Footage of Secretariat, 1973 Triple Crown winner, retired from racing and standing at stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris KY. Included in the documentary "Penny and Red" amzn.com/B00GK5N6S2
The Belmont race had to be his best ever, watch The Preakness he won. That burst of speed when he passed the other horses while going into the backstretch. Just flew right by them.
A god among horses. Everything about him was perfectly built for running. An average horse's heart weighs about 8.5 pounds. His weighed 22. The greatest racehorse of all time, and some say the greatest individual athlete of all time. There might never be another like him.
I was 14..and i remember it clear as day..all 3 races..he is, he was , And always will be the.... GREATEST...We all miss u and love You...i hope him Penny, and especially Eddie Sweat..the were a perfect team..and lets not forget Ronnie Davis either..i hope your have fun again..🙏
He was the greatest ever for more than one reason, his musculature and bone structure just two pieces of the puzzle. But I think those two aspects of who and what he was were just as intrinsic to his makeup as was his 22 pound heart. And all that doesn't even touch upon his gentle soul and the look of eagles in his eyes.
I don't know anything about horse racing, but when I see Secretariat run thru the meadows in this video, he brings tears to my eyes and gives me chills....God what a beautiful sight, almost ethereal. Like a big, strong Archangel, flashing red, then flashing gold. A gift from God.
Horseluver4ever 1234 You got that right, what Secretariat did at the Belmont would be equilavant to a man running 3 and a half minute mile, extraordinary !!!!!!!!!!
My wife visited Claiborne in 1980, and had her picture taken with Secretariat. It was blown up poster size, framed, and is one of our prized possessions.
I was 14 when Secretariat won the Triple crown and even at that age I knew he was something special something I'd never see again I'm my life time. I am now 64 and have never forgotten this magnificent majestic creation from God. Only wish I had a chance to see him when he was alive.
Was 16 in 1973 when my neighbor Bob said you wanna see history made today. He took me to Belmont to see Secretariat. He cried that day so did everyone around us. I've loved horse racing since. Seeing Secretariat in 1984 was a bucket list highlight of my life. What a magnificent athlete he was.
I was 12 in 73. I recall my father saying something in passing about a horse race. He said “ man, this horse is something else, you might want to watch this race today”. But, I was just a dumb kid and didn’t understand the significance. One of my many regrets not watching. I had the chance. All these years later I realize he was talking about Secretariat in the Belmont.
I watched on tv and fell in love with that big red horse. I was a rider - Western - but would often pretend to be racing, and imagine I was on that tall, beautiful horse. Although I loved my short little Morgan. What a horse he was!
Secretariat was literally the best racehorse. Not because of his physical fitness, but because he loved running. You can see it. He did it in his spare time and there's pure joy in his stride when you watch the videos of him racing. His trainers and jockeys rarely ever whipped him. He just wanted to run - and he got it. Because really, if Secretariat didn't want to run... I don't think he would, hehehe.
I’d have to look to find the video again, but I swear Eddie Turcotte once said in a talk or an interview that he purposefully held back Secretariat at the beginning of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. I’m not sure why he would do that, but I think he was last, or close to last at the start of each race and then he started to change gears at some point. There’s a point in the Preakness where his acceleration looks like a Tesla Model S and he just starts zooming past the other horses. Eddie said that he decided that, for the Belmont, he wasn’t going to hold him back. He was just going to let him go. He immediately went out to the front and obviously stayed there and we’ve all heard that Eddie never went to the whip. The horse just wanted to run fast. It makes me wonder if Eddie hadn’t held him back at the Derby and the Preakness, if he wouldn’t have won those races by 30 lengths too.
@@Whoopdido777 You've got names mixed up. Secretariat's jockey was *Ron* Turcotte. His groom was Eddie Sweat. Though I can't be certain, I strongly suspect you're also mistaken about Turcotte holding him back in either race. Secretariat had plenty of tactical speed, and there wouldn't be much point in deliberately placing him last, where he could run into traffic problems -- he won races stalking and on the front end, as well as coming from behind. Turcotte usually let him him his own race, I think, at least as a 3-year-old. Secretariat was often slow out of the gate, quite possibly because in his maiden race he was slammed between horses and knocked almost to his knees. Chenery thought it made him (understandably) wary. Turcotte did say Secretariat could have won the Preakness by 16 lengths.
