By accident, I've stumbled upon this video. And suddenly, it came to my mind: "Laura's Theme" was used as the basis for "Go" by Moby. This song caught me immediately when I heard it for the first time back in the days. This was such an emotional techno track that it made you want to cry. And it was massive. When it came out, I didn't think of Twin Peaks. In fact, I've never seen the series. Yes, shame on me. "Go" made me change my musical journey. As a trained drummer I switched to keyboards and computer in 1992. This was the time of Commodore Amiga. When it broke, I was unemployed, so I could not replace it. Then other things were more important. And so, I went back to making music during the Pandemic. In May last year, I've switched to Ableton. And there, I use a 3rd party synthesizer called Diva. One of the stock patches there is Dream Synth -> Beauty Pad. And THIS IS the "Soundtrack". Well, I have something to play with. And what you said about buying 12 inches, is absolutely correct. One of the most important records in my entire life is "Disintegration" by The Cure. I have it as 180 g Double LP. You won't get a sound any close to this recording when you stream the same album. This is such a dense sound. Back in the days when the German Wall came down, this album was one of the first I bought with D-Mark, not with the money of the GDR. I was in tears when the cassette I bought broke. And I am so lucky that I bought this special edition of the album. Music nowadays is only something like lift music. As I said earlier, I make myself music. It is EDM music. And I want to add benefits to every track, so it is more like lift music from Spotify. But I know that this is not the main reason why music is consumed. This was very different back in the days when Twin Peaks came out. So, in the end, I want to thank you for this amazing video.

Yes, call it nostalgia but the time before even CDs - somehow there was a real connection to the music and the people who made the music. It was an event going down to the music store to choose an album to buy; browsing from a-z, sometimes for up to hours! Reading all the info - and if it was a double album (or a double sleeved single album), what a bonus! Getting up to turn the album over. The whole process felt ceremonial. I'm not going to say "back in my day" - but I do miss it.

Historical Nostalgia is a really fascinating concept isn't it? I also reckon Melancholia to be perhaps the most sophisticated and interesting emotion a human can experience. I'm constantly trying to evoke it within my music making. Really enjoyable and informative video, thanks.

And THIS should silence all the 'presets are bad' snobs once and for all. Our Italian pride Badalamenti wrote those magical pieces which still stand today, gifting us with strong emotions, and he did it with synthesizers, silencing again some other snobs thinking only 'real' (whatever that means) instruments can be truly emotional. It's not what you use, it's HOW you use it.

Exactly! It’s about ‘playing’ a sound. When a sound responds dynamically to a good player, you can do amazing things. It’s like people who scoff at the DX7, they don’t understand how dynamic the patches are. It’s about the player and what they do with the sound :)

@@DistortThePreamp Thanks!!! Don't get me wrong - I LOOOVE sound design and acoustic instruments, they are both awesome in every way, yet, if patch no. 123 is the sound you need, why waste time reinventing the wheel? And sound waves are sound waves, a Strat through an amp is artificial as well, compared to an unmic'd classical guita but they both can make you laugh, cry or jump up and dance or whatever.

As a 27 year old, I'm one of the few people of my generation that bought CDs, classmates always looked at me weird when I said I bought CDs (started when I was roughly 13-14). I stopped buying CDs roughly around 2014 when I made a spotify account. There is a 10 year gap in my music collection. Half a year ago I started collecting CDs again and I'm trying to retroactively buy CDs I would've bought if it weren't for spotify. I also have a modest vinyl collection (most of the vinyl I have were given to me by people getting rid of their records). And I did also notice that the bigger 12 inches of artwork really let's you "immerse" into the artwork, if you will. But I like the CD format better because of the absence of clicks and pops and no fidelity issues when you get closer to the center of the record etc. I think both CDs and vinyls do indeed do a good job of forcing people to listen to the full album instead of just one song. Often on albums I find that the non hits are a lot of the times (in my eyes) better than the hit on the album
@haukionkannel
@haukionkannel 2 месяца назад
Best albums are better than the individual songs in the album. It can be a ”story” or joyrney that is forsed by the individual songs. It is like reading a book, instead of reading one chapter of that book.
@DistortThePreamp
@DistortThePreamp 2 месяца назад
You’re right. CDs really changed the way albums were sequenced. With vinyl, it wasn’t just that there were two sides - the closer you got to the middle the lower the quality (which is not as widely appreciated as it should be). So the standard practice was to put slower songs at the ends of the sides, and the most important songs at the beginning. Then when CDs came along for a while nobody knew how to sequence the pace. Should it still be in two halves? Or one continuous long musical narrative? And of course CD albums could be longer which was both good and bad because, honestly, 17 songs is too many for me to absorb. Really appreciate your interesting comment.

