The ultra competitiveness of Wright is seething right now, but this is a blessing in disguise. He can master his craft away from the blazing spotlights of Montreal and fully fulfill his projected talent - something that could have been derailed playing in the Montreal hothouse. Kraken have two absolute studs down the middle with Wright and Beniers.
It's only his ego talking. Like you said, it's probably a blessing. He'll have a better development away from the Montreal medias and the pressure that comes with it all.
@@PhillyLeotardo25 Laf has sort of been a bust so far. Which is shocking but also sort of not. in retrospect in now appears that Laf dominated the canadian league BECAUSE he was NHL ready in terms of his size (the kid was huge, just like Savflovsky, before even getting drafted-- 6'0 and 200lbs ). Which played a big role in his juniors success. But everyone thought the kid was gonna be a generational talent, bc he has been a stud since he was 12.
I know I'm really late, but Wright himself confirmed that he was in fact staring at the Habs table during a Seattle radio broadcast. Then he later liked a fan tweet that said Slaf is the worst 1st overall pick since Yakupov. But what really threw me off is the reason why he even fell to 4th. Its not because of the attitude, its because he didn't play overseas.
@@MrMultichris234 Yeah he did. He was asked basically about how he feels about being projected #1, and I don't remember his specific wording but he basically said that he expected that because he is the best player in the draft this year.
@@GodWeenSatan Exactly , I wanted him at first and was mad at Hugues for picking Slafkovsky but when he dropped to 4th overall it made me think that something happen behind close door that we don’t know of. I wish him a fantastic career in Seattle.
Don't they ask the players before hand? I could see why he wouldn't want to play in Seattle, it's obvious the team is headed nowhere anytime soon, and his star can only glow so bright here, nearly every star has left Seattle.. from Arod , Griffey, Payton, ichiro ,Wilson, the list is long.
At the end of the day, the higher you go the more unnecessary pressure is put on you, him dropping to four could make him THE steal of the draft, Seattle is very lucky that wright slipped to them, and he doesn’t have to deal with that Montreal pressure cooker, the kraken have a very bright future as far as centers go.
Fell in love with the kid thanks to his competitive edge but his pompous attitude really worried me. Good luck to him. He’s the type of guy to use this drop to be better, and he might be an elite player because of it. Because I like Arizona (yeah, yeah I know) I hope Copley’s better.
Stud. Big win for Seattle. As a Canucks fan, I'm not looking forward to going up against him. Seattle got a winner in this kid and it's going to look nuts in years to come that he dropped to fourth.
I like this storyline. I bet Wright will make it known every time he plays in MTL that they severely fked up... We will see! I can understand why Slafkovsky went 1st. I really really can. Does sting a little for Wright. If he was in the 2021 draft, there wouldn't have been a single question he was the 1st overall pick.
If I were Wright, obviously I’m trying to be the best player I can be. But I’m making it a goal of making MTL’s life a living hell. Jersey and Arizona for that matter too.
Problem is that he followed an exceptional 15 years old season with a disappointing 17 years one. Stagnation, or a slowdown in progression isn't what you want to see in a prospect. Those are important, formative years. His last season projects more as a 2C than a franchise player, and that's a real concern. He was easy to play against in the playoffs. That's an even bigger concern to some. And yet he's cocky and entitled. There are ways to say things. Saying that you worked hard to be number one and that you hope to be sounds a lot less entitled than "I deserve to be #1." Especially coming out of a disappointing year.
I guess Montreal didn't like Wright's arrogant-I deserve to be the no. 1- attitude either 😂 Hughes said that they liked Slafkovsky's humor and that he is not arrogant - probably suggesting that Wright was. Glad he fell down to the 4th place.
Honestly speaking he has a better chance of nailing down a #1 or #2 Center spot in Seattle than in MTL or NJD. Arizona obviously woulda had a spot for him but they took a shitter instead.
There is obviously a reason he went 4th. Arrogance or attitude issues? Or simply he's not as good as people are saying. If it were me I'm happy to not play for the team who just finished last. Going to Seattle is better than Arizona or NJ I argue.
I am about to say one thing about Wright that imo will hold back his production so just maybe he reads this and adheres to my advice. Obviously nobody has seen him on the ice versus NHL players but what i have noticed is that he does a lot of "tailing off"and by that i mean he takes a shot and tails off he makes a pass and tails away from the net he NEEDS to continue on to the net looking for rebounds instead of fading away from the net.I actually see a LOT of players do this and all you need to know is that Phil Esposito and Tim Kerr scored a ton of goals NOT with skating prowess all they did was stand around the net.IMO Wright is a solid player he can definitely handle net traffic and SHOULD be in the crease area a lot more looking for garbage or maybe even a loose puck to feed a nice pass off or to simply keep the shots coming and maybe something goes in or banks in off a defender you just never know.
