As a tattoo artist I can confirm: People get Medusa more often because she’s a symbol of female empowerment and a critique of the patriarchy. People get the spider web because they think it looks cool. People get pineapples because they like the way they look. I have never heard the swingers thing, but out of the three pictures you shared, the last example on the wrists are “right side up” to the people who got them. People get the phoenix for many different reasons. I think I’ve tattooed it post-divorce more than anything. And the pin and the hearts might have meant childhood trauma to one person who posted about it online, but I guarantee most people get it because they like the way it looks and it resonates with them some way. Not every tattoo has to mean something, not every meaning has to be concurrent. There are seriously only a handful of tattoos that people are on the same page about (like a semi-colon, you could also argue a koi). But people get stuff because they like it. And I’m only making this comment so we can stop making silly assumptions about people.

He had issues with authority and since god's were considered the ultimate authority in the greek/roman world he rewrote mythes and legends to depict the gods as even worse than they normally are depicted. A lot of people remember his version of Athena myths as she's normally known to be calm and collected, but his version she's petty and prone to anger.

To explain: the “alternate” story of Medusa involved her being a normal, beautiful priestess of the goddess Athena who had vowed herself to celibacy. and of course, because Greek gods are disgusting, Poseidon wanted her and Medusa turned him down. So he “took” her. As a result, Athena cursed her to become the snake woman she was that turned people to stone with one look and sent her away to an island. I believe the reason SA victims use Medusa is for the same reason she was seen as a symbol of protection: that curse protected her from ever being taken advantage of again. Some people think Athena cursed her out of jealousy, some believe it was to protect her. Either way, that’s the real story.
reality check: most tattoos don't mean anything universally. Unless it's a tear or a semicolon, people will just assume you like how the tattoo looks or have your own personal meaning behind it.

The meanings behind tattoos are subject to change as time progresses. Hell, they're subject to change from one person to another from one minute to the next. Don't look at someone and think you know anything based on their skin.
Also symbolisms are regional, it varies a lot from community to community, country to country, religion to religion... aside from every person having their own symbolisms based on experiences...
When you say the "original" Medusa story I assume you mean Ovid's version, where Neptune raped her in the temple of Minerva. But you should know that that isn't the actual original story. Ovid's Metamorphoses are a collection of Romanized Greek myths, with deliberate changes made to the stories to make the gods look bad, due to Ovid's own distaste for authority figures. They are not the "original" stories.

Actually coincidence. I struggled with anger issues all my life and recently have learned to cope with them. Two weeks ago I went to the tattoo shop and got a Phoenix tattoo just because I felt like it without even knowing the meaning. This world is crazy
The phoenix is also frequently used by people who survive cancer (specifically chemo) and has seen use by trans people who've "finished" transitioning. Many people who have near death experiences feel great getting these as well. All art has some kind of meaning to it, but it can be interpreted in many ways, especially when you don't "do your research" to figure out what other people might think it symbolizes to be common. The tear and semi-colon are actual symbols with meaning, mostly because they are otherwise things people wouldn't find appealing. (I mean most people don't find these tattoos appealing even with the meaning, as their intention is to mark a permanent reminder into you).
I know men as well as women who have a medusa tattoo who have never been sexually assaulted. I know people who are spiderweb, tattoos, who have never serve a day in prison just because somebody says something mean something doesn’t make it a truth.

Again, tattoos have multiple meanings, and the meanings are individual, with a few highly culturally dependent exceptions. You can't draw any conclusions based on the tattoo someone is wearing. The only way you're going to find out what a person's tattoo means, is by asking the person who wears them. Do a search for the most infamous prison tattoo, the teardrop, and count how many meanings they actually have. The same goes for the Medusa and spider web tattoos. These aren't secret meanings, these are ways to pigeonhole people based on how they've modified their body. Let's not do that.

"I did not know when I got mine" exactly why the medusa tattoo is overused in some cases. Not everyone is aware it represents something, especially something so serious. I am NOT belittling or taking away from anyones trauma by any means, I am a survivor as well, but so many people who aren't survivors have gotten the tattoo. My mother tattooed one on my dad, he's never been abused like that, but she had (we've had a lot of vulnerable convos about stuff like that) and neither of them knew about it. They just thought it looked badass. There are so many people who have dealt with and live with that trauma and are so strong and brave for that, but just keep in mind there are old bikers and dumb young people who have that tattoo and don't even have a clue as to what it means. though I do agree saying its overused is kinda toxic and hateful for no reason. It's a lot more progressive to explain what it represents rather than saying that people need to just not represent who they are and the struggles they've gone through.

