Searching for BIG Smallmouth Bass on The Great Miami River (Crazy Day!)

It's no secret that the Great Miami River is a fantastic smallmouth fishery in Ohio. The weather has finally broken and we are starting to see consistent warm days and smallmouth spawning activity. I take my buddy Chris out for some smallmouth action on this bank fishing trip! Little did he know he would tangle with one of the biggest smallmouth bass he has ever caught in Ohio! I love this river and cannot wait for the topwater bite to get here! Enjoy the action and stay safe everyone!

Dams typically are stacked up with all the oxygen and water movement! Bait gets trapped and has no place to go!

My advice is to grab your shoes and start walking the banks. you will find some great fishing spots

@thecreekcrawler thanks i mostly do that anyways. Was just curious which one was in the video. It looked very familiar. Live very close to one of the dams and try it often but have 0 luck. It's a me thing I feel like. Always unsure what to use. I usually hit an inlet area from a creek and where there's eddies and just overall much calmer water. But always 0 luck at the dam itself.

I read an article recently, I live in the city that dam is in, they’re tearing it down in a couple years. It hurts me but it’ll be good for the river.

Those dams are being taken out as well? I have not heard of this yet. Although the dams produce great fish, I’ll be happy to see them gone. It’ll be good for the river.

I typically throw 10lb braid to 10lb flouro on spinning gear. I have my casting setup spooled with 12lb flouro

how safe would you say it is to fish from a kayak in that area? It looks pretty rough, I assume it's always like that?? im trying to find an area on the great miami and little miami that is low flow and easier to kayak fish in.

There are a handful of access ramps along the GMR and LMR. I would not recommend getting close to the dams. They can be very dangerous.

Man I gotta say you’ve really motivated me to get out. Went to Hebron a few weeks ago and got some leech’s and hellgramites. Caught my first smallmouth yesterday in the north fork licking river that runs through my town in Utica. You should check out the kokosing river in Howard ohio. I’m gonna try to head there tomorrow. Supposed to be really good.

Hey CC, I've been watching your channel for a few weeks now. You do make it look easy to which I know it's not as easy as it looks. It's about knowing the water, the bait and the fish. To that end I'm a 50+ guy that has gone fishing a handful of times. With that in mind, what baitcaster would you recommend that won't break the bank but isn't a piece of crap?

Your exactly right Frank. Knowing the environment from a microscopic level and understanding the food web is extremely important! So as for bait casters I’ve been using them for a bit over a month now and started with Daiwa. The Tatula 100 HSL 7.1/1 has been perfect for me and it’s not gonna break the bank. I think it starts somewhere around the $150 mark but if you use my code on Vance outdoors website you can save %15 off! If you want to spend a bit more the same reel in the elite model is a bit lighter and you can definitely feel a difference.

I always get pumped walking the banks of the GMR!! You really never know when those 18” plus smallies are gonna smack your lure!! If you get the chance just look for any dams on that river and you will find fish!

It could be possible!! Those floods can really put a hurting in the spawning activity. I did find a bunch on beds and got some sweet footage. That video will be out soon