@@marysueeasteregg You’re exactly right about the names. Big mistake on my part. You’re right about his maiden race too. I wish I could find the video but I swear I saw Ron, Penny or both say that they deliberately held him back a little bit in maybe in the Kentucky Derby in order to rest him for the next two races. Or maybe it was the Preakness and that’s why Ron said he could have won by 16 lengths. Ron held him back a bit in order to rest him for the longer Belmont.
@@Whoopdido777 Yes, not extending him in the first 2 races would have made sense, with the others coming up. (Might have been 14 lengths rather than 16...Turcotte definitely said one or the other about the Preakness.)
@@marysueeasteregg I know that Pincay (Sham’s jockey) said that he couldn’t believe how easily Secretariat passed him at the end of the Kentucky Derby. Turcotte never used his whip and Pincay was was whipping the hell out of Sham the whole time and Pincay looked over and was shocked at how easily Secretariat blew by him. He could have won the Kentucky Derby by more too had he been pushed I think.
This horse is so beautiful to look at, it amazes me the muscles that are ripping across his body like he works out in the gym 3 or 4 days a week. I love the white diamond shape mark on his forehead, it gives him such a unique look along with his beautiful color. You were one-of-a-kind Secretariat, R.I.P. My Friend.
Even after years in retirement he looked fitter than many horses that are in racing fitness and in the best shape they'll ever be in. Genetics tell the tale here.
This horse was as freakishly beautiful as he was talented, and apparently he knew it. As Penny Chenery once mused, "God never puts everything into one package." Well, in Big Red's case he did, and then some.
What a great story. Laurin said he was lazy. He lost races; he had people guessing. Turcotte said that anyone could have ridden him to victory. He killed in the Triple Crown. To say that he quit at the top of his game is a massive understatement. Secretariat.
i met penny when big reds grate grate grate grandson american pharoah won the tripple crown at belmont i live not far from belmont sat bout 4 ppl to her right asked her bout the relation to big red n she infact stated that she thought he would do it bc of the blood line
He's going to come back (I just know it) in a Spirit Form with Christ Yeshua riding him (Second Coming), why because Secretariat is a Military name his huge Heart was what powered him, Triple white socks & Triple Crown stands for Father YHWH, Son Christ Yeshua (King David Lineage) & Holy Spirit (Power Of God, Breath of Life Lungs where the Heart is) Special Thorough Bred Lineage Something Royal & Bold Ruler...we caught a glimpse into our Creators INCREDIBLE Love etc...for His Creation. Animals & His Son/H. Spirit to be our Savior from this cursed world. It's about the Spirit so if you want to see Secretariat again In all his Glory you better have The Ruah Ha Qodesh aka Holy Spirit In Christ Yeshua 🙏✝️🙏 Amen Not about religion it's about The Spirit In Christ Yeshua, The Truth, The Whole Truth & Nothing but The Truth so help me God🙏
That horse was retired too early! He loved to run, and Ron Turcotte was the perfect partner for him. I wish they would have run him for at least a couple of more years. What a magnificent specimen he was! Just look at the muscles. He truly was God's perfect horse.
I was 20 years old. Living in the hot oil pot called Los Angeles. Watching this beautiful animal that God has gifted us humans with, running the Belmont so easily made me cry with so much joy that day. So much was going on in the world at that time and LA was a forest fire waiting to burn free. But seeing Secretariat run like he did, made me see the true glory of God.
I was only 5 y/o in 1973, but I can understand what he meant to our country, dealing with the end of Vietnam, Watergate, Civil Rights, etc...I think that might just add a bit of glory to this magnificent champion; he helped us heal and root and be happy.
I just looked at some old Secretariat films and this horse was a real HAM when the cameras were on him Eh ?? He seemed to really like the spotlight !! What a gorgeous looking horse !!
yea! Reminds me of my mare, expect when ever someone is looking at her-or filming- she shows of, and gives me the best ride ever! (I ride dressage-only just started getting into showing)
I've said it before and I'll say it again the horse is the most beautiful showoff I like seeing because their majestic but Secretariat has his own spot in the show off thats beyond majestic there was a sparkly behind those eyes
@@nostromo7928 It appears Secretariat is showing off in this video! I’ve never seen a horse all out run and kick up his heels just for the fun of it. Mostly they just hang around chewing!
