I have always loved Shinedown and especially Brent Smith - thick, thin, in between - We love you Brent any way you are as long as you are healthy, happy and doing what you love.
Respect to Brent for staying serious. That woman clearly has no idea who they are because remarks like that shows lack of respect and knowledge of a band.
I can only imagine how he must've felt upon hearing that comment, and then going on to perform. The first few lyrics "My eyes are opened wide... by the way, I made it through the day" were appropriate for that moment. KLG should've been made aware that he was in the midst of a transformation to improve his life. As it was, she spoke to him like he was a child ("HI SHINEDOWN"). She knew or should've known better. Brent has the last laugh now!
Melissa W+ An interview with Brent said that Kathy's comment was a contributing factor to him starting to lose the weight. So fuck ppl, love the haters, use the fuel to live life to your full potential. I know from personal experience that living great and being happy is the best revenge
@@michellelafaille1678 He's said a few times that she made him feel like the performance didn't matter anymore. He pushed through it for the fans that were listening.
I am a HUGE Shinedown fan. Brent remained remarkably composed and professional after hearing that incredibly insensitive remark about looking like Meatloaf. I just wanted to give him a huge hug. That comment was so inappropriate . She owes him a huge apology. I hope he got one.
@I'm effin done First I congratulate you for turning your life around. I do challenge your thoughts on this topic. KL clearly insulted him just by his reaction. I don't think you understand insensitive because if you did you would not make reference to people as 'Fat People' It's cruel, demeaning, rude and insensitive. Look the word up!
@@aspjake123 `Us liberals' however you implied that are smart and intuitive enough to realize when someone is clearly embarrassed by a comment. There is something to be said for being respectful.
Harvey Popien I saw them the last week of June in North Carolina. Absolutely loved it. Everyone was staring at me tho. Ig not a lot of 16 yo ppl listen to them
I saw Shinedown last year at the Prudential Ctr in Newark, NJ. Brent's voice was AMAZING! His voice FILLED the entire arena! His voice gave me Goose Bumps! Amazing!
Damn it’s awesome see where Bret is now he looks so good now m, defiantly give me even more inspiration as I continue my weight loss journey I’m down 35 pounds since feb2019 and it’s now June 2019
I wish she knew just how big of an insult it was to call him fat in that tone of voice and expression. Yall know what i mean. Ive been through it, dope took everything and everyone i ever cared about. Ill never be able to get that beautiful life that i thought i hated so much back because of my own choices. But when youre getting clean usually youre skinny, so weight is just one of those things that you can physically look at and see that your mentally exhausting effort, to fight off a craving like none other, is paying off. In that sense, i was 135 at 6' tall now 1 1/2 months later im 172 and counting. So keep on pushin man! This fight will never be over, it just gets easier to fight back.
Wow Kathy really? He carried far more grace than she could hope to. He was more accepting of her and her comment than she was of his appearance enough to have couth.
@@shanebell3122 Well as I said his voice clearly wasnt at his best here. Which is probably why he didnt belt it out. Because he struggled with the higher tones, which is understandable as he toured a lot most likely.
@@Wargsy He definitely did. This was towards the end of the Sound of Madness tour, which if you remember, he nearly blew his voice out during, because it was a two year tour. He left the Madness tour with cists on his vocal cords, a fucked up voice, was on the edge of serious damage. That's why he makes sure he rests his voice on their days off now.
@@victoriahodgdon1529 I dont remember that but hearing his voice it definitely sounded like he had strained his voice a lot. But some ppl dont get that sadly.
Meat loaf? What's ironic is that Meat loaf lost a lot of weight got off the drugs and today he sounds like shit. Brent did both of those things and he still kicks ass. Yes given that Meat is much older but still.
You could tell by the way she said the band name that Kathy didn't really know anything about the band. The other lady obviously was into the band - "it's such a great song!"
As expected, this was another great performance from Shinedown. It was nice to see such a great band recognized on national TV. I still think they should be bigger, but we're in a digital age where most singers layer their vocals through auto-tune/synths, and many younger listeners have become conditioned to not appreciate instrumentation and honest vocal deliveries. . . That comment was horrible; it was disrespectful and out-of-place. . . I wonder if Kathy Lee would say something like that to another woman? (She may have because she's not the sharpest tool in the shed). What he looks like should not have come out of her ignorant mouth. Hoda Kotb on the other hand genuinely liked the performance (even lip singing) and was much more respectful to the group. Props to her, but of course the credit goes to these guys.
Especially considering this was at the end of the 2 year long Madness tour, and Brent had blown out his voice and had cysts on his vocal cords (hence the slightly quieter, mellower version of the song you're hearing here), and Brent was pushing through all of that to close out the tour and the PR and all that.