You love childish, entitled brats? He couldn't make a difference in the OHL (wasn't even top scorer on his own team) and he's gonna stare down an NHL team because he thought he "deserved" to be number 1? When he has, by every metric, a disappointing year? Hope he learns from that nice dose of humble pie that he got served, otherwise, he'll be another Daigle/Yakupov, another player more in love with their own celebrity than hockey.
This is what happens when you over scrutinize. You start to see things you think are holes in someone’s game when they aren’t actually there. He has been scrutinized for the past 5 years. He is better than Slaf. What a pick by Seattle. He is built to be a captain.
You're still going off his 15 years old season hype. His 17 yo season projects more as a 2C than a franchise player. The main complain that came back time and time again from the scouts watching him was his lack of compete. After being passed by MTL and NJ, he spoke like he was certain he was going to Arizona. Entitled af and didn't back it up with good performances this year.
Slav might be the overall more dangerous offensive player because of size and reach and good hands but Wright is imo a better overall player but perhaps Slav got the nod because of sheer size alone he SHOULD be rugged enough i am sure Wright is already rugged enough.
For people wondering why he went 4th. The most recent scouting reports say he's a little soft and doesn't have a huge compete level. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, just what the scouting reports say. He's obviously an amazing talent and can work on being tougher in puck battles.
@@Patt187 Interesting. He didn't seem like a selfish type or a bad apple. It's odd but your info does seem right. Many people coming up with that same reason.
@@BoleDaPole Yea that could be true. 94 points isn't a bad season but you must be happy as a seattle fan. Dont think you were expecting to draft Wright.
I think Montreal and New Jersey passed on him because he isn’t want they were looking for, the habs already have Suzuki at centre and they don’t really need another young stud centermen, so they went with the 6’4 left shot left winger instead, and New Jersey is in the same boat with Hughes and hischier down the middle so they got a winger instead. I am a littler confused as to why Arizona went with Cooley instead of wright but it probably is a blessing for wright in the long run as he will most likely perform better in Seattle then Arizona and he’ll be the face of the franchise for a long time. But my hot take is that probably half the league would have drafted wright first overall if they won the draft lotto as he is what they need but unfortunately in this years draft the top 2 teams had no use for him.
Arizona has an agenda of going with mostly American players. That's why they'll never get out of the NHL basement, they rather have an American than a more talented player.
No, that wasn't it. Montreal had a dinner with Wright and no other prospect, not even Slafkovsky. NJ flew both Wright and Slafkovsky to NJ after the combines and not Nemec, because they were looking at grabbing one of the two. Clearly Wright managed to turn off a lot of teams in his interviews. The #1OA spot was his to lose. To me, he sounded more entitled than confident. He had a disappointing year, yet still act cocky af. That's not a good look. I can't even imagine how bad the interviews had to be. He's the kinda guy who was probably like "really guys? Why are you interviewing me, there's no chance I slide to #3" in his interview with the Coyotes. Cocky, but didn't back it up this year and thus leaning dangerously on the entitlement side.
wonder if he fell due to attitude ? Seems like he's a bit cocky.... maybe the teams that passed on him were worried about his abilities to be a positive teammate ?
I legit cant believe Arizona passed on him. With all the issues they had they were handed a superstar to brand their team around and instead went for cooley. Cooley has great upside dont get me wrong, but he aint gonna sell seats or elevate your teams market cap next year (its gonna be 2 years min) (and arizona is the only team in the entirte league that desperately need a name to sell)

Nothing wrong with Wright... Canadiens just liked Slafkovsky... can't blame them.. he's turning into a monster.. 82GP 20G 30A 50 PTS and a big presence out there.. constantly creating takeaways.

@@qwerty_2109 Slafkovsky is a physical specimen. A big guy with hands like that, one that on top of it just showed an elite level of competitiveness in high stake games is rare. That's not KK. KK wasn't worthy of a #3 pick and everyone but Bergevin knew it. Slafkovsky had pushed to the top of a LOT of scouting lists by the end, because unlike Wright, who seemed to stagnate, Slaf was progressing at a furious rate this year. You want a prospect that's progressing, not one that seemed to have already plateaued. Give a few years to Slaf to develop, and he will be a powerhouse in the NHL. Him along the board to give pucks to Caufield and Suzuki? Or gaining zone entry for them? Yes please.
