Today I start off late and make it down to Loggerhead Marina in St Petersburg for a SeaStar Optimus Steering Failure on a Regal SAV. I show you the process of diagnosing the issue and give a brief description of how the system works. Comment down below with any questions. Thanks for watching.

Hi I am having a similar issue with our optimus system on a 273 everglades. The EPS is saying 'Main station EST Gateway port lever position sensor failure' and use of the joystick is now suspended. We live in the Turks and Caicos so techs have little/no professional knowledge of these systems here. Our engine was also misaligned in the same manner as your video above.Thanks for posting this vid we will give you guys a call!

Thank you. It is really all I know. Going on 22 years of working on the same modern types of power boats. Now filming and editing is all new to me. This will take a while to master as well. Thanks for watching and I am always waiting for your videos😁

@@JustinLeeMarine yea, know what you mean. All this high tec computer 💻 stuff is not always easy to work with. Often I just replace the unit and move on😅. I think you’re great at this RU-vid thing and you’re really finding your vibe now. Im coming out with a new episode soon. Not as often as you, but I’m doing it! 💪🏼

I have the same system with twin Yam F300s on a 2014 Sea Hunt Gamefish 30. I bought the boat used last fall. In my case, I have been having an intermittent failure of the Port engine I THINK. It's happened 3 times and I am 99 percent certain it was always the port side. Each time I was able to "fix" the issue by pulling ALL the leads on the PCM and cleaning them off and adding a tiny bit of dielectric to the plugs. But this week when I was done, the STBD engine was acting up and I had intermittent steering on the STBD and NO steering on the PORT. Then the STBD quit and I have no steering. Limped home and put it on the trailer. The ONLY SeaStar tech in town is booked up for a full month. I think this system stinks and I think that putting the PCM and pumps in the bilge was idiotic. But I learned something watching your vid. Thank you. Now I know what the Circuit Breakers look like and how to swap the cables on the PCM to trick the system. So, I can do a bit of wrenching while waiting for the tech. Thanks again. I will search for the rest of your vids.

Stbd steering incorrect direction. Purge and calibration finished successfully.

I have a STBD steering redundant postion senser failure..... is this something I can fix myself?

Is there a way to test the steering cylinder sensor? Had the port alarm 3x this weekend. Saw some water leaking onto the PCM. Cleaned up the connections (round din plugs) and added a bit of dielectric grease. Problem recurred 7 hours into fishing. Pulled the port plug, reinstalled, it seemed to work (we stopped steering via the wheel and only used the autopilot (just in case the steering wheel input was causing issues, probably a silly idea on my part, but I noticed that it worked great until my buddy cranked the wheel).

Usually I just wiggle them and if it gives you an alarm then the sensor is bad. You can also swap the port and starboard ones and see if it follows the sensor. Then you know it's the sensor. I would start with the sensor as it's the cheapest piece. The PCU is big money if it fails.

Hi Justin, I appreciate your videos! I have a 2019 30' Cobia with twin Yams with the Optimus steering. My issue is intermittent. I'm getting a " Stbd Steering Pump Open Circuit" Error. I've been gettin it for the last year or so but has been very intermittent. But now it's happening more often. I have unplugged and re-plugged all connections on the PCM. Have you herd of this issue? if so, can tell me what I should look for? Thank you, Jim

Thank you and I would swap the main(power/ground plug) connections on the pumps. If it alarms on the port side then the pump is failing.

Good video thanks for posting. I'm deciding between a bow thruster and the optimus 360 for backing into a slip with wind and tide movement. Is one system better than the other for this purpose?

The Optimus gives you alot more control over the whole boat. The bow thruster only corrects the bow. I would choose Optimus personally.

Hi Justin, my optimus display panel is totally dead (all black). there is power coming in through the PCM but the lights are dead. The 2 Yamaha engines don't move at all. I have the same Regal SAV33 boat. Whats your opinion on it? >I don't have a joystick

@@mauriziodalessandro1858 that is hard to say without me putting my hands on it but my best guess is the module has failed. That is what controls everything including your gauge. The only thing you can check is if you have 12 volts to the purple wire. That is what wakes up the system.

I have a single outboard with the led blinking 3 red can I switch to the other output without changing the pcm?

I don't think that is possible but it won't hurt to try. If it's not working you won't hurt anything switching the leads. Let me know what you find 😊

Question about flushing Optimus Power Steering Pump? The cap came off of the pump and I had water in the bilge. Salt water filled the reservoir. What would be the best way to drain it, flush it and refill it. Is there a way I could purge nitrogen though the lines to flush the water out?

I would disconnect the lines and blow them out with air pressure. Then bleed the system with new fluid after you get everything you can out. Run the system a few times and do it all over again. The oil should absorb all the moisture so when you fill it and bleed it the second time you should be good.

