The Lord said this about attachment to wealth: "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." This strange comparison has been discussed endlessly for centuries. Why did Christ say it and what does it mean?

I've heard that one of the gates in Jerusalem was called "The Eye of the Needle". It was very small and a camel could only pass with great difficulty, and certainly without its rider or pack. Perhaps Jesus used this to demonstrate that the rich man, burdened with all his possessions and luxuries, couldn't enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he unburdened himself of his earthly possessions and his attachment to them.

The hole in the wall thing has been debunked already. Religion for Breakfast has a good video on it you should watch

@@Madlands69 I'm not sure of that or that it can be debunked convincingly. There are a few apertures which could have been gates that were blocked up by later construction. I doubt archeology could make a conclusive argument one way or another. The problem with archeology is though it tells the story of what was left behind, it can never tell the story of what has disappeared due to deconstruction or obliteration. An example is the Arc of the Covenant. Just because it was never found doesn't mean it never existed. Same for Noah's Ark which probably disappeared due to souvenir hunters making pilgrimages and taking relics home with them. Be cautious with any documentary you watch. They will show you evidence that supports their position, and avoid showing you that which pokes holes in their theory or is problematic for them. In other words don't just accept what a video tells you until you have done the research yourself. It's one of the important reasons I don't completely discount rumors and legends of the past. There is probably a reason behind those rumors and legends. A word to the wise.

@@stevelenores5637 it's not archeology. It's the fact that nobody refers to a gate or hole in the wall of Jerusalem as a " Needle hole" until centuries after the gospels and even then it's in reference to this specific verse. There's also nothing in the Bible itself that backs up this claim of it being a hole in the wall. Jesus probably means exactly what it sounds like. That rich people don't get eternal life. That could be backed up very easily with other synoptic Gospel verses, however, many Christians do not want to admit that he said this. Because they don't want to give all their money to the poor as Jesus and JB commanded. so they make up stuff like this "hole in the wall" theory

@@Madlands69 Well Jesus doesn't say that rich people don't get eternal life - just that it is extremely hard for one to do so. And being rich is subjective as it gets. Becoming rich doesn't just happen. You must be intentional about to "become" rich. Or you are born into it and that has a host of issues people are more familiar with. Wealthy people across the ages, Constantine for example, have helped the Church in immense ways and had been extremely wealthy for the time. The problem is those born into it typically can't bring themselves to fast, pray and give alms because they love the food, entertainment and possessions more than they love the idea of serving the Lord or storing up treasures for one's self in the Kingdom of God rather than their worldly treasures. It is hard to train this out of people who spent the time and effort to get rich, or who were born into it. Christ commands one deny themselves to follow Him. You can see why that can be hard for some!
