As we dig a little deeper into this common story, we find a subtle paradox. I've been told many times during my 7 year relationship with a Nth Thai lady that few local women trusted their Thai husbands due to regular philandering. A 'kind farang' would seem like a much better option and much easier to screw over! Once again, we have some big red flags here. There is not a snow ball chance in hell that I would invest in a house or condo that's in a Thai person name. No matter how much I trust them. Trust is as fickle as the mob itself. Could the same have happened in Vietnam or any other country in the world? Bet your sweet home it could. I'm personally very grateful for diving head first into a Thai relationship. We had some fantastic moments travelling around the country and SEASIA. However, when your use by date is up, it's up. Another topic for conversation is; learning the language, learning how to communicate "like a local".

SOsme feel that way others as myself dont , I bought not one but two houses , sold one , yes I ll never own it but to me didnt matter . Everyone has there own feelings about this issue ... As far as learning Thai , that too is left to, if you want to or dont want to . I see many advantages to learning the language but Im also a realist I cam e here to retire not study ....

Trust and commitment is fine, but what you have to understand is things at the end of a relationship when its broken down aren't the same as when you are in love. You are now dealing with a person you don't know because you haven't up until now seen that side of them. The person you end a relationship with isn't the person you started it with. You have no reason to trust that person. Not only that both of your situations have now changed, one or both may not care what happens to the other and is now only concerned about their future.

I lived in a Thai farming village in a rural area for over 15 years and still go back regularly - I did have a car and ventured out whenever in the mood, visiting CM once maybe 2x a month. I integrated and assimilated with my Thai family, learned to speak Thai, made many many many Thai friends in our local city, and learned about daily life and sThai culture. I had great internet and was never bored. I enjoyed it and never found it a hardship. We had resources to go wherever we wanted, whenever. I loved it there.

Very unfortunate to hear another story of a farang being ripped of by his Asian gf or wife which is commonplace. Having lived abroad and have worked with many nationalities for nearly 40 years mainly Africa, Middle East and Asia one thing that always stood out with people from Asian countries is that money is their God and material wealth is paramount, exposing your wealth to an Asian woman is financial suicide. We are foreigners not blood relatives which places us at the bottom of their list of priorities.

I have been going to Thailand and the Philippines sense 2005, everything I learned about women ,I learned in Asia. In America you are a sugar daddy, in Asia, it's called a girlfriend experience. You have $ ,they have sex. Your trading $ for sex , it's not love , if you meet someone, that must bring something to the table of life , other than sex! I'm my many years over there ,I only lost a few dollars, by leading money ! I only had one relationship in Thailand. It was a waste of time, as this women thought ,if I gave him sex I can ask for $ and help! Only be with someone that can offer you something. That has a business, job, her own home etc. Property is the same every where, people that don't have to to benefit from others wealth. Never trust a working girl , at all, waste of time !

You’re in a country that’s not your country you are with a person that you don’t know very well and there’s a lot out there about is kind of problem in a relationship like this, financial problem’s You know the government of Thailand is not going to be backing a foreigner. They think you’re stupid they think that you’re using their women. They’re probably happy that she took as much as she could.

She probably discovered activity from him in Vietnam that she didn't like, I think. It is often alcohol, other ladies and the like that destroy relationships. $5-6000 isn't that much money and he'll probably get over it, the loss of the house and debts that have to be paid probably sting more.

Keep in mind that Thailand is a polygamic culture. Westerners normally comes from a monogamous culture. These are two different universes. And that’s not all about men f…ing around, but also a «power game» between women, making their markers towards other women about who has access to the man and to become/accept to be a minor wife towards a major wife, or not. Younger educated women often do not like to be a minor wife or that the man takes a minor wife. In this picture social security for the woman, by having a man fending for the women also comes in. These different aspects is what’s in their mind when the man is around and out of sight. A good relationship is about 100% honesty, trust and respect.

In your description, you mention that this can happen to anyone. I disagree. Why would any man build a home for a woman who was not his wife or mother? Why would any man give his banking information and access to a woman who was not his wife? This would only happen to a person who hasn't thought things through and is too trusting. Not buying a house for a girlfriend and not giving her access to your banking info is common sense.

