67 year old Australian man here. A friend introduced me to Rodriguez in the mid 1970s after he was introduced to Cold Fact (the album) by fellow students from the Hawksbury Agricultural College Sydney. The album has stayed with me ever since.

I am absolutely in love with Rodriguez, the same as you! I only recently learned of him and I am 31 years old ❤️ I tell everyone who I know will appreciate this and him! I am so grateful and happy to have found him and this documentary 🥰❤️

Well done, it's never too late! I'm 65 in April, i've lived in London for years now tho am originally from Sydney. I was introed to Rodriguez, Cold Fact, in the 70's. I listen to his music as much now as i did back in the day. Beautiful music, beautiful man. Enjoy!

Way more, Tupac or Elvis don't even come close. As a South African, I still remember the shock when I heard he was alive. This was before I saw the film. I was just like "nope, not possible". You have to understand that he was a legend (and a mystery) for many many years. He "died" before there was even TV in South Africa.

it's impossible to sensor music as it can have so many meanings for so many people on different levels at the same time, he is good isn't he, or he was good/great growing up SA must have been different, I supported the anti apartheid movement here in the UK attending some huge rallies/marches, I used to wonder did the people of SA know the amount of support they had outside the country right across the globe, I must say I'm disappointed how the country turned out, same old problem, some people don't want to be happy, they chose chaos and disorder when they've known nothing else,

Rodriguez had gained a strong foothold in Australia - a phenomenon that was mirrored in South Africa's apartheid a little later. In all with 4 LPs published by Blue Goose in Australia. In 1979 when his hidden fame was finally revealed to him, he was invited to tour Australia and, to his great surprise, he played to packed houses in 979 and 1981. As he told ABC Radio 702 Breakfast this week: "Australia was the first one to pick me up ... I came and I did fifteen shows." "Australia was the highpoint in my career," he said. "We did the Regent Theatre (Sydney), a 2,000-seater." "We sold out four nights and it was half full for the fifth ... and that was my first time in Sydney." The 'Rodriquez Alive' LP was put out. He was never 'lost'. He simply gave up on the music industry and went to university to do a business degree and got involved in local politics.[14] Because of this omission some critics have called the documentary "myth-making".[15][16] However, the film focuses on his mysterious reputation in South Africa and the attempts of music historians there to track him down in the mid-1990s. South Africans were unaware of his Australian success due to the harsh censorship enacted by the apartheid regime until the 1990s[17] coupled with international sanctions that made any communication with the outside world on the subject of banned artists virtually impossible. Nevertheless, by the time of the making of the movie, Rodriquez's Australian story was well known by fans in South Africa with pictures of the cover of the 'Rodriquez Alive' cassette featured on the Sugarman website, two decades after apartheid ceased to exist.[18]

No you missed my point. Rodriguez was never lost. He toured Australia twice and recorded a live album. The basic premise of the film is dishonest.

The story was never really, first hand, about Rodriguez though, it was about the South African people. It was their search for Sugar Man. So I would not say that the basic premise of the film is dishonest, you misunderstood the perspective of the film.

Struggling to understand why knowing he's alive is a bad thing. This isn't an action drama flick -- it's real life. You should be watching it to learn about the man, not for the sensation and excitement.

​@@leavingitblank9363because the documentary is aimed at those new to his story. The first half sticks with the legend that he was dead after commiting suicide on stage. Just like South Africans were lead to believe for 20+ years. It's trying to place you in their shoes so you get a sense of the mystery surrounding him and his music and just a fraction of the amazement people must have felt to discover he was still alive and still able to play and sing his music for people.
