I've had the opportunity to play Reverse: 1999 during the closed beta testing, and I couldn't get over how amazing some of the character designs were in this beautiful new game releasing later this month. There’s a few more characters from history. Druvis’ last name is Weyerhaeuser, which is a real timber company whose family did not die in a giant fire. Bkornblume is a member of the Stasi of East Germany Sweetheart is literally just Marilyn Monroe, who was nicknamed “America’s Sweetheart” Lilya was born in the USSR

I learned that recently too. Didn't know the World Cup used to called the Rimet Cup, and it was actually stolen then. Historical Mr.Pickles also had a sad end to his life so dog lovers beware.

Regarding Sotheby being the name of an auction house, it was mentioned at the end of Chpt 2 that Sotheby is indeed the heir of auction house owners. This implies Sotheby may not be her first name, but in face her family name. Like how nobles and the rich tend to be reffered to by the collective “family” instead of their individual names

I did my own digging on Click and quickly concluded he was based on Hungarian-American war photographer Robert Capa. Others have also arrived at this conclusion.

I think Sotheby's family actually ARE the owners of a very well-known auction house within R1999's world and lore, I think it gets mentioned somewhere in chapter 2, so that reference was very intentional. Regarding the Knight, his sword is named "Durendal", and in one of his dialogues you unlock with high bond he mentions an old friend that once drove to the moon. Which is all referencing Roland from classical french literature.

Another thing that alludes to A Knight being Roland ist his Line mentioning a Friend who traveled to the Moon. Said Friend being Astolfo who (If I remember correctly) traveled to the Moon to find a cure for Rolands Madness in Orlando Furioso. Roland also was naked during His Rampage which might be the reason why A Knight isn't wearing much.

Funny thing about "A Knight" is that i think the reason he was design that way to reference "Orlando Furioso". In which Roland when on a furios rampage while he naked. (FGO roland is also naked because of this)

3:19 “The Son of Man”, a painting made in 1964, is also a great parallel to Mr. Apple! It depicts a man behind an apple, which covers his face, which when compared to Mr. Apple, is quite similar to his collar body design. There are many interesting symbolisms behind this painting. I’m excited to see how it may affect Mr Apple’s story!

So A Kningt's sword called Durandal which is the same sword name used a protagonist called from Roland from Library of Ruina which is the prequel to Limbus Company?! most character design gacha games only make good-looking characters but not unique. I'm just grateful I can find a unique character design and unique theme vibe from this game. and most stories in gacha games die = good story, I just hope that the game story is not as simple as meeting new people fighting bad guys, the main character gets powers and ends up defeating the boss. btw island u already this deep into the lore wth lmao

I can’t even begin to imagine the hours of research this video took. Didn’t expect it to be this in depth, kudos to island for putting so much effort into his content I actually really like this type of video, never really gave much thought to the backstory of character design. Reverse 1999 has some awesome design and background, I adored A Knights design the moment I see it. The design and art style reminded me of Arknights and how they add so much detail and story to the character’s designs. My sources being that Twitter(aka X) character design war between GoldenGlow and Ayato. I say war but it was more like a fashion show for Arknight

Another neat, minuscle, detail about A Knight's identity as Roland can be found in his Ultimate. If by casting his ultimate (After AD 778) he scores a kill, he will grant the "rousing morale" buff to all allies, and the icon used for the buff is that of a horn, which could be a direct reference to Roland's olifant.

About X, I think he is a mix between Alva Lorenz and the Novel of Jakyll & Hyde- Alva Lorenz and Nicholaz Tesla case, I forgot about it but they did the electric thingy that makes most vehicles works nowadays, its referenced in his character notes and skill attacks. About Jakynn & Hyde however, is a book written by someone interested in psychology about personalities and its a tale about a Split Personality Killer, I had forgotten the date but somewhere 1920. I just had the hunch considering it's in X's character to be a creation and uhh yeah, his duality somehow.

Apples are also commonly associated with teachers, fitting in with the knowledge theme. For the Sotheby bit, I was wondering why everytime I searched sotheby fanart, I'd get auctions :). They showcase different varieties of nationalities tooo in a non-racist and accurate representation unlike some RPG games out there lol. Can't wait for a Filipino Character to be added in game. Since the timeline is going backwards, I think its gonna be a reference to the Philippine Colonial Era or Pre-colonial era.

As soon as i saw the engraving on the sword (ΔURANΔΑΛ) i was greatfull for my time in fire emblem games and Fate grand order. (And also math class so i could read the letters) Thanks to that i knew what the durandal was and got super excited! :D The tale of roland the furious was popular in all central europe, there are even italian/german operas about that. I hope it becomes popular again some day! Most people know at least a part of that cast, thanks to the popular femboy astolpho from the Fate series :D

i know that for "people eating gold" its because the storm was about to occur and it was making normal humans hallucinate real food as disgusting items (like maybe your dead dog) and gold/money as food. the storm can warp people's perception. if you have any other specific scenes ill try to explain them if i can!

There's honestly not a lot to say. She workes for the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit [ministry for the safety of the state]) which surveilled the citizens of East Germany. Her name comes from Blaue Kornblume, the cornflower, scientific name Centaurea Cyanus. The book she's reading is "Berthold Brecht Große kommentierte Berliner und Frankfurter Ausgabe" A collection of all works from Berthold Brecht. It started releasing in 1988, with Brechts 90th birthday and the last of 30 volumes released in 1998 for his 100th birthday. The volumes were released by the Suhrkamp Verlag. Presumebly she is reading one of the first volumes. The intersting part is when you consider that Brecht was a citizen of the GDR, he gave the copyright of his works to the Suhrkamp Verlag, since the founder and Brecht were friends. This obviously led to potential conflicts and the Suhrkamp Verlag was also under surveillance by the Stasi. Her reading this book could be reference specifically to that.

i love the game but i also dont care at all for history, i cheated my way through the subject in school to the point i know little to none but i can still appreciate how they went into detail for all of them. I had already caught on very early just from their accent and aesthetic that each is based on real life inspirations specially reading the in game mini even texts in between stages, i do hope they continue to lean into their abstract story telling tho because chapter 4 was really hard to sit through as someone that does not enjoy corpa/political topics, i got the 'ew am i at work' vibes when they brough up "the minutes of the meeting".

To me atleast, genshin feels better as an open world as the world gets bigger and bigger with time which makes it feel more open then a fully finished game. However, elden Ring still has a big enough world to actually feel infinite which is the only exception I'm aware of.