What a majestic animal and a true athlete! Rest easy boy. Truly born a star and made for fame. He loved it. I sincerely believe he knew just how cool he was!
Look at him, running around and racing in the sunshine like he was a young foal again. Now he’s in Heaven watching over his 2 champion great great grandsons American Pharaoh and Justify
What a gorgeous creation God made in Secretariat. I love the way Bill Nack talks about him and tells his story. Mr. Nack is so passionate about the Great Secretariat. RIP Big Red, My Love & Respect to Bill Nack.
I don't know why but his beauty and the fact that he existed makes my eyes water every time. When you look up exceptional in the dictionary there should be a picture of Secretariat.
WOW WOW WOW! Great footage, he looked incredibly happy and his coat was amazing. Always a good sign of a healthy animal. He was still moving like.......... “A TREMENDOUS MACHINE”
His legacy still lives on literally. He is in the bloodline of the last 2 Triple Crown winners American Pharaoh and Justify. And he is the grandfather of one of the best sires of all time Storm Cat
@@garotadagavea He sired excellent broodmares which many breeders had anticipated. It angers me when people say he was a dud as a stallion. He couldn’t duplicate himself because he was one of a kind and that’s what made him so special. He sired really good horses and needs to be given more credit for what he produced.
Just a beautiful and majestic animal. We visited him in 1977 and treasure that visit along with the pictures that I still have. I shed a tear the day he had to be put down.
'God aren't I cool!' Secretariat leaping into the air at 1:50 and sticking the landing. Yes you are big guy. No one like you, that's for sure. In our minds, you'll always be breaking last and then sweeping the field with ease. A true champion.
Secretariat God’s magnificent creation! He broke the mold when He created Secretariat He broke the mold, there will never be another like him! Great video, he was born and he loved to run and show off, saying “look at me, ain’t I really something special?” 💗 to watch him, it never gets old!
I get emotional every time I see a vid of this Horse, his acceleration is pure power and he knows it, he is without a doubt the most developed Beautiful creation I've seen, like a Old Soul, allowed to create the wind all others chase.
God's Perfect Creature. Kinda adorable how he always turns his head toward the camera, even if he must angle his head awkwardly, as if to say, "It's me, fans! Check out my blaze!" And of course the second horse he passes as he runs by to that lovely piano music is his best buddy, Spectacular Bid! ❤
Videos of Secretariat always brings tears to my eyes he was hero to so many of us. Secretariat born in Historical beautiful Doswell Virginia 3/30/1970 what a Rock Star
Beauty, grace, poise, stamina and speed = Secretariat! I have seen a lot of horses in my life. I have to say that they were nice, but when I see Secretariat eyes, and the way he always came through from the rear, I am reduced to a puddle. RIP Big Red, you will never be forgotten. You taught us so much!
Look at the way he holds up his tail at 0:34-36, that's the gesture of a horse who KNOWS he is special, still! I wonder how many little colts and fillies he sired, what a magnificent specimen of a horse he was, he had it all -- superior anatomy, strength, stride, huge heart and a champion soul, never to be forgotten! RIP, SECRETARIAT -- March 30, 1970 to October 4, 1989.
He sired more than 650 registered foals. He has a daughter Trusted Company born on February 14, 1989 and a son Maritime Traveler, who was born in 1990 from the last crop. Both are still alive but probably won't be around much longer. They are the last two surviving children of Secretariat after Border Run died at the age of 34 last month.
