Are you more interested in the Nightster now that it is cheaper, or do you think $12K is still too expensive?

Harley is a shining example of what a lot of companies are doing these days. They're just focusing on premium, high profit margin products. They don't really care about the affordable products anymore. Entry level products aren't profitable enough for them. New Harleys have always cost a little more than the competition, but the current Harley lineup is just completely out of reach for most people. But they'll sell enough to stay afloat for a while. I still think turning their backs on the affordable bike market will bite Harley in the ass some day.

It will, not bringing anyone to the brand and thus not building any loyalty with newer riders while their current base ages/dies out of riding. They’re also making a mistake not bringing the Indian made small displacement bikes to the US to attract those newer riders. They phoned in the street series bikes and are now too scared to go after the beginner market because those bikes failed (due to being aweful bikes).

A few thoughts to consider: 1) Harley sells 62% of the motorcycles it makes in the US market 2) In the US, motorcycles are more likely to be leasure vehicles and therefore not likely to be purchased on merits of commuter economy or utility. 3) leisure items are generally purchased with surplus income 4) Some people have more surplus income than others, in the US especially. 5) Harley is well equipped and versed on how to drain a very specific customer base of their surplus income. 6) Manufacturing a premium brand in the US is particularly expensive, more now than ever. 7) What makes a brand premium and high value is almost entirely on the part of the buyer 8) There are no universal standards for why a person will or will not burn their disposable income on such a thing as a 40k Harley 9) Inflation sucks 10) Spite needs a Harley

Or.... buy a Challenger, which Harley is trying (not so subtly anymore) to match in looks and performance. I put EVERYTHING shy of going stage 2 and cams into my build and it was under 37k total. It runs like a scalded cat, handles like a bike half it's weight, and is super comfortable with heated grips and seat (cooling too, which works and is insane in a bike) and an adjustable wind screen. My 108 crushes 131s all day long at near stock for performance parts when guys are dumping all kinds of dough into their HD without equitable return on that dollar. But.. it's their dollar I guess. To me, Harley is just an expensive shampoo: wash, rinse, repeat. I honestly wonder how long they continue to ride the legacy (which is obviously valid worldwide) without adding something of consequence.

You touched on some things ive been thinking about harley for a while, namely attainability. My big problem is that everything Harley does, someone else does cheaper with more power and less weight. I keep hearing its supposed to be an aspirational brand. I dont see what im supposed to aspire to when it gets out punched in every area it tries to compete in. A lower priced entry bike is critical, because when im shopping in the $20k range there are SO many options that hit SO much harder

Harley needs to do what Ducati did with the OG Monster & make a parts bin special. Specifically an XR975. And do it properly, not like the old XR1200. It wouldn't be hard either. The Pan America frame & geometry is right there. Strip it back to the bare essentials & throw the 975 engine in there. Throw on the tank from the Sportster S, rework the Sportster S seat section to be longer & finish in a duck tail and make a new sub frame to fit & you're basically done. And Voilà! You have a Srambler/Flat Tracker with real off road ability that cost bugger all to develop.

HD would be the king of bikes for literally everyone if the would just take the CVO top of the top bike and set it at $30k fully optioned out. That's about the value of the bike not $48k. THEN set pricing for everything else below it. What do you get? Bikes that match their value, a nightster at 10.5 - 11k where it should be, baggers around $20k where they should be. We've all seen the leaked cost sheets of what it is to manufacture a RG ST CVO for '24 and when you're talking 50% margin that's the main issue. I still stand with HD on their bikes being good, however the pricing doesn't line up with any of the models actual value. I don't know where you're getting 50% margin, dealers buy these for roughly 36k and as long as they are priced at MSRP only make 7K. If you're like my dealer we start discussion at MSRP and depending on how easily we can sell it to someone else we will take more off. We still have a 2023 CVO on the floor and offered to someone at 40K out the door just to try to get rid of it.... that was 6K+ off MSRP and we were throwing in accessories on top of it. The new fairings on the Street Glide are cool, but just look like those off a 2013 Victory Magnum. Victory was making "performance cruisers" before Harley even thought about it, and for that matter, the Japanese were doing it before them. Polaris definitely made a mistake in dropping Victory in favor of Indian, they were ahead of their time, and would probably own this market now. Instead we got more slow heavy nostalgic baggers from Indian that looked like rolling birthday cakes with all those tassels, flared fenders, pastel colors and chrome curb feelers - *sigh*.

