I found cotton buds that are tiny. Like a toothpick with a tiny bit of cotton on. Theyre for microblading and also cleaning keyboards etc. Perfect for very small areas like in the eyes. They work amazingly with graphite and pastel
I go to the dollar store and get the eye-shadowapplicators (small pads on end like the pastel tools actually) Cheap and very effective for getting into small areas too.
I have found that color shapers on pastelmat do not work with pastel pencils, but they work when you use extremely soft pastels and there is lots of creamy pigment to move around. I don't find them useful for blending, it's really more for shaping the colors (like their name says), pushing pigment around, reaching small corners, create painterly effects, and so on..
A couple of the ones you showed Jason, are really clay shapers. I've used them with sculpting clay miniatures. However, I've been using a product that body painters use a lot from Loew-Cornell Cone Style Stix. They are not rubber but a spongie like thingy. Comes in many shapes. My smallest cone .. shapes down to the taper to 2mm. You don't need a lot pressure and really blends like your finger. Here in the states at a store called Hobby Lobby has a set of 4 costs $8.99 (7.06 pounds I believe) so they are very inexpensive. You can also wash them off. Just throwing in my two cents..:)
Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art The little paddle shaped eye shadow applicators, sounds like the thing that kittyrins is describing, you can buy them wherever they sell cosmetics. They only cost a couple of dollars for 10.
Another in-depth tutorial. Very informative and very helpful. For blending small areas on Pastelmat I like to use cotton buds. They're no good on sanded paper but work very well on Pastelmat. Thanks for taking the time and sharing 👍
👍 Thanks for testing and sharing tips about all these various tools. I’m working on a project now where this stylus will come in very handy and will try it out today.
Wow, thank you so much.... Such an inspiration! I learned so much from all your video... I do love to start a colorful draw with pastel by looking at your video...it's really help me to discover my artwork.
Thanks for the great tip! I’ve been trying a few different tools lately to see if there is something that blends well in small areas but had not thought to try a stylus. Luckily I have several lying around unused so I tried and yes, the pastel blends pretty well! Thanks again!
Very helpful. I am working on a horses eye that is a bit smaller because I am doing the neck and head. I use pastel mat but am always afraid of filling the tooth too soon. Thank you.
Hi Jason, your work is fabulous! I just wanted to send you a tip, in the ladies make up isle, there are rubber to blenders like a stylist that are really inexpensive. Also, they have cotton buds that are shaped with a point which work really well for tight areas. Thank you for sharing your talent!!
Colour shapers don't work on paper's like Pastelmat. They work very well with graphite and charcoal on smooth paper like Bristol board. Great for softening edges and creating blurred effects.
@@wildlifeartjmHave you tried using pipe insulation foam? You can cut and use a small or large piece depending on the size of the area you want to blend.
It looks almost... like some makeup applicators (??) And they do come in little pointy rubber points (eyeliner smudgers etc) and you can buy them in White and other colours. But this is great - I REALLY like... videos that are about different things to use to blend and yeah - the colour shapers won't make friends with me either! They look sooo good but I mainly use them for removing stuff rather than blending 😄
A box of 200 Q-Tips (400 both sides) work well enough and for £1.25. Makeup Blender Sponge Gyro Shaped also work great and have quite a fine point and are flexible enough to gain the size required £0.75 for one.
Happy New Year!!! Jason, Love the informative tip. Just a thought here. Could you use the tip of the pan pastel triangular painting knife to do same thing? or does it smudge it too much like the colour shaper? Would the colour shaper work better on pastel paper? Collin Bradley uses them on Ingres paper. Love your tutorials.
Thanks for your great tutorials, Jason. I’m going to search your videos on RU-vid to see if I can find a video about using FC Polychromos colored pencils over PanPastels. If you haven’t done one, please do.
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I noticed that the pastel goes on very smoothly on the paper with none of the paper showing through, is this due to the paper you are using, or are you perhaps pushing hard with the pencils?
Fantastic video Mr. Morgan! I will try the stylus sometime in the future. Meanwhile, have you tried using Q-tips (ear swabs) to blend or smoothen pastels? I personally have used Q-tips on different paper types for blending pastel art, they blend well and also take off lesser amount of pastel color from paper when compared with finger blending. Any personal experience with regards to this?
Great video! Has anyone tried the microfiber stylus tips. After viewing this video I am wondering if they would work for blending or even better for use in the Pan Pastels.
I ordered some ballpoint pens from amazon that had a very small stylus on the end. I got it because I have fat fingers on my phone and do not text very well. Maybe it can do double duty For me. Hope that helps.
I’m so glad I discovered you and your video on RU-vid! Absolutely brilliant! I am interested in trying a different medium other than watercolor. As a beginner to pastels, what supplies would you recommend? Excited to get started! I intend to watch all of your videos for instruction! 🎨 😊
What an incredible work! Please ask me a question after I finish the work and I will frame with glass is it necessary to apply a varnish or not? I use Faber Castell Pitt Pastel. He was reluctant to apply the spray, as it darkens the pastel and leaves it slightly pigmented.
Hi Jason, I am just getting into pastel pencil painting. I do stick pastels generally, but have a full set of Carbothellos. I love them. Where can I get the black blending rubber stylus tools you demonstrated? Can you put a link to them? Thanks.
hello your demo is great but why do not you put the colors you use! it would serve many of us! thank you I'm waiting for your answer! your eye is splendid.
Really nice and informative video! I'm wondering if you've tried any of the "sofft tools"/sponges from the PanPastel line with the pastelmat and what was the result?
Thank you for the demo, if you use sanded paper what would be good to blend with. I normally use my finger but have bought a makeup sponge for large areas and a small blender tool they use for pan pastels, I haven’t used them yet though.
Hi Jason! Thank you for the video! I was wondering if brushes would be a good blending tool. Have you used them before? I'm just curious if they would do the job. Thank you!
Hi Jason, Superb art. Can you please help me to know the pastel pencil brand and the specific colors used for making this art. Also I am little confused going through the site for becoming the member. Please provide your email I'd so that I can get my queries cleared. Thanks
I am a bit concerned that you recommend to use your finger to blend. Ever heard of dermal absorbtion over time from toxic elements within some pastels? Not an easily identifiable problem until late age. Cadmium in particular. Just an after thought. The archival soundness of your work may become affected and diminish its quality over time from the sweat within your finger tips.
