowd and not a lot of random people; often crowds are built up of other comedian's friends and families as well as your own. Combine that with being young and inexperienced it creates a tough atmosphere. Completely different to when you've had 30 years to hone your craft and have overcome all the personal challenges you encounter as you grow older.

You can see from this performance, although it wasnt that funny, how his mind worked. It wouldnt be long before he refined his act and would have me in absolute hysterics in the late 90's at the Ealing Comedy festival. RIP to such a unique comic brain. Will be sadly missed long after his death.

Yep, I don't understand all the other arse licking comments here saying how funny he was back then. No he wasn't. Like all comedians, he was damn average while learning the art. But yes, you can see the parallels of how his mind worked and all the wild and wonderful things going on in it. Years later, he had perfected the art of comedy.

I’d say it was mixed, IMO he definitely wasn’t unfunny. some bits I thought were hilarious, others pretty bad. I agree it’s interesting seeing how his Mind worked, u could see he was trying to adjust his act .

@@dadthelad I need to take issue with you there Keith, because - 'yes he was'. ..! I first saw him live prior to this in about 89/90 at the Red Rose club in London and he was hilarious. His opening line was; 'you know when you're out killing cows with hammers?' I've loved him ever since. The one thing he wasn't was 'average',.. ever. He was unique.

First time I saw him was when he was on stage with Newman and Baddiel at their farewell gig at Wembley Arena in December 1993. I really didn't get him at all but last year he became one of my favourite comedians, ever. Such a sad loss to the world of comedy.

I absolutely adored Sean, i was literally watching Purple Van man the day before he died. His impact on our lives was biblical, I'm just wanting to bask in all his glorious career videos and that's exactly what I'm doing ❤️ the last celebrity who's death hurt my heart like this was Rik Mayall. We miss you Sean and I'm thankful to have existed alongside him

Some really good pearlers here! Hidden in a deadpan sarcasm that he built on and improved over the years. James Acaster seems to have a very similar vibe now, and that's no bad thing!

Such a hard hard thing to even start doing. I think that's why it transpires that any survivors, also happen to be the most emotionally sensitive & highly intelligent, empathetic, kind and courageous, authentic people on the planet. I've only ever paid to see an affirmed 'made it comedian', comedy clubs aren't big in little nz. Apart from I think Auckland?, and that's NOTHING on the scale of the UK, and the occasional touring gig. But you watch this and you are reminded of all sorts about audiences and people at large. Snobbery, scathing non appreciation for what that person up on stage is going through, the sheer almost insane bravery of it!!! There is no glory. It's hard slog with no promises and you are completely on your own. I take my hat off. Some of the (rare) most honest earners around. He showed early promise for sure! I love the ways their minds work, it's certainly often different and very quick witted and bright as f**k.