I have said this for two years now since I got my Sportster S. I would trade it in within a second for a SportGlide with the Rev Max 1250. It is a bike out of the gate capable of light touring and still light enough to commute. It is a great introductory platform to the RoadGlide and StreetGlide but still stripped back enough to be fun in a city. For most it would be their first "foot-forward" bike which makes people feel less planted but with the high seat back and comfort when used to it, beats the hell out of mids and rears. The Rev-Max 1250T is just tailor made for that bike.

@@Vee_231 I'm afraid that you might be waiting a long, long time. Like, until they get a CEO who wouldn't be afraid to sell it at cost, or at a slight loss. Because I can't see regular Harley buyers going after them, and I don't think spec wise it will be that much better than anything on the market now. So that rules out other buyers. Honestly the Fat Bob needs a major change. They were cool at first and the people who wanted them bought them, but then they just sat on the dealer floors. I'm surprised to see the Pan America in the lineup again for 2024. Harley has a history of cancelling anything that wasn't a cruiser, bagger, chopper or touring bike. Those didn't sell. I guess the Pan American is the first exception. Also, Harley is creeping into the Cadillac Escalade market. Some people will pay $42K for a motorcycle just because it isn't cheap.

$42k is nuts for a "performance" bagger. Sport touring is always going to be on a sliding scale with various models falling closer to the sport or touring side depending on which. I just think this one falls too far to the "touring" side of the scale to sway folks with that kind of money away from the truly sporty options in the segment. We will see I guess.

I believe HDs major problem is their static customer base: 60+ years old cruiser riders, that only wants air cooled big noisy v-twins that sounds fast and impressive. Every attempt to launch something different, like the v-rod, the smaller more sporty bikes, the awesome Livewire (which actually is really fast) and the awesome Pan America it flops and production terminates after a few years. The strong brand of Harley Davidson is also its weakness, as younger bikers in other countries (in Europe, Asia) does not appreciate the hard Harley Davidson association with the confederate flag, american patriotism, guns and outlaws. So they stick to Japanese and European bikes. The other way around, no other Motorcycle manufacturer is able to challenge the HD grip on the cruiser segment. So it doesent matter if the Pan America were better than a BMW GS or if Honda was able to make a better cruiser than Harley: adventure bike riders will buy the GS or a KTM or a Honda etc, and the cruiser riders will buy the Harley Davidson that feels and looks like it was made just after world war 2. But of course in the colour scheme of 2024. Had any other manufacturer than Harley launched the Pan America, it would have been a huge success. I still regret I did not buy the LiveWire, but I dont regret selling my Harley cruisers/choppers.

I’ve been saying it sense I first started riding a few years ago, HD doesn’t care about their customers, that’s why I sold my sportster and bought a FZ09 instead, they make the motors bigger every year and change 1-2 things about the bike and say it’s better than ever, the CVO ST does look really nice, buy you could buy a R1 and an MT09 and still have money left over, i appreciate the fact HD is trying, but they need to completely rethink things for the next generation, the years of dudes wearing leather with wolf tattoos blaring deff leppard on there 110ci screamin seagull are over, people like the boys from eastcoastin and Krusei Originals make dope dynas and road glides that shred, that’s what HD needs to start doing, we want bikes that can hold their own against the naked bikes and sport bikes in today market not an updated street glide or road glide
