That's a really cool trick, I can tell you that it's not something we thought of or tested for when we developed the DM12 but reassuring that the time I spent on the filter calibration routines was worthwhile :)
Super impressive. One of the increasingly rare moments on the internet when someone comes up with something new and not merely SEO-driven. Thank you, you've just got a new subscriber.
@@fortheloveofnoise SEO means Search Engine Optimization - the process of designing pages and content so that it's automatically ranked high by search engines.
@@fortheloveofnoise Search engine optimization. It is optimising content for appearing in search engines. There are tons of sites and programs for that , they tell you which words use, how many times, popular queries, and so on, and a lot of creators simply produce following SEO to get visibility, not by originality. So, we have so many similar content in videos and sites because everybody is trying to do the same. When we get good and original content is refreshing.
I knew what this was about just from reading the title because this is objectively the best thing to do with any polysynthesizer or any synthesizer really
I think musicians should start taking this synth more seriously as a part of their groups set up, just like they do with their Moogs, Korgs, Rolands and Yamaha's. I've had mine a year, and I've barely scratched it's surface of what it's capable of producing!.
Subbed mate! We need more people like you to show us how to create new sounds. I got mine last June. (I know its off topic but..) I played a preset, something like a clap I messed about with it for over an hour then. The result was the sound of a realistic helicopter engine starting up to full throttle. I'd forgot my living room windows were open; then I heard a loud knock on the door (the volume was on full). It was my neighbour asking me if I'd got a very h large RC helicopter engine running in my flat. I told Jim what it was. He laughed and said he thought it was a real one at first but couldn't see it. Then he spotted my open windows....😂😂😂😂
Great vid and content! I also use the LFO, and drive it (almost) to audio rate. Then I key track it, and use it to modulate frequency and filter cutoff... You geat very gritty results. DeepMind unfortunatelly is very underrated by some folks. Yet IMHO what Behringer did, with the simple voice design integrated with a plethora of FX and mod options was genious.
Yep I use a similar trick on the Bellz patch if you zoom in on the mod matrix. The LFO at audio rate is modulates the VCF cutoff for a brief instant at the beginning of each note to create the illusion of a noisy metallic attack

Back in the 80s a number of different synthesizers gave you the ability to drive the filters into oscillation but at some point manufacturers put limits on how far you could drive the filters and therefore they would stop before they went into oscillation. I'd sure like to know why they decided to do that because they took away some really cool capabilities of their synthesizers
Back in the 80’s? I think manufacturers were still trying to market synths to the Home Organist market or other people who may look at having too many options as a defect.
@@frankstetka7206 and in the 80s we had an explosion of disco and new wave synth bands that topped the charts and always looking for new sounds. Some manufactures may have been out of touch with their end users
GREAT! I own a deepmind12 and tried to play with the filter but always got messy pitch sounds, i didn't know about the calibration! Thnank you, this vid was REALLY inspiring! DM12 is a BEAST!
I’ve been doing this on my minifreak by setting the keyboard to modulate cutoff by 50 and setting the cutoff to 56 and then it plays in key with that analog sound
Dude, awesome. Can i ask if you can do an update to this video if you happen to have multiple Units that you can utilize the poly-chain function for? If not, I can. I have two DeepMind 6's and a 12D... I will happily pay you for your work here and post a video trying it if you like. What's your prediction of that method and these new sysnthesis approaches for these units? Lastly, can you edit this parameters easier in the iPad app integration
Hm, interesting. I’ve only messed around with these kinds of sounds on 4-6 operator FM synths with the carriers all in parallel. But that slight waviness of the VCF is nice. And thinking about it, my big analogue(-y) has 2 oscillators capable of sines, a great resonant VCF, and an HF-LFO mode also capable of sines. So that’s 4 harmonics in parallel right there on my other hardware synth. Heck, maybe I could combine them and play in sync over MIDI for a whacking great big 10-harmonic organ.

Well now … more pay back from the DM12! Yes, I own one … it was my first keyboard synth purchased in 2017 on a whim (well really, more like an uncontrolled, very impulsive, gotta have purchase). That said, I have enjoyed it very much (after cleaning out all of the dup patches from the banks). It was ugly for awhile because I really never was able to get it to connect to my Mac as advertised in the manual and it was a big headache, the still exists and I just live with it. It just makes admin on patches and banks very difficult. That’s really my only Behringer dislike … odd patch librarian contortions. This though, is really cool. Yes I have used VCFs to create oscillations before; but, that was on my Eurorack (another rabbit-hole I fell into.). I have to say that I am eager to try this out. It is like doubling the bang for the original cash outlay and who won’t leap for that. This is a great RU-vid contribution, Jakub from the Indy stomping ground! THANK YOU‼️
I agree about the patches administration. They overcomplicated it, specially because they included a software to "help with that" but it's still not enough. Other synths do that much better, in a much simpler and non-destructive way (with the DeepMind's software you can mess up not only patches but full banks, and it's not very intuitive). It would also be very good if you could store your own patches in the computer and had one (ONE) memory space in DeepMind to load the patch you want from the computer into the keyboard without permanently replacing a patch. In other words, you cannot preview whatever you have in the computer. Also the way to navigate through patches in DeepMind is poor (and they tried to "make it easier" adding many ways of doing it but they ended up overcomplicating it). But well, leaving these out, it's a wonderful machine, with a beautiful sound! Offers plenty at a good price, it's solid: metal & wood and one cannot really ask for more! Again, a fantastic machine :)
“Forbidden” from my perspective is humor but it is also great click bait, be it intended or not. This is a nice trick and I did not know it was available prior so here we are. Sweet.
Is there a way to spread the sound using Unison 2 and paning one layer to the left and other to the right? I now it is possible to do pan spread with individual notes but I'm willing to now if there's a trick to this other thing
@@agustinperez8217 yes if you check out my Radiohead video I explain how to do this in depth. The gist is mapping Uni Voice -> VCA Pan while you’re in Unison 2 mode.
I calibrated mine and now all I get using this technique is like a rising sound like old skool lasers. I have copied his settings and not working at moment.any help? 5:05

I love your enthusiasm! Knowing this adds value to the product and this is the instrument which I thought Behringer should have created and they did and of course went crazy on everything else to take advantage of the retro, vintage blah blah marketing with their economy of scale production model. Quality control is still on everyone’s “Mind” haha but if you luck out with a Behringer product, you really do.
@@jakubdomine I’m going to try exploring this idea tonight. It sounds really good on the DM12. Awesome and innovative patching! Thanks for sharing the idea.
Definitely gonna save this video. Stock presets are a little too much for my taste. I like stuff more playable melodically. If im looking for something more unique and ambient like ill turn on the 12d but perfer my peak more to shape sounds.
So glad to see the DeepMind getting some "Luv". My DM12 get as much use as my OB6. It's a Gem of a synth that is hands down one of the best values on the market. Great review of this "Forbidden" tech! Good luck with your channel!! Subscribed ;)
❤will try on mine D12D. The mode matrix is partly why I brought this instrument. Thanks a lot. Amazing creative sounds. These are just in the middle of my sound's scapes. Natural fields.