Meatloaf, really bitch, cause meatloaf is so much bigger and older then Brent,he has lost weight and looks much healthier now..But that was rude! keep up the good work Brent!! LOVE your music🤘
The man can can belt em out, has a great stage persona. They opened the " event" with sound of madness, he had on what i would best decribe as a mad hatter ring master outfit. and they brought down the house. the meat loaf ref. his hair and the way he holds the mic and sings is remeniscant of the big beefy one. He rocks ...meatloaf rocks. Its just music and entertainment.
BOOM LAY, BOOM LAY, BOOM! Whoa hold the phone.. dafaq?! .....I mean Meatloaf is cool af....but he has long since EVER been able to hold a candle to Brent Smith, at any stage in either one of their careers, to have EVER been able to mistake them for one other 🤨¿¡¿¿ Brent Smith is a beast! There is not a doubt in my mind that Shinedown will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame one day 🤘☝️✊✌
I love shinedown I’m a huge fan of shinedown I loved the performance but when she called him meatloaf that was so disrespectful I wanted to hug him after she said that I felt so bad for him I could tell he was upset when she called him that I hope he got a apology
what are you talking about??? that's the best i've heard acoustic of that song, they matched eachother perfectly, wonderful harmony, and the ladies sang along, lol
The weight is explained by the lack of drugs, which I believe he gave up cause he has a kid now. He definitely sounds sick during this performance. If anyone doubt his voice, just check out my videos of Shinedown from the Tulsa State Fair, which was about a month after this. We overheard a roadie saying he was sick that day as well, but you could not tell by his singing..
This was also towards the end of the Madness tour, which was a nearly constant 2 year tour, and if you remember, he came off the tour with a blown out voice, cysts on his vocal cords, just shy of serious damage. His voice was probably exhausted.
that was just plain old insensetive but also had the silver lining of motivating him to make a huge change so its all in your attitude in how you interpret such things afterall.
Brent clearly held back his voice when he heard that comment. The studio version he is clearly letting his voice loose. This version he sings an octave lower...probably because of what she said.
No he would never give a less than great performance on live TV because of a comment. He was sick & his voice was messed up from a 2 year tour. This was towards the end of the tour. He did have cysts on his cords when the tour was over.
I to had a problems with drugs as Brent did...I gained alot of weight...Better to be heavy and happy than skinny and drug sick...Besides I prefer a man with meat on his bones...
Damn what a performance, as far as the meatloaf comment was concerned, Brent smiled and still played a great song, I don't think he was too bothered by it
Ryan Nupp he was upset about it, it’s one of the many reasons he lost weight the weight and kept up the exercise regime. He often brings it up in interviews
He's said in an interview that the comment made him feel like the performance didn't really matter. It was more of a 'yeah that hurt' kind of smile. He was attempting to be professional and keep it in until after the performance. That comment was one of the things that pushed him to start his weight loss journey.
@I'm effin done NO! Not good. People should show respect no matter what it’s about. Not everyone is strong enough to cope with comments like that. And end up taking their own lives. It’s wrong. I’m happy you lost the weight you wanted to, but people should have shown you compassion and helped you by not attacking the way you looked.
I've never liked her for many reasons but saying shit like this is just nasty, mean girl shit that goes with being chronically middle school aged developmentally, bullying, and stunted in growth past that stage. Meatloaf in his prime was an incredible performer and a voice that was unparalleled, which Brent in his own rite is also. But Meatloaf was unfairly judged by many because of his weight, which Brent was too but Brent NEVER reached the problem with obesity that Meatloaf did. I guess what bothers me the most is that either one of these incredible souls were targeted with bullying and hateful BS like this.
I know this comment hit him very hard and he changed his whole life and lost lots of weight. This just shows that some stupid little comments that seem not important can have a hughe impact to a person. Even if that comment wasn't directly an insult, he felt very offendet. We all should really care for what we say. Because even if something is not forbidden or a general insult, it can hurt other people the same way! It's not about the words you say, it's about how the other one feels about these words. Calling someone fat for instance is not forbidden. But it can hit that someone even more than something forbidden, even if it's true. Also that tv woman should be more professional than making jokes about her quests.
so fucking rude. i’m so mad at her. currently obsessed with shinedown and brent smith, and i hope she realizes her huge mistake now that he’s slim, short haired, and incredibly muscular. he’s looking better than ever. kathie owes him an apology
you guys are fools to be hating on her for that comparison...it wasn't a stab at his weight, she wasn't being a bitch...look at his face in this clip, and look at meatloaf's...they look like they could be father and son
Go drink a few hundred bottles of wine, Gifford. Are you fucking serious? I have never seen one picture or video of him that wasn't beautiful. His weight is a non issue. He has always been a killer singer. Is he healthier now...maybe.
I’m still sickened by Kathy’s words and have been a fan of hers anyway. She took the wind out of Brent’s sails. Humiliated is all I can think of. I’ve been a Shinedown fan since Leave a Whisper. That’s totally disrespectful of her. I’m wondering if Hoda gave her a taste of her own medicine after that.
