Song: Anchor
Artist: Daniel Doss
Today I want to show you an amazing delay trick that I’ve used on vocals for almost every album I’ve mixed over the last 5 years. The cool part about this is there are 3 steps to get it. It is not a traditional delay trick, that you’re using automation, or anything like that, and you do need the 3-part combo to do what it does.
The song we are working on today is a song that I mixed about a year and a half ago for the artist Daniel Doss called “Anchor of My Soul”. The cool part about this track is its an incredibly emotional, very ambient track and it needed to have a unique vocal effect on it that wasn’t just reverb, and wasn’t delay. I didn’t want to hear the repeats on the vocal. For this song, the main challenge was to create this depth in the vocal that didn’t sound wet, but at the same time felt very in your face, because Daniel’s voice is incredibly strong, but still without feeling overpowering. I wanted to soften it and I wanted to keep it in an ethereal kind of space, but I didn’t want to be too cliché in using presets that are out there that do these ping pong things that I don’t like to hear.
So, in order to get the effect that I wanted, I created this template that I do with sidechaining, a delay, and reverb. What those three things do, when they are all combined, is it create this ambience that lets me get the very punchy vocal that I want out of the vocal take, and then when the vocalist is done, the blooming of the delay comes up into the reverb and sends it in, and it’s this really dense, really over the top kind of reverb that doesn’t sound like it is too much.

What are your favorite tricks for mixing vocals?
@efnerva664
@efnerva664 3 года назад
Parallel compression works wonders. Also de-essing the reverb fx (send effect, de-ess before reverb) That way the esses do not catch unneeded attention in reverb tails.
@J_Costa15

@@efnerva664 YES de-essing before the reverb is my favorite thing to do

Cool trick is to add a vocal Doubler before any Delay with an Abbey road Eq at the end adds xtra depth and character to vocals.😁
@OdinOfficialEmcee

I just discovered the Manny Maroquin triple D from waves. On some vocals, the de-harsher is a godsend tool that just does what it does so perfectly and smooths everything out. When I get vocals I didn't track and can't re-record it can really save a session.

Marc Daniel Nelson is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine thanks to these videos. Thank you. One vocal "trick" I use - use two sends - one to a stereo plate, one to a mono plate with a longer decay. As the stereo plate decays, the reverb seems to tail off into the center.
@HollerAtcherBoi
@HollerAtcherBoi 3 года назад
Interesting! Worth a try. Even the other way around could be cool
@christopherthompson6879
@christopherthompson6879 3 года назад
@@HollerAtcherBoi Yes, you can certainly do it either way. I like the first way, because it keeps the focal feeling centered for me but definitely either way works. May not be quite as noticeable though because the stereo will sort of fill in the areas where the mono was.

Pretty "Rad" indeed! My trick learned this week: copy the vocals to another track, compress the hell out of it and add saturation, blend in with original vocal as needed, til the vocal pops out. Cheers!
@Skykingsound
@Skykingsound 3 года назад
Scheps rear bus on vocals. Nice. Try it on your drums too.
@santibanks
@santibanks 3 года назад
@@Skykingsound yes or the other trick from Andrew which is similar: copy the vocal (or just use a send to a bus), use an EQ to filter out the low and bump the highs, compress that to hell with an opto compressor, optionally add another EQ to get the low end back. It's basically like a multi-band compressor where you are compressing the mid-hi's in order to get that stuff to cut through and make the words better stick out.
@Skykingsound
@Skykingsound 3 года назад
@@santibanks Oh well that's fun! I wonder how that'd sound on acoustic guitar.
@HollerAtcherBoi
@HollerAtcherBoi 3 года назад
Indeed. That’s parallel compression
