This is an introduction to a popular approach to evaluation. It turns traditional evaluation upside-down. Community and staff members are in charge of conducting their own self-evaluation. A “critical friend” or evaluation coach guides the approach to ensure it is honest and remains on track. The approach is described through the lens of the founder who introduced it to skeptical colleagues, some of whom zealously resisted it. It is now a part of the intellectual landscape of the field of evaluation. David M. Fetterman, Ph.D., is an expert in the field of evaluation
and founder of empowerment evaluation. He has worked at Stanford University for 25 years, and has facilitated a USAID-sponsored empowerment evaluation in India for tuberculosis elimination. Fetterman has also worked in over 17countries and with organizations such as Google and Hewlett-Packard. He has published 17 books. David M. Fetterman's contributions to the field of evaluation have been recognized by numerous awards, including the Paul Lazarsfeld Award for Outstanding Contributions to Evaluation Theory and the Myrdal Award for Cumulative Contributions to Evaluation Practice.
