WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Pregnancy is a tremendous burden and can be a hazard. I applaud anyone who willingly goes through nine months of that and through the trials of childbirth, but I have no respect for wanting to force someone to.

Likewise if you support abortion rights then you should volunteer to pay for all the abortions that poor women who want one but can't afford. That means 100% of the total cost out of pocket coming from you. No outside financial assistance of any kind. If you contend that those who oppose abortion should shoulder the financial burden of raising these children... Then you have to shoulder the financial responsibility if paying for any and all abortions that poor women can't afford.

@@John-uk8eo strong disagree. As a True Republican (the old “No True Scotsman” fallacy) I believe that each of us should take personal responsibility and ownership of our decisions. If a young lady has sex, becomes pregnant and wishes to keep it, that should be her decision. If she decides not to keep it, again that should be her decision. As a society our general obligation is to provide support “within reason” for both decisions. The child shouldn’t starve if she decides to give birth BUT the woman also shouldn’t have to go into crippling debt if she decides to abort. As a society, we all do better if undereducated/undertrained women are not saddled with children they cannot take care. Worse if the woman is not emotionally capable of sustaining a child. I’m fine with my taxes go toward helping woman afford abortions.

so if a homeless person breaks into Sebastian's house on a below freezing day... and Sebastian comes home to find him there, Sebastian must allow the homeless person to stay in his house because removing the homeless person from his home would be an "act of commission" on his part that could lead to the homeless person being harmed or even dying...

@John-uk8eo
@John-uk8eo 2 года назад
So would I be correct in stating that you are assigning personhood to a baby growing in the womb? Because the baby is the result of choices that the mother and father made. So a more appropriate example would be. So if a woman and her one night stand/boyfriend/husband invite a homeless person to stay there for a agreed to period of say (nine months). Would they be able to kick out the homeless person 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months later? Seriously did you just compare pregnancy to breaking and entering?
@RalphJBater
@RalphJBater 2 года назад
@@John-uk8eo ... the personhood question is irrelevant to me, for me the question is totally about bodily autonomy.... the woman does not want the fetus in her body plain and simple... if it is NOT a person, the fetus has no rights and her rights to an abortion prevail... if it IS a person, it still has no right to use someone else's body against their will... The analogy of the homeless person had nothing to do with equating pregnancy to breaking and entering, it was a contrary scenario to the "act of commission" argument put forth by the caller with the "reverse violinist" position that the problem with abortion not being that the woman HAS to use her body to provide for the fets but that the termination of the pregnancy is an ACTIVE participation resulting in the death of the fetus.... in other words, kicking the fetus out of her womb results in its death... just as kicking the homeless person out of your house in freezing temperatures could result in their death....BOTH examples are correlated in one person (the woman/homeowner) kicking another unwanted person (the fetus/the homeless person) out of their shelter (the woman's womb/the homeowner's home) resulting in the death of the unwanted person.... As to your notion that sex is an invitation to be pregnant for nine months (have someone live in your house for nine months) the analogy does not hold because prior to fertilization (which takes place AFTER the sex) there is NOTHING (no zygote, embryo, fetus, PERSON - pick your favorite word) to EXTEND AN INVITATION TO.... pregnancy may be a consequence of sex, but sex is NOT a consent to pregnancy... breaking your leg may be a consequence of skiing, but just because you CHOSE to go skiing does not mean that you just have to suffer a broken leg, you go receive medical care... and if the consequence of sex is unwanted pregnancy you also go receive medical care
@RalphJBater
@RalphJBater 2 года назад
@@John-uk8eo but here is a question for you: would you be prepared right now to agree that we should have an open vote where everyone (of legal age) must state publicly ON RECORD whether they support abortion or not, with the caveat being that if the life of the fetus supercedes the woman's right to bodily autonomy (a woman must use the resources of her body to provide for the life of the developing fetus) than if/when science developes the technology to terminate an unwanted pregnancy while preserving the life of the fetus, the life of the fetus supercedes the PROPERTY RIGHTS of those opposed to abortion and their FINANCIAL resources can be used to provide the technology and medical care needed to bring the fetus to term? In other words, are you Pro-life ONLY so long as the burden for the developing fetus falls on someone else, or are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?