Here are the 5 possible meanings of all tattoos: 1. I was tattooed against my will, a token from my traffickers, may they rot in hell 2. I got really drunk one night 3. I'm a huge fan of this or that and got a tattoo of it 4. I just thought it would look cool, no real thought behind it 5. I thought about it for a long time, it has a personal meaning for me and my peers.
Yeah, you forgot gang and/or prison tats. Which could've been included in the first, third or fourth if you didn't add that line about traffickers (why? is really common in your country?) and "no real thought about it". Everything have a thought behind it, even if just to look cooler or intentionally weirder. The ironically symbolises survivors of sexual assault is the beautiful and weak one. And also… why sexual assault?! Medusa was never hurt by a man in the original story. Sure, there were some stories where Poseidon forced himself upon her but not many. Most stories involve her choice to engage the affair, her having his 2 children and becoming his wife by the Greek’s rule of Gods marrying their sexual partners. She was turned into a gorgon for breaking her vow, which was found when she decided to ‘partake’ in Poseidon within the temple to Athena. Athena and Poseidon being enemies resulted in a punishment that would hurt the both of them. Could’ve chosen a much better character to represent the strength of women who overcome the anguish of SA. Ps. Medusa being raped comes from Ovid’s greek tales around 0 BC, he was known for focusing on sex, adultery and all things related. It is a bad source because he literally wrote about everything from the birth of the Universe to the birth of Caeser (he was Roman). The oldest and most ‘correct’ would be from around 800bc from Hesiod’s theogony. I think a much cooler female empowerment icon from Greek mythology would be Nyx, who is often shown as the first being to ever exist, although later depicted as being created by Phanes the ‘god of creation’ and was also said to have been an image of fear for Zeus, who refused to punish Hypnos after he sought protection from Nyx for, on request from Hera, he lulled Zeus to sleep (which enabled the stories of Hercules). So yeah, Nyx is literally the girl boss of Greek mythology given that not even the arrogant godking was willing to offend her. Oh, she also facilitated Zeus’ reign as she literally told him how to take over from Cronus so its kinda like the whole ‘behind every successful man is a stronger woman kinda story’ She also had a pretty wholesome life living with her daughter.

The traditional spiderweb tattoo can symbolize a struggle in the wearer's life that they have had to overcome ^^ Tattoos have many many meanings. Spiderweb tattoos existed long before inmate's started getting them.
Or another good one, an addict struggling with addiction. If I remember correctly from what I've read, if spider is in the web, it means addict is still addicted and haven't kicked off the stuff yet. So yeah, a lot of different meanings and you can't know for sure, so just fuck it and do what you want.

I had a friend who got a Medusa tattoo. She was never SA, she just likes mythology and Medusa was one of her favorites. And has a more consistent look in multiple interpretations of the character.
I always get questions about the butterfly tattoo on my wrist and the ; tattoo and on ny other wrist, and people are usually so sweet when they do find out what it means, it’s adorable. Meanings ; usually represents someone who survived a suicide attempt ( the semi-colon is grammatically used when an author decides to continue on a sentence rather than end it, which suicide survivors use to represent their survival) The butterfly tattoo is commonly used as just a pretty thing to put on your body, but one on your wrist can signify a self-harm survivor (look up “The Butterfly Project” for more detail)
The tattoo means whatever you say it means when someone asks. If someone sees my ink and tries to tell me what it means, they’re gonna talk to the back of my head cause I’m walking.
I wrote my brothers tattoo in ogham which is ancient Irish writing, he can't read it but I can and we joked about it in a pub and my sisters bf literally said "that could mean anything bad and you wouldn't know" I looked at him with a grin and said "aye the perfect 4 letters, c*nt" my brothers face went from laughing to horrified shock. I disagree with saying that just that you get a tattoo says you have childhood trauma. as a veteran, almost all of the men, and quite a few of the women I served with have tattoos commemorating their service ( I do as well) it comes from a place of love of country, not trauma at all. also a fair number of civilians I know have commemorative tattoos for family members they love. my oldest son and his wife both have one with the birth information of their son.
tattoo's are art, art is subjective and is what it means to the artist or the person getting the tattoo. i know people don't really listen in art class but THAT is a very important lesson.
