This was a fun one, Florian. I plan to make some RU-vid shorts out of this puzzle explaining a few of the key concepts covered here. I am excited about next week's video as well. Thank you again.

One of your harder puzzles. I loaded it up in Hudoku & poked away. Got caught on a few 'hidden triples' that I misidentified. I can't remember exactly what r/c broke it open but it unwrapped pretty quickly after that. I think that seeing all the possibles is sometimes a curse vs a help to solving. Now to finish watching your explanation of 2 string kites

I like that you found it challenging, Bruce. Hodoku solving is a different style. It is nice to have all that candidate information available, but I also found it overwhelming at times.

@@SmartHobbies Well, I poked around in the program & there is a way to get rid of all the candidates & do pencil marks! Lots of fun

I managed to solve the puzzle in my second attempt, with only two bifurcations. 2:00 I got every single of yours up to this point. Block 3? I'm interested in what happens there. 4:30 I didn't recognize that position. My concept of two-string kites still had bi-valued cells. I suppose I should think of weak and strong links, or "not-1" "1" "not-1" "1". So the 1 goes away from R2C8, leaving the 23 pair. I'll see if I can finish the puzzle with that. (The next thing I see is a skyscraper in 1s.) Later: once I dealt with the skyscraper, the puzzle collapsed. I had the grid filled in, so it then a matter of placing single digits. 5:20 Now that you described it, I see it also as an empty rectangle. I wish that I had spotted it. 6:50 The Sashimi X-wing: this is getting more and more depressing. Why couldn't I have spotted at least one of those positions. BTW, I wouldn't have eliminated 1s from those two cells, but from R2C8, the same cell as the other positions. In fact, you can't eliminate 1s from them, because 1 is in one of them. 9:00 Once 2s are eliminated from block 3, row 3 has a 16 pair. Combined with the colored cells in row 9, we get a skyscraper in 1s. I don't know if it helps the solve overall, without having already filled the grid. 9:40 Remember what you said about the Sashimi finned X-wing?

Great comments, John. 2 string kite eliminations can sometimes be spotted and solved as empty rectangles or finned X-wings. I may do some more of these to get the viewers more familiar.

Well, I don't know where the 2-String Kite appeared. Colours yielding a hidden pair seemed to do the job (65 = row 6 column 5): 65, 52, 34, 25, 39, 88, 32, 12 (colours on 1s from R2C8 leaves hidden pair in row 2), 36, 93 (hidden pair in box 9, row 9), 21, 37, 78, 16, 33, 62, 73, 94, 96, 92, 17, 18, 26, 85, 54, 44, 14, 15, 74, 56, 86, 75, 81, 82, 71, 43, 22, 23, 77, 63, 87, 58, 57, 47, 61, 41, 51, 45, 55, 49, 89, 28, 29, 98, 99, 68, 69. Thank you, Florian, for giving us something approachable. Now to check out this 2-String Kite.

Nice job with the solve Julian. Finding he kite keeps with the wonderful theming of the puzzle. Hope you enjoyed the video as well.

@@SmartHobbies I did. The Sashimi X-Wing was an added bonus. I'd heard the name, but I didn't know what it was. Although you didn't really explain it, I could see exactly how it worked, Whether I would have found one in the wild is an entirely different matter.

Hello, and thank you for putting out these great Sudoku tutorials. I have been learning a lot from watching these. Hey, I am trying to locate the video you made on W-Wings type D. I watched it a while back and now I want to go back and re-watch. When I do a search of your videos I see quite a few on W-wings but which is the one that you specifically cover the type D?
@SmartHobbies
@SmartHobbies Год назад
Thank you so much. I originally covered it in my W-Wing Tutorial. I solve a puzzle normally so it takes a while to get to the D variants. Go to around 18:00 mark. I have a couple of examples and I walk through it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LvWUeuQS33w.html

What is a good source of similar sudokus, may be a bit harder? Im new and want to explore the classic, like top 250 movies on imdb, or top 100 detective books. Is there smth similar for sudoku? I heard about Sudokult Gospel, gmpuzzles, smth like that.

Great question. The closest I've found is Cracking The Cryptics Greatest Hits book where it has 100 of their favorite puzzles that they have solved on their channel. Sudokult Classic Pack is freely available on CTC Discord and has some really challenging Sudokus. Each one was designed to teach an advanced strategy. Hope that helps, and thank you so much for watching.

I colored the cells that could be a 1, and also figured out R2C8 is definite not 1(without knowing what is 2 string kite), but then I missed the 23 pair😂

Nice job Charlie focusing on the 1s. It can be tough transitioning between single candidate and multi-candidate strategies. Thank you for the feedback and for watching.