The argument that we are usurping a fetus's rights by abortion should consider that the fetus isn't asking to be born either. Because it doesn't have the capacity to express desires as it doesn't have any of the qualities we would define as human such as consciousness or personal agency even in the most primitive form that we might ascribe to other mammals and many other lower life forms. That can NEVER be agreed on if abortion is forbidden, any more than it could be if abortion were mandated. The only logical settlement is for people ...women ...to have complete freedom of choice. No legislator, no demagogue, no preacher should be allowed to second-guess a personal choice like that when the one is pregnant is the one whose health and life are threatened, whose future for the next eighteen years and nine months will be controlled, and whose financial and emotional circumstances can never be fully comprehended by any other person.

I am pro-choice but I totally disagree with these hosts that the fetus doesn’t have personhood and that the fetus “isn’t alive”. It is absolutely a living being with human DNA, and the arguments of viability and/or personhood have never been very strong arguments at all. It’s also doing a tremendous disservice to these women who would have chosen life if they had known that a fetus at 9 weeks looks exactly like a tiny little human baby. They think for the rest of their lives “if only I had known”, but you stripped them of that knowledge when you misled them to believe that “it’s just a cluster of cells, it’s not even living, it’s not a real person”. In that sense, I think this is one of the most anti-choice things you can do is deceive someone into believing something that isn’t true, stripping them of the ability to make the choice that’s right for them. I disagree with saying the fetus isn’t alive and has no personhood completely. Why not just say 1) Bodily autonomy, 2) Self-defense and preservation of health & well-being, and 3) Abortion bans actually increase abortions, ironically. I think all three of these are more than enough reason to be pro-choice. You don’t need to dehumanize the fetus and mislead women into believing “it’s just a sack of fluids,” or “just a cluster of cells”. That totally gives them the wrong idea and then many of them regret getting the abortion after it’s over because they see the baby and they can feel nothing but remorse.

@@jimmymags6516 Not really, unless you also think unplugging someone from life support is “murder”. Pregnancy is essentially life support for the fetus, except in this case the woman’s body and internal organs are being used as the fetus’ life support. She has every right to unplug herself from that baby if she no longer wants to share her body/organs with them, for any reason. She might have wanted to get pregnant, she might have even been excited for it, but the point is that, right now, she no longer wants this and she has changed her mind. It’s her body that is being used by the fetus-not the other way around. So it is entirely her choice. I think it’s incredibly disingenuous when pro-life people say “we’re not *forcing* the woman to do anything she doesn’t want to do, all we’re doing is preventing her from committing murder.” No, that’s not all you’re doing. She no longer wants to share her body/organs with this other person, and she has a perfectly viable option to unplug herself from them. You as pro-lifers are preventing her from getting an abortion, which does in fact force her to remain pregnant against her will. So you’re not just “stopping her from committing murder,” you’re forcing her to share her body/organs with another person against her will. No person has a “right” to another person’s body and organs. Not even a fetus.

The bodily autonomy argument always struck me as rather sloppy. Most of us are fine with throwing criminals in jail and taking away their bodily autonomy and freedom. Our justification for doing so is that it is for the greater good. And it's a good argument. I have absolutely no problem with throwing someone in jail who unlawfully tries to murder another person. But a pro-lifer can - and does - make the EXACT same argument for throwing a mother or doctor in prison. In their view these people are murderers and therefore the ends justify the means.
@LuisGonzalez-rm5vx
@LuisGonzalez-rm5vx Год назад
The bodily autonomy argument isn't sloppy at all. It's states that no one can use somone else's bodily resources without their consent. A prisoners freedom may be restricted because they broke the law but taking away or restricting somones freedom is not the same thing as taking away their bodily autonomy. Prisoners still have bodily autonomy, they can't be forced to donate blood, organs or other bodily resources without their consent.
@azayzelderegis1655
@azayzelderegis1655 Год назад
So I think the difference here is that the criminal has already violated someone else’s bodily autonomy, which is why they’ve forfeited theirs and they can be thrown in jail seeing as they are a public safety hazard. In the case of abortion, the fetus is currently violating the bodily autonomy of the woman, so she deserves the right to take it back and kill the fetus. Also, the prisoner example is kind of a shaky comparison because the prisoners aren’t being forced to give up their bodies for a living being to use against their will. They’re just being put behind bars. So maybe their bodily autonomy is being limited, but it’s not being violated. If that makes sense. I hope this equips you with a good response to pro-life arguments 👍

We are not cabable of precognition and shouldn't be forced to stick to our choices we made in the past. As for the fetus not choosing to be there, by that logic, it's just as wrong to become pregnant as not become pregnant (or to continue/abort pregnancy) since the fetus didn't choose any of it.
