$500 in 2 hours (Emergency Welding Repair)

The customer called frantically, there trailer snapped right in half at the boat dock while they tried to load. I told them I could do a temporary rust repair to get them the 15 miles back to there home. Welding repairs like this are common here, due to the corrosion cause by the salt. Its always satisfying when you can use your welding skill to get someone out of a jam. This trailer repair is inevitable when you mix mild steel and salt water.

Anthony, I saw you have a Miller Trailblazer. I'm a certified Miller service center and wanted to give you a tip. Never jump start a Trailblazer new or old. If it has a dead battery make sure the ignition is in off position. Remove battery and replace it. When you start it with the new battery, verify that it is charging at 13 + volts to make sure the voltage regulator works. It could save you a couple thousand in repairs. I see this frequently.
@nerddub

why would jump starting it cause it to fail? is the regulator unprotected?

I watch a lot of welding videos to learn and the thing I like about this one is that it is more typical of what I end up working with... rusty metal in the dark welding in whatever position I HAVE to weld in (though I do confess in my earlier days to actually tipping a trailer on its side to avoid welding vertical and upside down). Rarely am I welding brand new little billets on a pristine welding table in perfect temperature with perfect light and perfect hand support... The only thing I think I would have done different was that last angle piece you welded on top. I think I would have welded it V down (corner up) and welded both edges as I think that would have been even stronger and would have looked better. Others can chime in and agree or disagree...

A lil tip i picked up from a friend that doesnt ever wear saftey glasses is if you get metal in your eye, you can put a little magnet in a rubber glove and gently rub it on your eye. Its kirda a last resort if you cant wash it out, but it might save you a trip to the emergency room and the mass of money that comes with that trip. if you leave it in it will actually rust in your eye, the white of your eye will turn yellowish (he had some pictures of when that happened to him, the bit that caused it fell out like a month later without any permanent damage luckly)

The video reminded me of an old friend of mine, who in the mid 80s started doing roadside repairs on 18 wheelers. Due to drive offs, he had to build this spiked piece of pipe to put between their tires that he would remove once they paid him. He also had to start carrying a shotgun. All because he got ripped a few times. Keep this in mind when doing roadside stuff.

Fine job sir. That tube on the trailer tongue looks pretty thin for that size of a boat. Just my opinion I'm no engineer. I'm not a certified welder but I weld decent and often. When I weld thicker plate to thin wall tube, I aim my rod mostly at the thicker steel and "whip" it into the tube real quick so I don't burn through. I can see there is good penetration, but if anyone who reads this is a pro can you please advise me if this technique is no good?

In all reality my welding experience (I’m in college rn) is less than one year. I will say he is doing an 2f lap joint and a 3f lap joint on the sides. No need to make the thing seem all that fancy. I see you’re running kinda high amps. I just did nearly the same thing reinforcing and securing a tilt trailer into a fixed trailer. All I did was run two 3f passes on the tilt connection with a 1/8 6013 rod at about 100 amp on my old AC Miller shitbox and I didn’t burn through and I got penetration and didn’t have many weld defects besides a little excessive reinforcement on the cap which wasn’t bad I just used a wheel to grind away real quick. But you did a great job and got these guys on the road easy peasy. I’m only saying this for internet welders and fabbers like myself who may not know a whole lot about what’s going on here

My only suggestion would be to do a 100% weld - stitch welding it strengthens it but doesn't keep water out. As it is, water WILL get under the patch and start to rot it out again and not be visible and since it gets submerged it will get soaked under the patch and it is salt water (looks like it anyway). After all, it did already rot out from the water it was in.
