Cliff and Clair have their hands full with Vanessa, after the rebellious teenager ignores their order not to wear make-up - and comes home from school with the evidence all over her face.
It got worse when she got drunk with her friends and Denise had to bring her home and again when Vanessa took off with her friends to see The Wretched in concert in Baltimore behind her parents back. AND again when she got engaged to Dabnis and didn't tell her family.
+Wiremu Winiata Not a good idea. If you noticed in Season 6 episode 5 Vanessa defended Theo to them on his dyslexia. Season 6 episode 3 Theo defended Vanessa concerning the drinking and too much pressure. Hinted about the not talking to her about that. Season 7 episode 3 or 4, Denise, Theo, Vanessa and Rudy teamed up and got on them about they do to them too. Also Cliff tall tailed stories. Clair ended up siding with the children. Clair is a hypocrite the way she bend over backwards for Sondra and inferior to Theo until his dyslexia and not giving Vanessa recognition and she gets good grades. Also she had some trouble, but she learned her lesson like Sondra. Sondra had some trouble too but Clair was hardly harsh at all with her. Denise had to use some trump cards to make her point.
"And threw you down on the floor, and put makeup all over your face, and said 'We don't care what your mother said you're gonna wear this makeup.'" LMAO XD
"Vaneeesa, are you wearing makeup?". "Now Vanessa you know you are nOt SuPpOsEd tO wEaR mAkEuP" as a brother I can honestly say... No moment is so satisfying as these moments 😂🤣😂🤣
I swear every time Vanessa gets in trouble, her main line after getting caught is, "Im sorry, I'll never do it again." And they said Denise was the rebellious sibling.
My conclusion is Denise was just sneaky nothing crazy. Theo and Vanessa got into most trouble though some of Theos issues where from his parents not recognizing his dyslexia.
I think nearly every girl has this issue around 13 or so. It's so ironic that girls are so anxious to wear it and then when we grow up, it becomes such a hassle that we don't even touch it lol.
@@sheena9p90 Back when I was in preschool and kindergarten our naptimes were always after lunch. I never would fall asleep; I was never tired. Now as an adult, I get sleepy in the afternoons; I think it finally caught up with me! If I can go back in time, I would tell the preschooler/kindergarten me to take a nap in the afternoons; take advantage of this! Or else, you'll be tired as an adult!
@@sheena9p90 Humans want what they can’t have. The forbidden fruit complex is a big deal in our brains. Once something is no longer forbidden and is available in abundance, you get tired of it.
This was one of my favorite epsodes-I love how Claire put her behind in check-loved Claire-strong-takes no BS-but still shows the kids lots of love. I want to be a mother like that.
The Vanessa or Theo getting into trouble episodes were some of the best ones. It was one of them that stayed getting scolded for doing something stupid. Think about how many shows centered around those two. By the way, my mother wouldn't let me wear makeup until I was 16. It was a big deal in the 80's. I miss this show.
I was never allowed to wear makeup. 😂 I think I stopped begging to wear makeup in 4th grade. I was 10 years old. One of the girls in my class did put the makeup on me. Mother saw my face and went totally apeshit over it. Went to the school and had a conference with the teacher. That was the end of that…..🤣
I think she auditioned for Sondra but Sabrina's theater background help even though she wasn't that much younger than Phylicia. Oh well Whitney had to settle for becoming a music legend!!! R.I.P. Nippy 🙌
the acting in this scene is so good!!! when Vanessa said "I'm so sorry mom"and Claire's "I know I know" was so natural the actions and reactions was so smooth you knew Vanessa really felt bad for disrespecting her mom, and Clair like a great mom understood that an wholeheartedly forgive and then gently hit her with her punishment
....I love how COSBY acknowledges WHITNEY HOUSTON's "presence" in the Episode with the Poster of her on Vanessa's bedroom wall (3:31) ....She actually was to audition as 'Denise', until she got her record deal for her debut Album, and bowed out... only to become a MEGASUCCESS in 1985
Claire was pregnant in this tapping. They said they used the clothes and the clothes basket to hide her belly, and made sure she sat and stood a certain way.
