In a secret corner of England lies a remarkable place - the Science Museum vaults. Housing 35,000 items across 10 gigantic hangars, it is the biggest invention time capsule in the world. Now, for the first time, a team of celebrity presenters crack open these vaults to explore the treasures within and find the inventions that have built our world. These big inventions are: the television, presented by Sir Trevor McDonald; penicillin, presented by Angela Rippon; the fridge, fronted by Giles Coren; the steam engine, fronted by Len Goodman; concrete, presented by Nick Knowles; the mobile phone, covered by Angela Scanlon and the jet engine, presented by David Harewood. With additional insight from museum experts, and a look at some priceless objects that relate to these inventions, this programme opens not just the vaults, but a fascinating window into our past.

It is a pity, those jewels and pearls of the past are behind closed doors. It would be a great museum, when opened to the public. Thanks a lot for this fantastic and interesting video full of miracles of engineering and passionate people talking about them.

Question: If you could talk to someone in the 1950's what technology would you talk about? Me: I have a device in my pocket that is a computer with access to almost all of the world's knowledge past and present, but I use it to look at other people's pictures of their pets and get into arguments with them on various topics.

Wow, Britain's really tooting their own horn with this one 😄. IBM of THE UNITED STATES is credited with developing the world's first smartphone. It was called Simon and That was 1994 or 95. And Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain, the GERMAN physicist was the designer of the first OPERATIONAL jet engine. It was especially sneaky when the guy speaking on refrigeration he sneaks in the word Glaswegian(which most people probably don't know the meaning of). William Cullen the SCOTTISH invented the refrigerator. However, he still gives Britain credit for it. Omg now they're taking credit for concrete 🤣. The use of concrete has been recorded as far back as 6500 BC in Syria! I'm surprised the Brits don't take credit for inventing the wheel 🤣

As long as that wood is indeed waste then I'm ok with it but that's alot of trees. That is quite the toss up between electricity and environment... 🤔 Haven't seen anything like it in WI. Anyone else from states have a plant nearby that burns wood?
@76verdee
@76verdee 3 года назад
In 2009 the European Union committed to being 20 percent renewables by 2020. At the same time they added biomass aka woodburning as a renewable since you can replant trees because solar and wind was so expensive. By 2020 60 percent of their renewable energy was coming from burning wood pellets. Something like two thirds of it comes from the SE part of the U.S., they turn it into pellets then ship it over to Europe on ships exempt from emissions. All in the name of slowing down climate. Every year there are millions of tons of wood pellets shipped to Europe.

@@76verdee Yes, I caught a youtube segment with James from Top Gear who went to one of those plants where they burnt wood. They where very careful of how they shot it by the looks of it. That is alot of tree's. Probably more than they are replanting and having grow quick enough taking 20-30 years to grow the size of the pieces. I buy firewood for my family for winter as it cuts down on heating. I understand they are making effort and it is appreciated. However the oil fire is one of many insanely damaging oil spills that are destroying our ocean more so than plastic since you can go to any beach on earth and take a small vile and run it under analysis coming up with a percentage of plastic in it. Obviously collecting it in glass viles. There is still a guy putting forth effort in Alaska for an oil spill that happend however he is being pushed out by the company that created it saying its not working enough while all the while the company isn't doing anything. So i guess my point, concern, and the big question is can we fix it quick enough before even more world changing damage happens....?

No No NO!! It was the Italian, Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci who is the true inventor the telephone. NOT Bell !!!!!!!!! That gets DeBUNKED by good 'ol research as I did when I was doing a research paper in History class when I was a kid! As you said earlier in this piece, it is the first inventor, who often does not always get the recognition from their invention until later. In this case, the Telephone! Thank you!!! It took the act of the US Congress in 2002 to recognize Antonio Meucci as the True inventor of the Telephone, not a Scotsman, Bell, who lived in the US at the time, “inventing” something he had money to patent but did not invent! Antonio was a poor immigrant to the US and could not afford to keep paying the patent fees himself, so Bell helped him in a way that was not conducive to Meucci, by stealing the invention from poor Meucci and declaring it himself!

The jet engine was being experimented with both in Germany as well as England before the war. In fact it was the German design of the jet that became adopted universally as the version to move ahead with. Otherwise, better watching than a sitcom on a wet afternoon.

The web creator?? I doubt it. In all due respect the web was created by Nigerian guy Philip Emeagwali while working in USA.... But anyway like any invention, the true inventor isn't ever recognized bug the guy who took it mainstream regardless of what they did to get it

No no no... the British invented everything good and great. Concentration camps, for instance, were invented by the Germans or the Soviets or the Japanese.

Bitcoin is a very exciting development, it might lead to a world currency. I think over the next decade it will grow to become one of the most important ways to pay for things and transfer assets.

You can’t stop things like Bitcoin, it’s like trying to stop gunpowder. It will be everywhere, and the world will have to readjust.

I believe very strongly that countries like the United States could and should move to a digital currency, so that you would have the ability to trace this kind of corruption. There are important issues of privacy, cyber-security, but it would certainly have big advantages.

I personally own Bitcoin in my hedge fund, I own Bitcoin in my private account. It’s a huge, huge deal. Because what you’re talking about right now is, for the next three to five years, an unbelievably better store of value.

@@helenabecky1586 bought 5Btc in 2017 which quickly rose in the bull run but eventually lost most of it and sold off what was left. That was the last I would ever have to do with bitcoin.