On something like Ghost in the Machine they start a side with a single to grab your attention “spirits in the material world”, finish on something epic “Darkness”, but also put a quality song in the middle “Invisible sun” so you don’t lose interest.
@rebeccaschade3987

I have both vinyls and CDs. To me, the most important thing about them, isn't the looking at the artwork, but the "ritual" of having to get out a physical medium, put it on the turntable or into the CD-player, and turn it on. You've commited to listen to THAT album. If you're suddenly unsure if it's what you wanted to listen to after all, there's a certain minimum of work required to swap music, so you end up actually listening to the whole thing anyway, and usually, it turns out it was the right thing after all. And inside the cover, there's usually information about who plays what on which track, or where it was recorded and who did the mixing and mastering etc. All this gives you a more intimate insight and deeper connection to the music.
@DistortThePreamp
@DistortThePreamp 2 месяца назад
That ritual means a lot to me too. It's very nice to, as you say, select something physical and put it on...

Going by the goosepimples, yes you can get close to that emotional hit of Laura's Theme. I only watched Twin Peaks later in life (after I watched Mulholland Drive which still rates as perhaps my all time favorite movie) as I was only 7 in 1990, a bit too young to be watching Twin Peaks. I remember the theme though as my mum would watch it, and I could hear it through the closed lounge door, drifting up the stairs into my box room. I had no idea what it was, but it always got me, and after finding it through Mulholland Drive, it too became a very important piece of music in my life. Thank you for your RU-vid channel, it's just an absolute pleasure to watch. I can't play music for toffee but music is a huge part of my life and your videos and stories connect with me in ways few do. It didn’t matter if I had looked over it a dozen times I would still examine the artwork or credits/anecdotes or lyrics, etc. while losing myself in the music. I was also impressed on the section about nostalgia especially nostalgia for a period we didn’t even experience. What’s more, when he made the observation that there are younger people who are nostalgic over a time period that was a main chunk of my life. My mind was slightly blown by this. The content is full of personal anecdotes, music history, musical education and musical experience all delivered as if if were just you and I sitting in your studio. I totally agree about the vinyl experience, you would read the sleeve notes and look at the artwork on the bus home, so were already immersed before even playing the music. The album was consumed in its entirety as the artist intended, and it really meant something. I miss that experience.

For me at least, the reason I get nostalgic when going through a record collection, is the fact that those albums existed during the time frame when the music itself came out. It is as if you are holding a piece of "it" in your hand. Knowing that when a song you liked came out in 1979, 1980, '82 or whenever, the record you are holding in your hand existed somewhere out there in the world has a certain meaning. Somehow it feels as though it narrows the gap between now and the past and puts you a little closer to a time long gone. Twenty years ago, I purchased a Roland synth that was owned by an artist who I very much admired. To this day, that thing can't make a bad sound and inspires a sense of creativity like nothing else I own. It's probably psychological, but interesting none the less, and at least to me, very real.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It's always held a special place for me for exactly the reasons you've discussed. A beautiful performance by you too. Also, adding to what you said about Vinyl, so many times when I was younger, I would buy an Album based purely on the release of 1 single or just because I loved the artwork. Sometimes, I found the album not entirely to my taste, but, because I'd bought it, I'd persevere with it, try to hear what the artist could hear. Not all of them, but most of those albums are now the most treasured items I own. Like you said, I would just skip it now and never hear it again.