Nice troubleshooting video helpful, but I’m having a problem where it would work then I would drive a little bit then lose steering for both engine. Any advice would help or anyone with the same problem

Bought a twin yamaha 300 30 seahunt. All seals leaking at rear arms. Replaced and refilled reservoirs. Starboard turns but not port. The seller screwed me. How do you bleed and fill optimus? Please help

They are self bleeding when the system is on. You will have to check and make sure both pumps turn on when you start the engines. If not then you will have to diagnose what is causing the pump not to work.

@JustinLeeMarine God bless you for your reply. I figured it out about 1hr ago. I had to swap plugs 🔌 on panel like you did. This caused both pumps to turn on. While on, at the port pump. There is small bleed valve. I opened and cycled steering wheel and ! Walaaaa fixed. Swapped plugs to the original position.

Hi. I have one of those sea star steering. I have several issues. Sometimes i loose steering and have to power down to get it back. When i engage the joystick to dis ingage i have to power down as well. What could be causing that issue?

It's almost always the sensors that are on the steering rams. If it's not that then it's the PCU.

Hi again. Where do you find parts for the system? My display went out and cannot find a replacement anywhere. I'm thinking of upgrading my system to Garmin can I do without the color display and work everything through 1 of the Garmin units?

If you call the marina in Clearwater and ask for Doug he can probably get it for you. You do need the display for the system to work. You could hide it in the dash because you can tie it into the NMEA and get the rudder angle and info from it.

I'm having an issue with how the Garmin steer by wire autopilot interfaces with the system. Keeps blowing the autopilot fuse. This is on a 3 engine Suzuki system. Any tips?

If it's blowing a fuse it could be the wiring or the pump is pulling too many amps. Would need to be tested.

@Justin Lee I figure I'd start by disconnecting all the connections in the system, then, from front to back begin reconnecting them one at a time until the 5a fuse pops again. I was thinking there might be an autopilot connection backbone near the optimus, but I don't see it. It's on a 2019 SeaVee 390. Wasn't sure if the autopilot connection went direct into the Optimus pcm either.

You are on the right path by disconnecting everything. I don't know about the backbone location unless I looked at a diagram. You can also call the manufacturer and they will help sometimes

@Justin Lee I found the issue. There was a wire bundle coming off the CAN2 connection that had a badly corroded splice. Going to snip the rest of the zip ties apart tomorrow from both CAN 2&3 and redo any additional splices. Also, there was alot of corrosion on the PCM power and ground cables.

Justin, I am in Sarasota and have no power to my Optimus system at all. Had a good amount of water in bilge due to maybe float in bilge pump not working. Repairman said pcm is corroded from water and at a minimum i need new pcm for 2300 and total will run 4200 now or more if there is other things they find? Sound reasonable and legit?

The part is expensive but I don't see how it's that much labor. It's a simple fix unless he is installing new power and grounds or running new harnesses should only be a couple hours labor if it's just the PCM

@@JustinLeeMarinethey now say the pcm is coming from the factory in Canada and could take weeks because of customs. Really want this working for March. Do you think if I call marinemax I’d have better luck? Should this part take weeks to get? I have a vantage 280.

I would try Marine Max for sure. They can see if any parts warehouse has them available. Might be in stock somewhere.

Have you ever seen this fault on the Optimus? 'PCM lost CAN2 communication with main station joystick' I checked every connection but it keeps coming back. At one point, it cleared, then returned every couple seconds, then stayed faulted. I left a message with Dometic tech support also. Fingers crossed.

If the harness is good then the PCM is bad.

@JustinLeeMarine Thanks Justin! The Dometic tech support was super helpful also. John sent over the schematics for the Can2. So now I'll have the pleasure of crawling upside down inside the bilge of the 39 SeaVee to cut 100 zipties and investigate the Can2 main harness at the PCM.

@@JustinLeeMarine Update. The CM 20304 harness looked okay(ish). It had a little corrosion on the CM10060 micro tee connections but the pins inside were clean. Ordered the new CM20304 as a precaution. Also, when looking at the PCM it has a repeating 5 flashes at the C1 LED indicator. Not sure if that means anything to you? The ED1700 display also shows fault code 0x7F220 and on the system health displays a Yellow caution on Main PCM. Wish you lived closer to Pompano Beach! Really appreciate your responses so far and your videos are super helpful also.

My cantrak display ok button (the one button you need to engage the p ) isn’t working. Display functions but can’t click the button all the way to the right. Emailed domestic 50 times and they won’t respond after the first email. Will never ever have this system in a boat. Never ever ever ever what a pos.