@@mikemadunic7960 Thanks for that info, Mike. There is only one word for Big Red, that is, MIGHTY! I was watching on TV in 1973 when he won the Triple Crown and I whooped and cried, I was beyond thrilled! First TC since 1948! I was all alone that Saturday, but I had been following the impressive Secretariat since the Derby so had cancelled everything to be by the TV. I had been seriously unreachable on Saturdays when the Triple Crown races were on for about ten years. I didn't like bourbon but always had my one bourbon- lemonade over crushed ice with mint from my garden, when I watched the Derby and I'd pour myself a drink well before the Post Parade and watch the horses make their way to the starting gate and watch my pick run. The year Secretariat won, I had picked him to win so was just ecstatic that day, I'll never forget it as long as I live and I've been to many horse races before and since, but none quite like that one. I watched Big Red win by 31 lengths and absolutely quieted for a few seconds after he won, then came the tears! I was probably as thrilled as if I had been there that day. Secretariat: (March 30, 1970 - October 4, 1989), was age 19,1/2 when he died so he had a lot of years to sire foals. I pull up that race on the computer every race season and watch it and am thrilled all over again. He was a magnificent, three-year-old at the Derby and stayed a memorable example of pure CHAMPION to his last days. RIP, RED! The world didn't see a Triple Crown winner until for 25 years until Secretariat captured the honor in 1973. Then came consecutive Triple Crown victories by Seattle Slew in 1977 and Affirmed in 1978 excited racing fans, but another long 37-year dry spell until American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in 2015. The wait for the next winner was short, as Justify accomplished the feat three years later. I think I saw them all win their Triple Crown but none thrilled me as much as Secretariat. Seattle Slew was a West Coast horse so I had picked him. Affirmed was a Florida horse. I didn't pick Justify, a Kentucky horse, because he had failed a drug test weeks before the 2018 Kentucky Derby and probably should have been disqualified for the Derby but the case was dropped and he ran and won. Later, somehow the Egyptian owner of Pharoah didn't thrill me much because I had picked Dortmund in 2015. Still exciting though. We'll see what happens this year. Six-time Derby winner, Bob Baffert has a few of the top early choices. So does Louisville native Brad Cox, who has never had a Derby starter but hopes to bring the 2-year-old champion, Essential Quality, along with a few others, to his hometown track. I'm not certain whether I condone foreigners racing their horses at our Big Three horse races, Japan has entries for 2023 and so does Saudi and Dubai, and maybe other countries also. I'm watching the gray horse - EQ, Practical Move, Forte and Cave Rock right now, but in 3 days, it's February 2023, so some surprising changes could show up before 5-6-23!
I still get chills watching this magnificent horse. No horses in 47 years, have even close to beat his speed and endurance. When Secretariat died, there was an autopsy that showed that his heart was two and a half larger than it was supposed to be. Trust me on this. My best friends lived at Claiborne when Secretariat retired.
That was a gene mutation from the mare Pocahontas for a fully functioning very large heart(22lbs) not diseased at all. Sham had this too his heart was 18 lbs. the gene is only passed through the mares.
Beautiful horse that loved to run with a big heart, look at him even though he was not in the track racing he was running like he was racing had it in his blood, “Race, Big Heart, beauty”
He was such a magnificent, beautiful and majestic horse. I'll never forget watching his record breaking wins on the Triple Crown in 1973! He was truly an honor to get to watch him run. Even in his retirement, he still loved running!!❤
I grew up on property that bordered Claiborne Farm, and wandered the farm as a youngster during Secretariat's time there. You could just tell he was a one in a million horse. He had that presence about him.
Secretariat, our Nation needed You back then and You delivered! We need a hero like You today in 2020. Something we can all rally around. That was the greatness of Secretariat.
Thank you for posting this wonderful video of Secretariat. He truly was one in a million and we were lucky to have witnessed God's perfection in this magnificent animal. He set track records that still stand today. He captured the hearts of millions and will live on forever in our hearts. He was a beautiful horse as well as a great athlete. We may never see another one like him again.
Ahhh but there was one other as good as him, and SHE was also a tripple crown winner, ( 1975 Fillie Tripple Crown) in my view Secretariat was the 2nd best horse of all times, as he lost 2 races in his career while Ruffian (his niece) lost 0 races out of the 10 races she ran, no other horse ever came close. Her Sire was Reviewer who was brother to Secretariat, Both were Sired by Bold Ruler. Just a shame she broke her leg in her final race, a match race against 1975 Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure, and had she not broke down, she'd of won that race to as she was already ahead by a length and a half at the time her leg snapped.
