Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944. He grew up on a farm with his seven sisters. Salgado originally pursued a career in economics graduating with his masters degree from the University of São Paulo. After beginning his doctorate, he moved to London and worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization.
Around the age of 26, he began to develop an interest in photography. It didn’t take long to develop his skill and within several years he decided to pursue a second career as a photo journalist. In 1979 he joined Magnum Photos of which he was a member until starting his own agency in 1994.

No photographer has ever hit me in the gut as he has; I didn't think it was possible for photography to elicit such an emotional and aesthetic upheaval. The feel of his photos is almost plastic, sculptures wrapped in mist and oil. I would love to write him, although I doubt if I would make it through his handlers....Beyond words....

The image of the elephant in the bush with the way the light was cast on it ... one of the most beautiful images I've ever seen. what is strange about it is I'm a grown man and I'm not afraid to say I spontaneously broke into tears when I saw it. Honestly that has never happened before. Stunning work. Thank you for this episode.

At 64 I discovered photography after an introduction workshop I saw advertised. Got myself a level entry camera and learnt the technical stuff: more workshops and too much RU-vid. Upgraded my camera -I love buttons and not menus. Also love spending hours on my own planning trips and being on 'scene' taking pictures. But now realizing there is so much more. Not sure I have enough time to absorb everything out there, this has turned from a hobby into an addiction, a technical geeky pursuit, a need to spend money on 'essentials' (thank God for EBay) and so much more, a continued education. Thanks for the videos. Have a very good New Year.

Great video, Ted. I had a few minutes with Salgado last year, when he was teaching a class in my city (Porto Alegre, Brazil) about his work. He is a wonderful person. I think that, today, his message is to the young photographers. To learn all about the people that you point your lens. Studying anthropology, sociology, history, etc. You should check the Juca Martins photos too. He also is a brazilian photographer, worked with Salgado (on the Serra Pelada too) and doing some photos in the majors events in Brazil, during the 70`s and 80`s. He also covered the MST (Movimento Sem Terra, or Without Land Movement) around the country - one of the Salgado`s pictures that shows a lot of people holding their sickles up. Well, congrats on the channel. I am a historian of brazilian photojournalism here in Brazil.

What a great point, Caio! Thank you for sharing it with us! It feels like in photography you do get close to your subject whether you want to or not. A deeper understanding of all those studies is indeed necessary.

Thanks Ted for educating us the art behind photography from these Master's. Sebastiao is the single most important person in my collection to change the way I looked this world. He often says that his photograph is not to hang in the wall of the museum, rather should entice a debate on human condition. His work cannot be copied since he spends yr after yr to get to know people before even shooting them. With todays generation where someone cannot concentrate for even 2 secs, do you think they will wait a yr to take pictures ?

Ted I'd also suggest a close look at Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, and watch the documentary "Manufactured Landscapes." Some simliar subject material, and stunning imagery along some of the same veins. If you can ever see Burtkynsky prints in person, it's an amazing experience - massive size prints, and his ability to capture scale and numbers is by all means on par with Salgaado.

Hi Ted, maybe it would make for an interesting episode to investigate the techniques used by some of these greats? No image looks that stunning simply out of the camera, there's a hell of a lot of dodging and burning going on during the printing process. It is the combination of an amazing composition and advanced printing technique that makes these images so powerful I think. Deciding what to darken and what to brighten and how much, is an artform in itself that I am struggling with (in Lightroom though, not in the darkroom, but the same principles apply) and as much part of the Art of photography as making sure you have a good negative to start with...

Really really great that you did a show on Salgado! I myself bought Genesis some months ago and I was really blown away by both: The processing of the images with the extreme contrasts and second by this great photojournalistic subject matter. I also share your opinion about his artistic importance in the decisive moment tradition of Bresson. Especially when contemplating Genesis I think, that there is also some influence by Ansel Adams. Maybe it's not that much in the accurycy of the technical reproduction but certainly in the love for nature which is expressed in the majestetic compositions. Another great video!

When you spend time and work in industrial environments like this..... Then these shots come easy! His shots are stunning but he looked... asked questions about processes.... recognized patterns in working processes and created the shot! I would love to work in somewhere as busy as a shipyard! However..... i work in a small industrial unit! AND I know i can create interesting shots (if I was allowed the time to do so) My point is........... Its not that difficult to create interesting shots in a working industrial environment! Composition is another story!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;-)

I am struck by the eeming influence of Selgado on Canadian photographer Edward Burtensky, specifically comparing Selgados gold mines and ship yards to Burtynskys quarry series and ship breaking series -- the themes of human industrial influence are similar, but the approaches differ especially in the presence in the work of human subjects, with Burtynsky creating images mostly devoid of the makers hand so to speak.

I've been weaving my way through all of your old Artist Feature videos and while all of them have been great (kudos on that W. Eugene Smith ep), I just wanted to say thank you for not only mentioning his process and vision, but also his EQUIPMENT which you don't do on any of the other episodes. I know most that you have featured mostly shoot 35mm, but some shoot MF and some LF and I know that the equipment shouldn't matter as the focus is on the work, but I do still find it inspirational to know what the Old Masters used in their day to day kit to create the incredible work that they did.

Hello Ted, I have seen the TED talk of Salgado by chance on youtube today and I ran back to your channel to check whether you made a video about him, there it is! Another great video! I am a hobbyist and have a question about one particular photo of him with the penguins and the male seals (1:34 to 1:42 in your video, he is looking at his own book). There is a magnificent chromium look at the foldings of the seal at the front as well as in its eyes. And also in the following image with the crocodile. I have already started my own research about his technique, but, I would like to hear from your experience what the source of such a look (film? development technique? post processing?) would be. I hope you can answer. Regards Oz
