“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” - Abraham Lincoln, First Inaugural Address, March of 1861 It is not wrong to fight for your home against invaders; and that entity which was founded through rebellion by slave owners like Washington and Jefferson as well as tolerating slavery in the slave states that remained in the Union (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware) has no standing from which to judge the Confederacy. This was a time when the United Sates was still referred to as these United States. It was understood as a political union of sovereign states. Many had never even left their home state in their lifetimes. Our ancestors would have never agreed to enter this union if they knew it was a death pact from which they could never leave. “A political union can only exist, between independent political entities. Such was the Union constituted by the Constitution of the United States, “between the States” but this Union - a Union of independent political entities - a Union of free will and choice - is gone; and the connexion now existing themselves what were formerly States, is no Union at all; but is the operation of the different parts of a consolidated power, held together by fear and force.” - Robert Barnwell Rhett If there was a left wing secessionist movement a majority of liberals would probably support it. In a recent poll nearly half of California democrats support their state seceding even with a liberal president in office, one can safely assume that number will rise if a Republican, especially Trump, gets back in office. If a leftist state voted to leave most liberals would consider it legitimate regardless if other states approved of its secession. Any attempt to force them to stay or occupy military installations on their land would be viewed by them as an act of imperialism and a betrayal to the US’s supposed democratic values. And they would be correct. "The principle, on which the war was waged by the North, was simply this: that men may rightfully be compelled to submit to, and support, a government that they do not want; and that resistance, on their part, makes them traitors and criminals. No principle, that is possible to be named, can be more self-evidently false than this; or more self-evidently fatal to all political freedom. Yet it triumphed in the field, and now is assumed to be established. If it be really established, the number of slaves, instead of having been diminished by the war, has been greatly increased; for a man, thus subjected to a government that he does not want, is a slave. And there is no difference, in principle -but only in degree-between political and chattel slavery. The former, no less than the latter, denies a man's ownership of himself and the products of his labor; and asserts that other men may own him, and dispose of him and his property, for their uses, at their pleasure. Previous to the war, there were some grounds for saying that -in theory, at least if not in practice-our government was a free one; that it rested on consent. But nothing of that kind can be said now, if the principle on which the war was carried on by the North is irrevocably established." - Lysander Spooner, northern abolitionist A union that claims to rest on the democratic will of the people cannot legitimately force them to stay when they have democratically elected to leave that union. After the Civil War any claim that the US is a voluntary union that rules through the consent of the people is utterly hollow.

It was the Southerns seceded from the Union illegal and attack Federal armories and warehouses and arsenals and etc. Then the Southern States fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 am, the south were the aggressors. There were a few hundred openly black Confederate soldiers (in 1865), but there were way more black sailors than there were soldiers, and there were more black militiamen than sailors (in 1861), there were more Army civilian musicians and cooks than militiamen, and there were WAY more free and enslaved black contractors working as teamsters, ambulance drivers, and laborers for the engineers, and there were A TON more camp slaves working as body servants than teamsters and ambulance drivers. A lot of black men saw battle and were incredibly resilient. This all makes them look so much better, like persevering underdogs, while it makes the Confederacy as a whole look way worse.

This is not history; this is political debate masquerading as history. A 'myth' means it didn't happen, not that it happened infrequently or that when it happened on a larger scale there were other influencing factors (e.g. loyalty, promise of freedom, etc.). Of course, it would hurt book sales and score less points with leftist social circles if he used the title, "Black Confederates - less common than some argue and frequently under mitigating influences." Hint: if your book title is an outright lie, everything else you write is highly suspect. Zealots like Levin are trashing history with their ideologically fueled garbage, denying readers and students the ability to learn history. In short, he's no different than Stalin's apparatchiks airbrushing photos to delete people from history. This museum should be ashamed to have given him a podium.

The point of Levin’s book is that there were not officially enrolled black confederate combat troops who served in battle and that it’s a distortion of history to portray camp slaves which is what they were called at the time as if they were regarded as soldiers at the time in the confederate army. He proves this point. You’re the one still trying to distort history
@TXGRunner
@TXGRunner 2 года назад
@@walterbailey2950 talk about tenuous legalities -- "not officially enrolled," they don't count because they didn't fill out the 2940/2 form and it wasn't signed by the third sergeant? Not combat troops - so, accordingly to you, if one wasn't a combat soldier, they don't count? Do you only apply that definition to blacks in the South, or do all the blacks killed in subs and on ships in WW2 not count either because they were only mess stewards? Or maybe you're just singling out blacks for this special redefining of what it means to be a soldier - do soldiers of other races and ethnic backgrounds not count because they were cooks, radio operators, medics, or in one of hundreds of other non-combat roles? Sounds kind of racist of you. I'd suggest you make your argument about only combat troops being real soldiers to the unarmed medics who received the MOH, but they all died doing their duty, even though they weren't combat troops.
@walterbailey2950

@@TXGRunner It’s not a tenuous legality if someone is explicitly stating a falsehood that they were considered combat troops when they officially were barred by law from serving in that role. It’s not a tenuous legality to point out that the original writings from the time where their masters and other white soldiers referred only to these people as slaves or, after the war, as former slaves, When someone states falsely and without evidence that those same people actually called them soldiers at the time. It’s simply calling you on a lie.

I am sorry, Kevin, but it is Silas Chandler who is seated on the right, with Andrew Chandler seated to the left. Now to be fair, it could be that you were viewing this arrangement from the perspective of Andrew Chandler himself, and if so, then indeed, Silas would be seated on HIS left.