I agree with you. People talk about races when horses lost 0 races. They don't understand the stamina and the strength and endurance he had. The way he dictated his own races to win and the fact all of his races the records have not been broken as we speak as of yet. Yes he lost a few races the the performance he did, it's jockeys today that says that horses today can't run the way and the time he ran and They see that's it's unheard of today of horses. His performance made him the best athlete of the 20th century. The horses today cannot do what this horse did. Every race re ran during the triple crown, he ran them faster and ran them in record time. Like I said performance and strategy made him as he is today. Definitely my favorite horse. Almost 40 years has past and no horse has done what he did. He had to be excellent they made a movie about him. I love you BIG RED.❤
No, he wasn't one in a million or we would have seen others like him. He was one of a kind. Perfection. Never to be repeated. There will never be another like him. His heart was 22 pounds! The average thoroughbred horses heart was 8.5 pounds. He was in a class all his own . Like Elvis. Never ever another . We were blessed to be alive to see him and know of him. How I wish I'd met him. I'll see you on the other side, gorgeous Red.
@@simtasticgrl271 I don't know anything about horses or racing but I did watch a video about Secretariat and they mentioned that many of the races that he lost were lost due to physical issues. I know he was hit very hard coming out of the gate in his first race and many conjectured that that was why he held back at the starts, preferring to let the crowd even out and then make his move. I know he had other physical issues such as a sore in his mouth. I just love watching him run. I wish that I had paid more attention when he was alive and had the opportunity to see him. I can't say he has changed my interest in horses or racing but this one horse was special. I am sure that Ruffian was a fine horse also and we are each entitled to our opinion about who was the best.
SECRETARIAT IS TRULY THE 8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD ,43 YEARS LATER ALL HIS TRIPLE CROWN TIMES STILL STAND, HE IS THE GREATEST EVER PAST PRESENT OR FUTURE.
sorry pal, not even close. Secretariat was faster in every distance either ever ran. Computer recreations shows Secretariat beating Man O War everyday all day. No comparison. MOW 1.5 mile time / 2:28 4/5 / SEC 2:24, MOW 1.25 mile 2:01 4/5's / SEC 1:59 / MOW 1 mile 1/16 time 1:44 4/5's / SEC 1:42. Chavez numbers don't lie. He was way faster. No horse ran as fast as Big Red did, period.
I simply was referring to period of time on YTube starting about 2006 which was painful to read the things people would say. I'm sure both Secretariat and Man O' War are off somewhere in thoroughbred eternity just rolling their eyes at the silly humans who go on with this human back and forth battle. But I will say I don't think John was making his arguments only about computers. Secretariat was a phenomenon whether you like it or not, M, and I have to say when you look at old movie tape of Man O' War standing there with muscles rippling, he is breathtaking to watch. They both were 16. something hands high. I thought MOW was taller but not so. Maybe it's different conformation in that MOW's neck was narrower and longer and maybe a little longer back. Secretariat was "short coupled" a shorter back. S had a gentler temperament, whereas MOW was more difficult to handle. But he had a black groom, Will Harbut, who was very gentle himself and was with MOW constantly. What is painful is that Harbut died and then 2 weeks later MOW had a heart attack and died. He must have been, to me, stressed and maybe traumatized. Where was the gentle soft spoken comforting companion he had for 30 years.
@@alpinoalpini3849 more of a figure of speech - if there is a God then a horse like Secretariat should make us believers.I don't think that religious people had anything to do with his demise. It was a decision based on vets (science) and owners. i wish that he could have lived out his years too.
I love just watching him love to run! He is perfectly built....running like a tremendous machine. He loved the spotlight and yet seemed to love being retired. There is a favorite part in the move Secretariat.. if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. He’s coming around the corner in the Belmont… All of a sudden everything stops and you hear the words as you watch him round the corner..in his greatness showing the world what he will do...”he laughs at fear and is afraid of nothing, he does not shy away from the sword and he can’t stand still with the trumpets sound” So spot on!. The greatest horse to ever live!!💕
Beauty, talent, grace, spirit, and heart of a lion! Secretariat was such a perfect specimen of race horse. Truly one of a kind. Loved this video. Thank you for reviving a splendid memory.
Man. I was never that interested in horse racing in the past, but watching those triple crown races, knowing what he did, then watching him galloping in the field with Chic calling in the background! Shit, you got me tearing up. Lucky I’m alone.
I just love how they used the voice of Chic Anderson. He's moving like a tremendous machine. He is going to be the triple Crown winner. That is a record that may stand forever. He ran the Belmont 1.5 miles in 2:24. Just awesome. Beautiful BIG RED. Just gorgeous with the voice promos just showing him being a horse without the jockey, saddle and blinkers. I really miss him.❤🌈🐎
