Right above that beach there’s a park with an epic view. Doris Walker Overlook. There’s also a street nearby with luxury apartments and vacation rentals that is ideal for stealth camping overnight. But don’t tell anyone.

In the mid to late 90s, I took my lunch break in that parking lot about three times a week. At that time, there was an actual large beach there, with an extra row of parking spots closer to the water from where you are parked. There were fire rings and palm trees, and a restroom building. Everybody wanted to live in the stretch of houses to the south of the parking lot along Beach Road. That is all gone now. The houses are being washed into the sea. The railroad tracks that have been there since the late 1890s will be next to go. It hurts my heart to see it all destroyed. If you want to see how it looked before, check out the address on Historic Aerials. On a happier note, if you drive up the road directly behind that parking lot, Palisades Drive, to the end and turn right, you will come upon Pines Park which is a lovely place to sit and watch the ocean. If you haven't yet, you can also park for free at the harbor and walk all around. There are good places to eat (think breakfast at Proud Mary's) and you can find Great Blue Herons nesting in trees near the Orange County Harbor Patrol. Your lunch/dinner looked delicious.