Claire knew something was up. She was right on the other side of the door, so I bet she heard the convo! Vanessa running off suspiciously didn't help either.
And Theo also purposely dropped Claire's"Waterproof," watch in a sink full of water to test how waterproof it was. It got ruined and Claire was understandably pissed Theo was also 13 when he did that stunt. 🙄 You'd think at 13 he'd know better than to pull the waterproof watch test stunt. It would have been VERY understandable if he was only like 8 and did that.
I got popped in my mouth for doing the same thing when I was 14! Forgot to wipe the lipstick off my damn lips. Mom called me over to her and popped me right in my mouth. lol
Honestly if mom’s don’t want their girls wearing makeup, they need to not wear makeup either. They are subtextually telling their daughter the same thing their friends and the makeup industry are: that their daughter needs makeup. If you don’t want your daughter wearing makeup, lead by example. (Or maybe just maybe compromise. Let her cover up her acne with skin tone concealer. A little bit of freedom will do her so much good and she’ll be less likely to fight you on makeup.)
Lol I was 13 when I started wearing makeup and my mom didn't care. It's just makeup, if it's just light stuff I don't see a problem but she still did a wrong thing by defying her mom
What year was it when you were 13? This was was 1986. So it might have been acceptable during at your age depending on the year and how your mother felt about makeup.
Mo To I was not allowed to wear makeup or date until I was 16 and I was only allowed to wear soft neutral colors, no dark reds or black. I thought my mom was overly strict compared to all my friends mother's who allowed them to wear makeup and date when they were 13 and some 12 years of age. It wasn't until I became an adult that I understand the reasoning behind it without my mother explaining it to me. By the way most of my friends that were allowed to wear makeup and date at very young age ended up becoming teenage mom's. Enough said. Thank you mother.
Mo To No that's were your wrong. Dating at 16 is a conservative age, I was already a junior in highschool with good grades. And no I never made her a grandmother until my late 30s. So you're wrong.
Mo To You don't know that because you don't know all of the teenage woman of the work that dated at 16, so you truly can't say that. However, every circumstance is different and it all depends on how involved a parent is with their teen. It's about good parenting and good parenting is not allowing your teenage to do whatever they please and it also means not being overbearing. You can't raise your child in a bubble and expect them to come out perfect. That'll will blow up any any parent's face.
There's usually a reason why parents make rules. In this case it's because a 13 year old girl needs makeup about as much as a 5 month old needs an iPhone. It's also about the principle: obeying your parents because they know what's best for you. After all, they've been around a while longer than we have, and have learned valuable lessons and have gained invaluable wisdom. Just food for thought. :)
I know it's an old comment, but wanted to explain. If you're talking about Rudy wearing lipstick when she was trying to go to the Exchange club. Claire handled them the same way. When she found out Vanessa was wearing make-up, she told her no makeup until she was 15. That was it. The grounding happened after Vanessa deliberately chose to wear makeup the next day -being hardheaded. When Rudy wore the lipstick, Cliff & Claire made her wipe it off. No makeup for her either. But she went behind their backs again, wore makeup & went to a club. Then their punishment for her was more creative. lol
You know the funny thing is that at 13 I was kind of a tomboy, and had no real desire to wear makeup, and my mom really wanted me to wear it, to be more feminine. The grass is always greener I guess...
These make up stories in sitcoms always surprise me. My mom encouraged me to wear make up at 13. Back then, I wore foundation, powder and mascara. I don't see why some mothers are so strict about it.
I'm not fully prejudiced against parents with strict personalities; just some lame fictional ones. Unfortunately, Clair and Bill Huxtable (mostly Clair) would fail to be my most hated. Just like Danny Tanner (a "Full House" character). No wonder. EDIT: Tell me it's about sides.
I think the issue was that Clair found some make up that Vanessa had in her purse (well, Rudy found it and gave Cliff an impromptu makeover). Clair made it clear that Vanessa is not to wear any makeup until she is 15. Vanessa disobeyed and put makeup on at school and that's why Clair is mad.