On the 12" records stuff, I miss it too. I miss the 80's radio. The singles had some cool stuff going on too. Elton John's Passengers stands out in my mind by a mile. I miss walking into woolworths and thinking man even phil collins has a cool record sleeve these days :D. I remember pinning the sleeves to my wall as a kid growing up, lets not even go down the path of gatefold's. Although there's a special place in my heart for Maiden's Seventh Son. Bugger, I've gone down that road so now you should too. I'd so appreciate a video of you picking a top 20 in chronological order and speaking to the back stories of how you found the band and what it means to you. To your point, with that passion, you kinda need to. No better way to show those that have never bought anything what it means and meant. Just to add, back then we had nothing else. Maybe a photo or interview in nme or melody maker or the 2am rock show (recorded) or the one week a month when the chart show could be arsed to show a fringe chart. The mystique was real, the hunger to find out got fed a morsel. I stared into those photos and art for hours, not because I wanted to be like them but to enhance my time spent with the art, music and picture. It felt necessary. I'm glad I did and so are you. Thanks for this amazing comment. I love your comment about “…even Phil Collins has a cool record sleeve these days…” So true. I finally got all my records from storage a few days ago. There was some water damage but surprisingly I don’t care nearly as much as I thought I would. What I mean is that it feels okay to have a damaged sleeve that was the physical copy I bought at the time - it’s almost a battle scar. I wouldn’t dream of replacing it with a pristine sleeve because, well, that’s not the point. The other thing that surprised me was that there are a few records that were never mine and somehow wound up in my collection and I *really* want to get rid of them. Some of the records are really good, but they’re not mine. So I’m in the hilarious situation of keeping records that I bought but which were awful, while getting rid of really good records that I never bought. It must be because I want it to be authentic, warts and all.

Roland had a guy called Eric Persing with the job title Chief Sound Designer who was in charge of creating all these sounds. So many of the presets were fantastic and still stand up today. I can’t imagine a modern synth company or soft synth plugin manufacturer investing such huge resources in preset creation which is probably why they’re all so shockingly terrible! But this might be another reason why music from that period was so good - the synthesisers were not just machines, they were instruments that came with fantastic sounds.

"It sounded like an orchestra, but it wasn't an orchestra." Holy cow... if you had ANY idea how profound that statement (and this video) means to my life! After a life of guitar playing, I switched to keyboards, after the passing of my brother. I wanted to connect with my late brother (and father) through music. One statement I've said to many of my friends is... I decided to switch to keyboards because I wanted to add the power of an orchestra to my music (and band). I always felt synthesizers could do that. They can give you the sound of an orchestra. One of the synthesizers I got a hold of was a JX8-P... because when I was a child, my dad used to play Pink Floyd Momentary Laps of Reason... which used a JX10, and I was aware the JX8-P was essentially the same as the JX10. I discovered the Soundtrack pad, and it became my favourite sound (which I was also aware was used in Twin Peaks) At my dads funeral, my mum chose to play Jethro Tull Broadsword, which has a Jupiter 8. And at my brothers funeral I chose Gary Newman, Down in The Park. Synthesizers are absolutely the instrument of my heart. And this video captured it! Something I have always felt, but was unaware others felt. What a video!

When my sister passed away unexpectedly in 2008, I just happened to have a JX-8P I bought to fix up and resell. I made a track in her memory and used the JX-8P for a pad sound on it. It’s probably my most emotionally stirring track.

Have you ever heard the "Soundtrack" patch on the Roland D50? At the risk of offending analogue purists, I (sometimes) prefer the D50 version.

@@MisAnnThorpe D50 Soundtrack is a great patch, but it’s a completely different sound than the JX8P patch of the same name.

@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 It's a lot more complex and employs a 5th but I don't hear it as entirely different.

I bought my MKS70 for this preset... Totally worth it. :D Badalamenti and Lynch changed my life (I was 13 when Twin Peaks aired). Thanks to (mostly) Twin Peaks, I'm in the music business today.
