As part of our Secret Weapons series on Electronic Beats TV, Sweden’s master of melodic Techno Aril Brikha reveals the synth which was used to create some of his biggest records. Watch as Aril demonstrates his skills with the Ensoniq ESQ-M, the synth that helped shape the classic “Groove La Chord” and much of the “Departure In Time” album on Derrick May’s Transmat label.

You did and interview with him in one of EB Slices years ago, I think it would be nice to hear what's he's up to these days. Or just do a tech talk with him :)

Love my ESQ-1. Although I don't use it often, it's going to be difficult to ever let it go. Protip, the cartridges(presets) are not all bad, but it IS a fun synth to program.

omg. i bought the same synth (correctly advertised to me as a "super synth") somewhere in the late 90s and remember trying to make music on it. somehow i never figured out. should have tried harder! i could have made whole tracks with it.

hi thank you for the link you sent me. Had an Asr 10 and had only problems. But not only I made bad experiences. But after i tested a sq 80 was surprised. I worked only with Waldorf Microwave

I wonder if he programmed it right on the rack with the small screen? Or was there a software editor at that time in the 90s?

Yeah, that's a classic bit of gear. I remember owning an SQ80 for a few years, and used it a lot.

psst... that VFD screen might be cooked, but if you wiggle the ribbon cables connected to it inside sometimes itll cure your problems (they are not fastened/mounted that strongly to begin with and they come loose over time, works for a busted cart reader too) ;)

+HootHinge oh i was wondering what that could be..if the screen was just dying on me. but many years of traveling with it for live-sets caused that. ill have someone try to open it for me as i dont know anything about these things.
@HootHinge

+aril brikha its probably the voltage drivers on the display itself, they like to burn out way before the screen. you could always try replacing the internal battery and doing a hard rest, but that working is a rare occurrence. If you really needed parts, buchty.net might be the last source on earth...