When someone asks me about my favorite scenes, I'll usually start with Theo and the earring...then I'll mention the Denise and Vanessa fight scene when they "took Cliff out!" But Vanessa...when she went to Baltimore to see the Wretched...and Claire lit into her...I think that one tops all of them! Vanessa was truly special!
A lot of people think that Denise was the problem child, and while she did turn out pretty useless when she decided to drop out of college, Vanessa just kept getting into trouble and I think gave them the most trouble in terms of just outright disobeying their rules and not using good judgement.
No the worst ones were when she lied to be with Jeremy and then she got drunk with her "friends" and then the big kahuna, she lied to go to Baltimore for big fun and when her friend's brother's car got stolen they didn't report it to the police (it's almost as if they were saying "his car his problem boo hoo") and boy she got it!!!
Vanessa didn't always make the best decisions lol. First the whole Jeremy debacle, and then the sneaking off to Baltimore. And almost getting married her first year away from home smh.
After reading a few comments...ALL i know is if some of y'all had said those comments in the house I grew up in, y'all wouldn't be here today commenting. Y'all must be YOUNG to be talking like that. Nobody over the age of 30 would DARE say some of the things you suggest Vanessa should've said to Clair. #YallBeKissingtheFloor
Damn straight! I wish I would have fixed my mouth to say some of the things these young folks say to their moms today. Even today I wouldn't say those things.
I bet you today, makeup would be the least of their worries with girls getting tattoos, piercings other then their ears, thongs... These events make makeup seem harmless now. I miss this show, the parenting they portrayed is something I wish was still around today, but parents today give in to everything their kids want, it's not wonder why they are super disrespectful not only to their parents, but to their teachers...
Uh, this is show was quite sanitized (per Cosby's wishes), so, of course, they weren't going to show the Huxtable kids doing outrageous things like getting tattoos and piercings, though I guarantee you that many teens in the '80s did just that. However, tattoos and body/facial piercings were more underground then, thus more rebellious. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, it's annoying when people think that a certain family show from a distant era was representative of all the real-life families at the time. But Cosby had a mission to make his TV family as wholesome and positive as possible. Hence, why he nixed the pregnant Denise storyline on the spin-off A DIFFERENT WORLD (which followed Denise at Hillman College). Lisa bonet had gotten pregnant with Lenny Kravitz' baby (Zoe) after the first season of A DIFFERENT WORLD, and producer Debbie Allen (Phylicia Rashad's sister) wanted to do a storyline involving Denise getting pregnant and keeping it, but Cosby didn't want Denise portrayed as a single mother with an out of wedlock kid, so he fired her from A DIFFERENT WORLD and brought her back to THE COSBY SHOW (for the 5th season) and after a few episodes sent the character off to Africa for the remainder of the season, while Bonet got noticeably pregnant and had her baby. In another episode, Vanessa and her two friends want to form an all-girl group, and they are described as being dressed provocatively, but they're pretty covered up in leotard, bodysuits, and leggings. Of course, if it was true to real life, we would've seen Vanessa et al. in skimpier, revealing clothing, but, once again, Cosby would not allow his underage, female co-stars to dress in such a way, so they had to be covered up. It's frustrating when people today watch that episode and assume that that was considered risque in the '80s, but in fact it was pretty tame for the times, too. I mean, watch 1980s beach movies and you'll see women/girls in skimpy, string bikinis that left little to the imagination.
This was and still is a great show. This is also a teachable moment. Have you noticed that Claire said she bent through this with all of her children at the age of 13? So she know that her children will go through things. They just try to cut it off before it happens and when it happens, they deal with it right away. This is also something that parents can learn from when dealing with their children. no beating was involved to correct Vanessa and there was no abusive language involved also to correct Vanessa. A teachable moment especially because they know about peer pressure. And that’s why Dr. Huxtable said what he said to Vanessa. So there’s no excuse for peer pressure. Teachable moment
This show teached people values and was really funny. Unlike nowadays shows teaching children to disrespect parents and parents to be weak in front of their children. The word is definitely falling apart