Sorry but 99% have no clue how to live outside their own country. Seen these idiots and feel sorry for them. I’ve helped a few friends out with tickets back to the world. You can’t teach life lessons without knowing what you’re up against. Speaking some language is always better. It’s better to try and learn then just be an easy mark. Best of luck to all those who want to reach retirement goals in Asia. Pro tip keep your money safe in your home country banks. Only have access yourself. Transfer monthly to local country bank. Setting monthly budget goals is usually easy. Puntang is added extra per month..set budget goals for this also. You will find it’s not necessary to have one everyday. Find one especially attractive when you’re in the mood. Otherwise plan ahead. Good luck and bless your heart..❤

How does one conduct King Solomon's test of virtue? Men who rob the cradle need to understand that a young woman will eventually realize that she has been robbed. I had to bail a friend out for a couple years after his attempt with a woman 30 years his younger, after her own eyes were opened, and I never saw anything as ugly as their divorce, or a worse betrayal by a woman. Young women should be treated like daughters, and we should always recognize the desires of their heart, and how they long to fulfill their dreams, not defeat them as dirty old men they could never grow old with.

I travelled for two months in South Asia, with a cash card from a bank in China. I never go to little cash machines. I only get money out of big, edifice banks. In Cambodia I tried to take out $200 and I was refused. I tried at another bank and I was refused. I went to a third bank and tried for $100 with no luck. So I got an advance on my credit card. Then I went to Viet Nam, and all those attempts to withdraw cash had taken the cash from my account, plus $60 in bank charges.

I think she felt used to being able to live here comfortably but offered nothing, so she just have to get reimbursed, my guess. Or it could be his account was hacked the same mine was. There was a transaction showed up that was charged for a delivery membership service, which I did not do that. I notified the bank and voila!, 2 days later the charge was from the same source using my virtual card ( which I never established a virtual one). Luckily, I notified the bank on time, so the charge was denied and my card is closed. So, I have no card to withdraw my cash at the moment.

Obviously maybe more to the story that you dont know, if its around 5000 well it could be worse. Although if he put all his savings into a house thats likely gone. As you say its important to protect yourself, also have backup accounts overseas. If he still has a good pension he will be able to take the hit, dust himself off and hopefully find happiness.

We have little or no recourse and are programmed to be accepting of the abuse and treachery. A wise man in Thailand once advised me to trust no one. Sounds like it was a joint account to which she had legal access? Difficult to be in a relationship and not give access implying distrust. Huge risk he took and paid through the nose. Not much of a lesson here imo. It’s just about choices. A different girlfriend in the same shoes would not have been so harsh. One never knows. 🤷‍♂️

😂 when it came down to the amount of money his GF took out of his account, which I do assume it must have been a joint account, thus not really theft by rights, and with you saying first it was a lot, it turns out only 5k USD or something like that, damn man, I was thinking she screwed him out of multi-millions of baht or dollars not 5k. Yes, it is a lot if you do not have that much to live off, but that only equates to a couple or 3 months of USA pension or so. No wonder, it did not really bother him as much. But, yep, it happens all the time, she may've needed the money for a down payment on a condo if she left the home they built, who knows eh. However, in Thailand, the Thai's are ALWAYS the winners end of the day and the gov rulings make sure of that. Good luck for your friend's new life etc, but seeing he is gullible even knowing the ins and outs of the countries etc., once gullible always gullible like me hahha.

not only are the cultures different... the socio-economic levles are often very different... where in your home country, you can pretty easily and accurately determine the 'beckgrounds'... and thus the values, honesty, expectations of the women you meet and date in your home country... in a foreign country... it is very difficult identify/judge the backgroud of these women... and it becomes even more dificult to accurately determine/predict they will react to your behaviors/actions/statements... it seems often when people discuss 'culture differences' ... it is easy to get focused on the overt customs and behaviors... but there are a whole lot of socio-economic culture differences that are often at the root of culture difference problems/conflicts... just sayin...

Thats just plain being stupid. My account. My gf account and one incomein for housemoney. Food. Bills House etc. But .my savings are mine. Most of the commenters throw shade on the woman for taking the money and the man for naievety. But it was the man who said they were both unhappy and he had a sudden desire for Vietnam This was followed by her cleaning him out, a revenge move. My guess is he found someone in Vietnam, she found out and confronted him. He offered her something and she decided to sweeten the pot. It does not sound like he is going after her legally so....? Btw only $5-$6k? Not his 800k baht visa money?
