Learn to paint a seascape watercolor painting with watercolor artist Alan James and his "Let It Flow with Watercolor" series. Featuring art techniques, painting demonstration and tutorial for beginners or artists of all ages and skills by Colour in Your Life featured artist Alan James.
Based at picturesque Saybrook Point, Old Saybrook; Connecticut, discover Alan's techniques for creating first, second and third washes "en plein air" for a 90% complete watercolor painting. Learn brush technique for loose strokes and soft edges, including wet-in-wet techniques, and concepts to encourage creation of shadows, contrast and depth with juicy darks. As Alan tells his students, "don't be afraid of the dark!".
Learn some tips for fixing errors on the go, and generally learn how to "get loose" with your watercolor painting!
Alan uses the following materials in his practice (from Alan):
"Paints: At least three primary colors and earth colors of professional quality. Examples: Light Red, or Cadmium Red and Cadmium Yellow.
French Ultra Marine, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Red, Light Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Cad Yellow Light, Yellow Ocher , French Ultramarine
.
Palette: A light, portable palette is recommended.
Brushes: any type or brand designed for watercolor with good snap and point. I use Kolinsky sable and synthetic rounds (small to large), natural or synthetic mop brushes (small to large), a thin liner or rigger for small details.
Paper: rough or cold-pressed; 140Lb (300gm) or heavier; professional quality. My favorite is Arches. Paper Size: 11”x 15” is the most practical in my workshop/classes
Drawing board, gatorboard, foam core or anything that supports paper.
Masking tape, clips, or staplers to secure paper to the board
Pencil (2B, 4B or 6B)
Eraser: I like a kneaded eraser.
Sketchbook or drawing pad for sketches (optional)
A container for washing brushes (Yogurt container, Tomato can etc.)
Paper towels, for cleaning brushes
Household sponge for controlling water absorption
Lightweight easel for en plein-air painting. (Not necessary, as we will be indoors for this class)
If you’re considering a new easel purchase anyway, here’s what I use for both indoors and outdoors: sun-eden.com/"
In this piece Alan uses:
Saunders paper block
Escoda and Davinci watercolor brushes
Windsor and Newton Watercolors
Cerulean Blue
Light Red
Cadmium Red
Burnt Sienna
French Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Crimson Red
Payne's Grey

Great painting, and really good teaching. I like what he said about getting over the fear of putting in dark paint and having to just go for it. Great stuff 👍

lovely work! May I know the brand of the mop brush and the other one used. thanks
@alanjamesband
@alanjamesband 4 года назад
Hi Rodney. The mop brush I used in this video is made by Neef. It is an Alavaro Castagnet Signature brush and the other is an Escoda Perla. I have recently switched to #6 and #10 Davinci squirrel for my mop brushes and #'s 6, 8, 10 and 12 Escoda Reserva (Kolinski Red Sable) pointed round brushes for everything else.

Great to watch! Unfortunately sound is garbled at times. Perhaps a post-edit with voice over would help?

You forgot the reflections of the buildings, as everything else was include I assume you completed the work back in the studio . lovely subject .

Good eye Terence! As usual, I never complete a painting on site. I usually work it to about 80% to 90% and then finish the painting in the studio with fresh eyes. Happy Painting!
